Salt & Light Picnic
Reported by Nyrie Bedrossian
On Friday, May 31st, the Salt & Light Youth Group committee invited members, facilitators and their families for an evening picnic at Manorhaven Park in Port Washington. We were blessed with a crystal clear sky and perfect weather to enjoy some great outdoor family fun, including a joint adult/kid soccer game, volleyball game, and hula hoops. Food was provided by a Greek Food Truck, which was parked right next to our picnic area and seemed to entertain the crowd for a while, only to be followed by an Ice Cream truck which was brought in specifically for our picnic and thrilled the kids and adults alike!

We were so happy to see all the smiling faces that evening, including all the parents and even some grandparents who joined in the fun. It truly turned out to be a spectacular celebration of another successful year of our Salt & Light Youth Group and we look forward to continuing and building upon our successes next year! We wish all of our youth group members and their families a fantastic and safe summer!
Ways to Wellness-The 3rd Annual Panel Discussion on Mental Health
Reported by Anahid Ugurlayan
On Sunday, June 2, parishioners gathered to hear an esteemed panel of speakers -- Yeraz Markarian, Ph.D., Dr. Hagop Gorgissian and Dr. Carlo Bayrakdarian -- discuss the importance of mental health.  Anahid Ugurlayan opened the program and explained that mental health awareness has been growing exponentially in the U.S. and abroad, from celebrities ranging from Olympic swimming champion Michael Phelps to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry discussing their own mental health issues and supporting charities that help children and adults suffering from mental health.  Ms. Ugurlayan stressed that mental health is as important as physical health. She then introduced the speakers.

Dr. Markarian is a licensed clinical psychologist, Assistant Professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai as well as a research scientist at Mount Sinai, and the founder and executive director of Healthy Mind NY, where she provides individual and group therapy, family counseling and parenting skills.  She spoke about different forms of anxiety and evidence-based treatments used by psychologists to assist their patients. Dr. Markarian explained that individuals in communities impacted by trauma, such as ours, grapple with anxiety and depression at different stages of their lives. She also discussed techniques individuals who are not in therapy can use -- for example, mindfulness (deep breathing exercises) -- to alleviate anxiety and stress.

Dr. Gorgissian is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and an Adjunct Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, St. George University who also has a private practice in Queens.  He expanded upon the topic of anxiety to discuss different phobias which are linked to anxiety. He explained that medical attention may be needed when the phobia disrupts one's life in a meaningful way and that there is no shame in asking for help.

Last but not least, Dr. Carlo Bayrakdarian, a geriatric psychiatrist who has a private practice throughout Westchester and in New York City and was a Clinical Instructor in Psychiatry at the Cornell University Medical Center, discussed the importance of pharmacogenetics -- i.e., genetic testing which allows psychiatrists to better target therapies to their patients.  Dr. Bayrakdarian explained that prior to pharmacogenetics, individuals would be prescribed different medications from their family doctors and other specialists (including a psychiatrist) with diminishing degrees of efficacy.

A Q&A followed and, as in prior years, the parishioners stayed after the program to talk to the panelists.

Many thanks to Der Nareg, who is also a licensed mental health counselor in addition to being our beloved pastor, and to the speakers for taking time from their busy schedules to destigmatize mental illness and educate our parishioners on the importance of mental health.  Interest in this program is growing because this is a topic that has been a taboo for too long. May this program continue to evolve over time and meet the needs of our parishioners.

Book Of Acts (2.1-20)
When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. Utterly amazed, they asked: "Aren't all these who are speaking Galileans? Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language? Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome  (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs-we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!" Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, "What does this mean?"
Some, however, made fun of them and said, "They have had too much wine."
Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: "Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It's only nine in the morning! No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:
"'In the last days, God says,
I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your young men will see visions,
your old men will dream dreams.
Even on my servants, both men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days,
    and they will prophesy.
I will show wonders in the heavens above
and signs on the earth below,
blood and fire and billows of smoke.
The sun will be turned to darkness
    and the moon to blood
before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO JOHN (12.12-23)
"All this I have spoken while still with you. But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
"You heard me say, 'I am going away and I am coming back to you.' If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe. I will not speak with you much longer, for the prince of this world is coming. He has no hold on me, but the world must learn that I love the Father and that I do exactly what my Father has commanded me.
"Come now; let us leave.

Liturgical Calendar (Crossroads)
FEAST OF PENTECOST: The Descent of the Holy Spirit
This Sunday (June 9), the Armenian Church celebrates the Feast of Pentecost (Hokekaloust), the descent of the Holy Spirit to the Apostles, and the birth of the Church. Jesus had commanded His apostles to "Go therefore to all nations and make them my disciples," (Matthew 28:19). Recognizing the difficulty of this great responsibility, Christ had advised his disciples not to begin their teaching mission until after the "descent of the Holy Spirit."

In the Acts of the Apostles, we read that on that day of Pentecost the apostles gathered in one place, and suddenly a strong wind seemed to fill the house in which they were assembled, and they were filled with the Holy Spirit (see reading above). It was the Jewish feast of Pentecost (Shabuoth) commemorating the giving of the law on Mount Sinai and many different people from different lands had come to Jerusalem. They marveled that they could understand the Apostles' words. This day when the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles marked the beginning of the mission of the Church to spread the Good News throughout the world.

In a sense, Pentecost is the opposite of what occurred in the Old Testament story of the Tower of Babel when God disapproved of the building of a tower to reach the heavens and he created confusion by having the workers suddenly speak in different tongues, and unable to understand each other. At Pentecost He gave the disciples the ability to speak other tongues and thus be able to be understood by everyone everywhere.

Life-creating God, Spirit and lover of mankind, with tongues of fire you enlightened those united with one accord in love; therefore we also celebrate today your holy descent.

Filled with joy by your coming the Holy apostles began in different-sounding tongues to call into unity them that had been divided from each other; therefore we also celebrate today your holy descent.

By spiritual and holy baptism through them you have adorned the universe in a new and radiant garment; therefore we also celebrate your holy descent.
(From the Canon for the First Day of Pentecost according to the Liturgical Canons of the Armenian Church)
