The CSI Medical Assisting Club recently used money raised during club fundraisers in spring 2019 to spread joy to some charitable organizations. The club presented checks in the amount of $250 each to The Wellness Tree Community Clinic and Make-A-Wish Idaho.

Mountain Bike Mondays
Every Monday at 6:30 p.m. 
Join us mountain biking each week at Auger Falls or Indian Springs! We'll provide instruction, gear, or just people to ride with! Email [email protected] by 12 p.m. on Monday to reserve gear. Evening Climb @ Dierke's Lake
May 30 * 6 - 8:30 p.m. 
Spend the evening at the local crag with the ORC! We'll have some top rope climbs set-up for beginner through intermediate climbers. Gear and instruction are provided. Meet at Dierke's Lake in the west parking lot. Early Morning Bike Rides
Every Wednesday at 6 a.m. (Starts June 5)
Join the ORC crew for an early morning ride from campus to the beautiful Canyon Rim Trail! We'll alternate weeks between path riding and mountain biking! All levels of riders welcome! Join the ORC at the Auger Falls parking lot for a night run down at the local trails! Bring your buddy, bring your dog (+leash & bags) and bring a water bottle for after. We'll provide water, headlamps, and stoke for the run! No registration is required for this event, just show up with your laces tied and your energy high.

AdventureCourseCelebrate 20 Years of Adventure with the CSI Challenge Course
Celebrate 20 Years of Adventure with the CSI Challenge Course! 

We passionately believe that true learning comes from experiencing the world around us, whether through facing personal fears, engaging in shared experiences, or discovery through new adventures. The course is only wood, steel, and man-made materials; it is what is inside each one of us that makes the experience meaningful and real.

The CSI Challenge Program facilitates under the philosophy of "Challenge by Choice."  Because each participant brings to the course their own unique share of experiences and knowledge, we celebrate the fact that a "challenge" differs for every individual. Therefore, we choose to empower participants through positive reinforcement, specific desired learning outcomes (DLO's) for the day, and cater to each person's needs and goals so they can have a personal and collective experience while on the course.

For our 20 year celebration we will be opening the Adventure Course to the public beginning May 28, 2019. The Adventure Course will be open from 4 - 8 p.m. on Wednesdays and 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. on Saturdays. The cost per person is $20. Reservations are not necessary for these open course times.

ArtCampCSI High School Art Intensive Summer Camp
Registration is open for "CSI High School Art Intensive", which runs from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. June 3 - 7. The class will meet in Art Complex 123 on the CSI campus. The registration fee is $225.

The CSI High School Art Intensive is a weeklong introduction to the 2D arts at the College of Southern Idaho. This Camp is designed for students entering grades 9-12 who are interested in Fine Arts and what CSI has to offer potential students. Over the course of a week, students will be introduced to a sampling of all that the photographic medium has to offer. This Camp will include digital, darkroom and alternative photographic processes. Students in this Art Intensive Camp will also learn about the "cultural language" within visual art. Understanding this language will help you create more thoughtful work, but also connect you with other artists and their agendas across all the fine art mediums. We will photograph in some fashion the rest of our lives, so let's get together and do it better! If you are interested in this creative outlet over the summer, this Intensive is a perfect way of discovering self-expression and what a photograph can be! A cell phone, walking shoes, notebook and pen is all that's required for the Camp. If you'd rather use your point & shoot or DSLR camera, please feel free!

Camp Director Ben Lustig holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in Photographic Mediums from East Carolina University, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mass Communication from the University of South Dakota. He taught at East Carolina University and Pitt Community College in Greenville, North Carolina before coming to CSI to teach in the Visual Arts Department. He teaches all digital and darkroom photography sections, but also the Appreciation and History of Photography courses. Ben also lectures on photography while maintaining a studio practice focusing on the photographic mediums and the idea of landscape.

DanceCampApply Now for the CSI/IDAA Summer Dance Camp
The CSI Fine Arts Center is taking registrations for the annual CSI/Idaho Dance Arts Alliance Summer Dance Camp Intensive for intermediate and advanced students who want a fun and challenging dance experience with LA-caliber instructors. Tuition is $95 for the junior day camp, $300 for the one-week intensive, or $430 for the ten-day intensive. Room and board packages are also available. The camp is held in late July on the CSI campus in Twin Falls.

The workshop provides intensive training to students ages 12 and up who have had a minimum of two consecutive years of dance. Students choose their schedule and take five to seven hours of class per day in ballet, jazz, tap, lyrical, hip hop and modern techniques, plus musical theatre, world dance, choreography, pilates, silks, ballet band, and more. The camp features an impressive guest faculty of professional dancers and dance instructors from all over the country who bring a wealth of talent and knowledge to assure each student achieves their highest potential. At the end of the day, all the hard work is offset with fun and exciting downtime activities such as game night, movies, a canyon excursion, swimming parties, a fashion show, an ice cream social, a pizza and autograph party, barbecues, a carnival, a pampering night, and an end of camp recital for family and friends. Well-chaperoned dormitory housing and meals are available.

There is also a junior camp designed to introduce younger students ages 9 through 11 to the concept of an intensive workshop taught by the regular camp faculty in a wide-range of classes over the weekend.  

Students have a choice between the one-week and ten-day intensives. The one-week intensive place July 21 - 26. The ten-day workshop takes place July 21 - 31. Junior camp, available for students aged 9 through 11 regardless of dance experience, runs July 27. There are a small number of need-based scholarships available.

July 29 - August 3, 2019

Information:

This summer the GEDI are pleased to once again offer a debate camp.  Hosted by the College of Southern Idaho, this experience is designed to be valuable for novice- and junior-level competitors. The 5-day camp will benefit students from all forms of debate including policy, Lincoln-Douglas, public forum, student congress, and panel discussion.
 
The purpose of this camp is to help students learn techniques and ethics for debate in an encouraging, safe environment. College professors provide lectures, and college debaters lead our labs which have a ratio of 6:1. Each morning will include lectures, and labs will take up our afternoons. There are also activities and excursions planned for the evenings.
 
In addition, for the entire forensics community, the GEDI will be offering a one-day seminar on Saturday, August 3, 2019. Students, teachers, administrators, and judges are all welcome to attend. There will be sessions on a broad spectrum of speech and debate topics.

Cost:

There are two options for attending the camp, resident and commuter. The resident option is $450 and includes tuition, room, board, supplies, official polo shirt, application fee, and seminar. The commuter option is $270 includes everything except room, and only lunch. To apply, visit www.csi.edu/forensics. Applications are due by June 1.
 
To attend the seminar only, the cost is $20 and includes morning coffee and lunch. There will be four sessions available and we plan to offer multiple options for each. Please email [email protected] to indicate your interest as well as if you wish to present.

IDAHO EDUCATORS CAN NOW APPLY FOR THE MASTER EDUCATOR PREMIUM

The Idaho State Board of Education is accepting applications from Idaho educators interested in receiving the Master Educator Premium.

Created by lawmakers in 2015, the Master Educator Premium is intended to increase pay for highly effective veteran teachers who can demonstrate that they have achieved certain master educator standards.

The 2019 Legislature appropriated more than $7 million for the Premium. Successful applicants will receive additional pay of $4,000 per year for up to three years.

Eligible applicants must meet the following requirements:
  • At least eight years of teaching or pupil services experience and the three most recent years of experience must be continuous and in an Idaho school.
  • Applicant portfolios must demonstrate they have employed "Mastery of Instructional" techniques in their classrooms for at least three of the previous five years and that a majority of their students meet measurable student achievement criteria set at the school district level.
  • Applicants are also required to successfully complete an individual professional learning plan.
"Legislators who created the Master Educator Premium expressed to us that the standards for the Premium need to meet a high bar," State Board of Education Chief Policy and Planning Officer Tracie Bent said. "We brought together educators and administrators to set both the standards and the criteria for evaluating applicant portfolios."

About 350 educators have applied to act as evaluators. Each portfolio will be reviewed and graded by three different evaluators. That process will begin in July and awards are expected to be announced in early August.

The webpage also contains a "Frequently Asked Questions" section, which may be updated as insight is gained from educators using the page.

Health District Ends Investigation Into Gooding Group Exposed To Measles Virus

(GOODING COUNTY) South Central Public Health District (SCPHD) is ending the investigation into nearly 50 people exposed to the measles virus while traveling in Seattle, Washington last month. A team of nurses and epidemiologists interviewed each person exposed, and monitored their health over the last two weeks.

"None of the patients developed measles symptoms and the incubation period is now over. That means there is no more measles risk for the group unless they are exposed to the disease again." said Cheryle Becker, SCPHD Public Health Division Administrator.

During the investigation, the epidemiology team confirmed 42 of the 48 people in Gooding exposed to measles had at least one MMR shot, the vaccine given to protect against measles, mumps and rubella. The remaining six patients were confident they had also received the vaccination, but did not have an immunization record.

"Immunization is likely the reason none of these people got sick," Becker said. "By the time you start showing symptoms it is too late to vaccinate. That's why we urge families to immunize before an outbreak hits their community. The fact that most, if not all, of these travelers were immunized may have protected our entire community from a measles outbreak."

SCPHD will continue to monitor for any disease outbreaks in south-central Idaho. With the summer travel season starting this weekend, this travel exposure to measles shows how easily this disease could be transmitted to our local area. The public health district urges residents to check their immunization records and confirm they are protected against measles and any other disease they may be exposed to several weeks before exposure. If families are planning to travel out of country this summer they can call the public health district to learn what vaccines they should receive before they leave.

Children should receive their first dose of measles vaccine between 12 and 15 months of age; another dose at 4-6 years of age. Measles/mumps/rubella (MMR) vaccine is generally first given at 12 months of age in the United States, but is sometimes recommended for children as young as 6 months of age who are traveling outside the United States or could be infected in an outbreak.

MunicipalBandTwin Falls Municipal Band Concerts Start June 6
Twin Falls Municipal Band starts their 114th consecutive season of concerts at the Twin Falls City Park Bandshell on Thursday, June 6, at 7:30 p.m.
 
Due to popular demand, concerts will start at 7:30 p.m. this summer rather than the traditional 8 p.m. starting time.
 
Director Elizabeth Thomsen, music teacher at Canyon Ridge High School and Robert Stuart Middle School, has planned ten concerts for the Band. Each concert has a theme and features an hour's worth of music. 
 
The season theme is "Across the USA." Here is a theme list and concert dates:
  • June 6 - Road trip!
  • June 13 - MMMM (Marches, Medleys, Musicals, and Melodies)
  • June 20 - Everybody Dance Now
  • June 27 - How's the Weather?
  • July 4 (AT CSI) - Independence Day 2019
  • July 11 - Summertime Magic
  • July 18 - Childhood Favorites
  • July 25 - Holidays (Not just Christmas!)
  • Aug 1 - Opposite Night
  • Aug 6 (at MV Art Center) - Best of Summer
  • Aug 8 - Best of Summer
Municipal Band concerts will happen every Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the Twin Falls City Park Bandshell, June 6 to August 8. A special Fourth of July Concert will be given in the CSI Fine Arts Auditorium.

June 19-22 at 7 p.m.  and June 22 at 2 p.m.

Tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for kids (12 and under) and can be purchased from any cast member, at Kurt's Pharmacy, or at the door.
