Tornado damage in Dayton and how you can help

Several tornadoes touched down in Dayton and the surrounding area on the evening of May 27, 2019. The main damage is in western Montgomery County near Brookville, moving east through Trotwood, across I-75 and into Riverside. As of Tuesday morning, approximately 70,000 homes and businesses in the Dayton area were without power. Both water plants and pump stations in Montgomery County are also without power, and Montgomery County residents are under a boil advisory and advised to conserve water.

Damage assessment is ongoing, and other information continues to be released. The Montgomery County  Facebook page is a good source of information. John Pyron, Director of  Lutheran Social Services Disaster Service  (our partner in disaster relief) offers a few key things to remember (and to share with those in affected areas):

  • If you have homeowner’s insurance and have storm damage, call your agent and report the damage immediately (and file a claim if necessary).
  • If power lines are down, do not go near them and immediately report to your electric provider (DP&L for those in the Dayton area: https://www.dpandl.com/customer-service/outage-center/report-an-outage/)
  • Take photos of all home/property damage prior to cleaning up.
  • Report damage to your county emergency management agency (EMA), if applicable.
  • Check on your neighbors and report any injuries/emergencies immediately – call 911 for life-threatening emergencies.
  • If you want to help, DO NOT send physical goods at this time. Cash will be the most helpful resource.

We are collecting information from our Dayton-area clergy about the needs of the parishioners of their congregations who were affected by the tornado. If you would like to make a monetary donation to help with relief efforts, you can make your donation  here  and the diocese will facilitate distribution funds to the people and places that are most in need. If you prefer to send a check, mail your check (payable to Diocese of Southern Ohio) to 412 Sycamore Street, Cincinnati, OH 45202. Please indicate tornado relief in the memo line.
