Karen Carpenter Palumbo, President and CEO of Vanderheyden, the co-chair of the 2019 Capital Region Heart Walk and Run, on June 2 at the University at Albany, tells why this event is so important to not only her but the community.
Carpenter Palumbo first got involved with the American Heart Association when she joined its BetterU program in 2015. The BetterU is a 12-week heart-health improvement program that is part of the Go Red for Women movement. She joined the BetterU when she turned 52.
"My grandmother had a heart attack when she was 52, and so did my mother," Carpenter Palumbo said. "I realized it was time for me to change the story. The BetterU reminded me of healthy eating strategies and the importance of exercise. It also connected me to a powerful group of women, and reminded me that when we work together, it's easier to succeed."
Carpenter Palumbo has remained active with the American Heart Association, speaking at BetterU events, attending the Go Red for Women Luncheon, participating in the Capital Region Heart Walk and Run, and most recently, hosting a stop of The Red Couch Tour, where people shared their stories of living with heart disease and stroke.
"Karen Carpenter Palumbo brings an energy and expertise to her role as chair of the Heart Walk and Run that is inspiring," said Theresa Petrone Butts, chair of the Capital Region Advisory Board of the American Heart Association and leader of IT Vendor and Budget Management for MVP Healthcare. "She has spent her entire career in human services, and her leadership of the Heart Walk and Run will result in the Heart Association being able to fund more science, research and programs, furthering the health of our community and far beyond. We're really grateful that she is co-chairing this year's Heart Walk and Run."
Carpenter Palumbo along with co-chair Dr. Suzie Mookherjee, a cardiologist at Albany Medical Center have put together an executive leadership team committed to the Walk's success. The leadership team is:

"We take care of people every day at Vanderheyden," Carpenter Palumbo said. "The American Heart Association is also in the business of making lives better for people. That, combined with my family history of heart disease, made it an easy decision to chair the Heart Walk and Run. The money we raise will make a big difference in the lives of a lot of people. Also, the Heart Walk and Run is a really fun event. Thousands of people come, we learn a lot, we laugh, we shed a few tears, and we improve our own health by taking a heart-healthy walk. I hope you'll all come out and enjoy the day with us!"

Vanderheyden's 1st Annual Spring Fling initiative is in the books! Since the winter was long and a hard one, it's time to celebrate Spring!
Our individuals and Team Members were asked to submit a photo that represented Spring as they saw it.
The winner was Vanderheyden's Philo Group Home in Glens Falls, who rang in Spring with a Spring cleaning day!

F.L.I.P. MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Shawn Salley's nickname is "Flip," but there is more to the name than that.
Salley, one of Vanderheyden's Safety Team Members at the Richard A. Desrochers Educational Center, founded a nonprofit five years ago called "F.L.I.P." - Families Living in Poverty.
The organization targeted the city of Albany, but has expanded to all of the Capital Region, including Troy and Schenectady, the Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn native said.
"My goal is to end poverty in the Capital Region area," he said. "How can I do that with the people in the community to help?"
The concept is similar to pay it forward, Salley said.
"It's the push forward method. We help you, you're good on your feet and what you're capable of. You help the next person," he said. "We helped you to help someone else."
Salley said in the beginning he would do cookouts, feed people in the park, and give out clothing for free by himself.
Now, F.L.I.P. has seven staffers to help with events four times a week and 16 events a month and a Board of Directors filled with community leaders, he said.
The F.L.I.P. organization is a safety net for people, and anyone can call anytime for help, Salley said.
"Lunch and dinner events, clothing events, gang intervention, sex trafficking, prostitution and molestation groups. We do referrals to other places," Salley said. "We also do resumes, where we help them get a job."
The idea for the giveback to the community began when Salley's daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, and his brother died in a car accident in Pittsfield, Massachusetts.
"That's when I started going to community events, like feeding the homeless, and giving them clothing," he said. "I was doing clothing and hygiene products, shoes, everything."
Growing up, Salley said he did six years of placement, mostly in Brooklyn from the age of 9 to 15.
Working at Vanderheyden is the perfect fit, since Salley said his life was transformed.
"I was one of the bad ones," he said. "So that's why I tell these kids you can do it."
In the future, Salley said he would like to expand the services offered for his organization. The services include an after school program for youth. If the child is having trouble at home, Salley said they can stay with his organization, until they get on their feet.
"Our goal is serious," he said. "So it's going to happen. My goals, I'm serious with it."
In August, Salley and his organization will be honored by Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan for the outstanding job his organization is doing for the people of the Capital City.

185TH ANNIVERSARY HISTORY TIDBITS...
Here's some of Vanderheyden's 185th Anniversary History Facts that we have been sharing
with our Team Members each week:
On the evening of October 22, 1833, the Troy Association for the Relief of Destitute Children was unanimously adopted.
On October 23, 1833, officers were elected, the policy of admitting other than orphans was approved, the women of "The Benevolent Society of Troy" were invited to co-operate, and a Superintendent was employed.
On February 4, 1834, the Troy Association for the Relief of Destitute Children obtained a house on Third Street, north of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, "at a rental of $200 per annum."
On December 17, 1834, the name of the Troy Association for the Relief of Destitute Children was changed to The Troy Orphan Asylum." (TOA)
Our Bessey Group Home was once called the Baby House, and was built and equipped for the care of infants, and the training of nurses. On May 21, 1914, nine nurses were the first graduates to be awarded a diploma of "Children's Nurse."
In 1833, breakfast at the TOA consisted of chocolate or milk boiled and poured over bread broken fine or made into milk porridge. In the summer months, the children ate bread and milk, or rice or mush and milk. The breakfast was served at 7:00 a.m. April through November, and at 8:00 a.m. during the winter months.
Charles T. Meneely gifted two bells to the TOA's Spring Avenue home in 1893. On August 17th, 1893, the children moved to their new home on Spring Avenue from their Eighth Street quarters, and were greeted by the sound of a large bell ringing in the bell tower of the main building.
The children of the TOA were the first to march across the Troy-Menands Bridge in a parade at the bridge's informal Dedication Ceremony on July 12, 1933. The children arrived in several buses from Spring Avenue, that was led by a Troy Police Department motorcycle detail.
The estimated cost to build the buildings at the TOA's Spring Avenue location was $140,000 in 1892. TOA already had $62,000 saved for the project, added more cash after selling their Eighth Avenue location, and hoped to raise another $50,000 so the agency would not carry a debt.
Troy Mayor Francis N. Mann was responsible for the creation of the Mayor's Fund in 1848, when he donated his annual $200 salary to the TOA. The gift was "to be invested and the income subject to current use." Troy Mayors Stephen W. Dana and Joseph Warren also donated salaries.
In 1835, an act to incorporate the Troy Orphan Asylum was passed by the New York State Legislature.
