California federal milk marketing order gets widespread support
The three largest milk marketing cooperatives in California -- California Dairies Inc. (CDI), Dairy Farmers of America (DFA) and Land O'Lakes Inc. -- announced that, on behalf of their respective members, they have voted in support of the California Federal Milk Marketing Order (FMMO) as proposed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

USDA held a referendum from April 2 to May 5, 2018. USDA also mailed ballot materials to all known eligible dairy producers supplying milk to the proposed marketing area. FMMOs are legal instruments that regulate the sale of milk between dairy farmers and the first buyer. The California FMMO would become effective if approved by two-thirds of the voting producers or by producers of two-thirds of the milk represented in the voting process.

Federal partners release interagency plan for microbiome research
Microbiomes are microbial communities that exist within greater systems; these systems can be organic in nature - such as plants and animals, including humans and insects - or they can be inorganic, such as soil, water or manufactured products, according to an announcement from the National Science Foundation (NSF).

Microbiologists have long known that microbiomes are important, but recent research has revealed that complex microbial communities are far more widespread than previously thought, residing everywhere from the gut to the homes people live in, NSF said.

A group of 23 U.S. government agencies, including NSF, released on May 1 the "Interagency Strategic Plan for Microbiome Research," which outlines the objectives, structure and principles for coordinated research in this important field of study.

CWD prions discovered in Wisconsin soils for first time
New research from the University of Wisconsin-Madison has, for the first time, detected prions responsible for chronic wasting disease (CWD) in samples taken from sites where deer congregate.

Scientists searched for prions at mineral licks - areas where deer seek out essential nutrients and minerals - in the CWD endemic area across south-central Wisconsin. Out of 11 sites, nine had detectable levels of the disease-causing misfolded proteins. Prions were found both in soil and in water from the sites, as well as in nearby fecal samples from one site, the announcement said.

ADSA News and Happenings
News and Updates for the 2018 Annual Meeting
Dairy Foods Workshop at the  2018 ADSA Annual Meeting.
Make plans now to attend the 2018 ADSA Annual Meeting Dairy Foods Workshop: Spore Sources and Transmission from Farm to Fork-Detection and Control Strategies.
Spore-forming bacteria are known to play a role in the quality of a variety of dairy products, from fluid milk to dairy powders. These organisms represent farm-to-fork contaminants in that they enter the dairy product continuum at the farm level as well as in the processing facility. Therefore, minimizing product failures due to spore-forming bacteria requires a systems approach from production through processing. This workshop will address current research on spore sources, intervention strategies, and methods of detection and will use industry knowledge on interrupting the transmission of spore-forming bacteria into dairy products.
Seats are limited, so register for the workshop soon!
