Provost's Message
Dr. Sylvia Alva

Dear Colleagues:

The search for the Associate Vice President (AVP) for Academic Programs has concluded. I am pleased to inform you that Dr. Laura J. Massa has accepted the position, effective June 25, 2018.

Laura Massa has served as the Director of Assessment at Loyola Marymount University (LMU) since 2008. In this role, she guided LMU through the development and implementation of a university assessment plan; a plan that received commendation from the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC). Through consultations and educational resources at LMU, Laura providedsupport for degree program assessment, core curriculum (general education) assessment, academic program development and review, and disciplinary-accreditation. Last year, Laura published a book for faculty on how to engage in meaningful and manageable program assessment. She also shepherded faculty through successful proposals to offer LMU's second and third online graduate degree programs.

Laura holds a doctorate from UC Santa Barbara in Cognitive Psychology with an emphasis in Quantitative Methods in the Social Sciences. Her master's degree in psychology is from CSU Sacramento, and her undergraduate degree in psychology is from Dominican University of California.

I want to thank Dr. Larisa Preiser-Houy for her service and support as the Interim AVP for Academic Programs and her leadership throughout the WSCUC accreditation process. To ensure continuity in the submission of the WSCUC self-study, Larissa will serve as special consultant for the WSCUC accreditation in fall 2018. In spring 2019, she will return to the Associate Dean position in the College of Business.

I also would like to thank the search committee, co-chaired by Dr. Francelina Neto  and Dr. Stephen Osborn, for conducting a smooth and successful search.

Sincerely,

Sylvia A. Alva
Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs
