Because rain is predicted, tonight's Craft Beer Block Party will move INDOORS to the heated Mushroom Festival Tent in Veterans Park, from 5-9 p.m.
The 5th annual Block Party will kick off the 59th Annual National Morel Mushroom Festival, which continues through Sunday.
This is THE kickoff party festival, featuring more than 20 craft breweries and wineries, restaurants and live music from Jedi Mind Trip. The party draws a big crowd to Boyne City.

Lavender Hill Farm and the Boyne Area Chamber are hosting this year's Regional Business After Hours for all four chambers in Charlevoix County from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 21st. Members of the Boyne, Charlevoix, East Jordan and Beaver Island Chambers of Commerce will be attending this event, which always draws a big crowd. For the past 21 years, these chambers have teamed up to host this joint Business After Hours to provide networking opportunities for the entire county. Admission is $5 including hors d'oeuvres, ice cream, cash bar, drawings and networking. There will be great food and beverages as always.
WEAR YOUR LAVENDER to be entered in a special gift basket drawing of county-wide goodies.
LAVENDER HILL FARM is located at 7354 Horton Bay Road, two miles north of Horton Bay. They are now open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This summer, the farm will be hosting 12 concerts in The Series at Lavender Hill Farm, and tickets are now on sale on their website. The Moxie Strings open The Series on Saturday, June 22nd.

 The Mushroom Festival Wine & Dine gourmet dinner is nearly sold out for both seatings on Friday. The popular gourmet dinner is held at the Beach House restaurant on Deer Lake. Enjoy scenic views of the sunset over Deer Lake as you experience morel-inspired creations paired with wines. Charlevoix County Transit is providing free transportation from the Festival Tent in Boyne City to the Beach House. This event always sells out, so don't wait to make your reservations.

Mushroom Festival is #1 on Pure Michigan's spring list
 Pure Michigan has included the Boyne City Mushroom Festival as the #1 recommendation on its list of "20+ Things to Do in Michigan: Your Ultimate Spring Bucket List." Here's what they had to say: After a cold and snowy winter, all of Michigan celebrates the arrival of spring. Consider adding these things to do in Pure Michigan to your spring travel bucket list.
1. Pick (and Taste) Morel Mushrooms
Locals are pretty tight-lipped about where to harvest Michigan's best morels. However, you can learn mushrooming secrets at the annual Mesick Mushroom Festival, a favorite for its guided morel hikes. There is also Boyne City's National Morel Mushroom Festival, which focuses on dining, allowing visitors to dig into area chefs' morel-themed creations. Boyne's festival is May 16-19. MUSHROOM MUSIC - The Boyne Chamber has booked high-energy band Jedi Mind Trip to play at the Craft Beer Block Party, and the Festival Committee has booked Northern Michigan band Yankee Station to play Saturday night in the festival tent in Veterans Park. Jedi Mind Trip plays classic rock and some dance tunes, mostly from the 70s and 80s. Band members live in the Saginaw/Midland/Bay City area. Feature story.

 Participating restaurants have been announced for the The Taste of Morels, one of the premier events of the Boyne City Mushroom Festival. New Visitors Guide promotes Boyne Area 20,000 times
 The Boyne Area Chamber's new Visitors Guide/Business Directory will arrive tomorrow, Friday, featuring a photo of kayakers on Lake Charlevoix with downtown Boyne City in the background.
The Chamber will distribute 20,000 copies of the new guide to members, highway Welcome Centers and high-traffic locations around Northern Michigan. "We encourage our members to keep the guide handy and to support the businesses and organizations listed in it," said Chamber Executive Director Kim Akins. Every Chamber member business and organization is listed in the publication.
The publication was produced by Harbor House Publishers in cooperation with the chamber. It is also available as a digital magazine, which contains interactive content, including page-turning, links to websites and video, as well as a full search function.

Join us for Charlevoix State Bank ribbon-cutting this morning
 Everyone is invited to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Charlevoix State Bank at 11:30 a.m. today, Thursday, at their new location, 102 S. Lake St. in Boyne City. The bank operated a loan office in Boyne City for the past three years, and this month opened their full-service bank office in the space formerly occupied by Fifth Third Bank. Loan office manager John Cool managed the loan office and is now the manager of the new full-service office. The bank's move out of its loan office opened the way for the Chamber and Boyne City Main Street to move into adjacent offices in that location at 113 and 115 S. Lake Street.
Established in 1994, Charlevoix State Bank is the only community owned and operated bank headquartered in the Lake Charlevoix area. Their goal is "to develop long-term relationships with our customers and provide the friendly and personal service that is being lost in this era of banking mega-mergers."

Duck Race tix on sale; You could win $1,000 on 4th of July
 We're getting our ducks in a row in preparation for the Duck Race!
$10 tickets go on sale today for the Boyne Chamber's 31st annual Duck Race at 2 p.m. on July 4th in the Boyne River. You can purchase tickets at today's Craft Beer Block Party or - after that - visit the Chamber office at 115 S. Lake Street, Suite A. You can also buy duck tickets at Evenings at the Gazebo concerts in Old City Park.
On July 4th, dozens of spectators will be watching and cheering as up to 1,200 ducks float down the river to the finish line behind Lynda's Real Estate. Each ticket and duck is numbered, and the lucky owner of the fastest duck will win $1,000. Second prize is $250, third prize $100, and 4th through 10th prizes are $50 each.

Boyne City Farmers Market Summer Grand Opening is May 25

The Boyne City Farmers Market will hold its summer grand opening on Saturday, May 25th from 8 a.m. to Noon in Veterans Park. The market will be unveiling a new layout, with over 60 vendors confirmed for the 2019 season. Bob Fawcett will be the featured musician, courtesy of Blissfest and Grain Train.
"We are so pleased to be back outside, and look forward to a busy summer filled with fresh, local produce and more," Angelika Rasper, Farmers Market Manager, said.
Get ready for the full summer season by shopping at the market this Saturday, May 18th during the National Morel Mushroom Festival. A small number of vendors will be set up along the sidewalk in Veterans Park along Lake Street.
The summer Boyne City Farmers Market takes place every Wednesday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon in Veteran's Park through mid-October. Watch for special dates featuring kids activities and the Boyne District Library Bookmobile.

City hosts Tuesday info session on development incentives
 The City of Boyne City will hold a public hearing at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 21, to discuss the possibility of using a new financial incentive tool to assist the developers of the Lake Street Lofts project. PA 210 is the law created by the State of Michigan creating a financial tool that can be considered for redevelopment projects, freezing the taxes on the properties involved at their pre-improved levels for a period of up to 10 years. After that time the tax levels increase to reflect the higher improved value of the property involved. It provides a financial incentive/tool to redevelop properties while not reducing existing tax revenues. While Boyne City has used similar tools to help developments downtown and in the Business Park this is the first time we have used this tool, which is why the city is holding this informational session. Planning commission considers 3 major projects Monday

Lofts on Lake Street
|
The Boyne City Planning Commission meets next Monday, May 20th and will be considering site plan reviews for the Surgery Center on Moll Drive and M-75 in the Business Park, the Lofts on Lake Street project on North Lake and State Streets, as well as a preliminary plan review regarding a possible expansion of Lakeview Village Mobile Home Park between North Lake and Park Streets.
This was one of a number of items reported during Tuesday's City Commission meeting. Some other highlights include:
+ Milling and resurfacing of North Lake Street between State Street and the Main Boat Launch is scheduled to begin on Monday, May 20
th
. The road will remain open to traffic during the project.
+ Road maintenance projects are making good progress with the streets crushed quickly last week, Front Street receiving its base coat and the base coats on the other streets scheduled to be installed Wednesday. The project is scheduled to be completed before Memorial Day.
+ The Michigan Economic Development Corporation has formally approved the up to $408,415 grant for the Pavilion project. They estimate it will take another 8 weeks or so to complete their required processes. The majority of the work will take place after Labor Day.
+ Last week work began in earnest on the improvements for Riverside Park. They are expected to be completed by the end of May.

 Downtown Boyne City stores will be giving away morels and gift certificates on Saturday, May 18, during the Mushroom Festival. The 8th annual Great Morel Giveaway includes 26 businesses that give away one pound of morels each - or a gift certificate if morels are not available. There is no cost or purchase required to enter - simply register at any or all of the participating stores. Every place you register gives you another chance to win. Boyne City American Legion and VFW and the Boyne Area Veterans Memorial Committee will hold memorial services at local cemeteries from 8 to 11 a.m. Monday, May 27. At 11:45 a.m. the veterans Memorial Day Procession will leave the American Legion Post, proceeding north on Lake Street to Veterans Memorial Park for services beginning at 12 noon. The Boyne City High School Band will perform, and all area veterans are invited to participate.

City picks up leaves on Mondays, Fridays; Rubbish pickup soon
 The city of Boyne City provides a city-wide leaf pickup service, now in progress, and rubbish pick-up starting May 22.
LEAF PICKUP is on Mondays and Fridays from now through June 7, Please set bagged leaves curbside anytime after the first day of pick up, in biodegradable paper yard waste bags. City crews will pick up bags as time allows.
Brush will not be picked up curbside, but may be brought to the North Boyne Compost Site. You may haul your own leaves, either bagged in biodegradable bags or unbagged, to the compost site on Robinson Street, open seven days a week for your convenience. They may NOT be left in traditional plastic trash bags. Yard waste details.
RUBBISH PICKUP is for larger items that cannot be disposed of with your household trash such as mattresses, furniture and light construction debris. These pickups will be:
> Wednesdays: May 22 & 29 and June 5 for areas including Main Street and south
> Thursdays: May 23 & 30 and June 6 for areas north of Main Street.

The Boyne City Rotary Club will hold an "open meeting" at 5:30 p.m. Monday evening, May 20th, at Red Mesa Grill. The public is invited to join us and learn how Rotary contributes to the Boyne community and how our service projects benefit people around the world. This meeting will take the place of the usual Monday morning meeting. The club holds an evening open meeting once a month, on the third Monday.

Electronics & hazardous waste drop-off June 7-8 near Charlevoix
Electronics and hazardous waste collection will be held from 5-8 p.m. Friday, June 7, and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday, June 8 in the Charlevoix area. The spring event is typically held near Charlevoix and the September event is normally held in Boyne City, but the exact location will will be given out when scheduling reservation. Acceptable electronics and hazardous waste items include computers, TVs, appliances, tires, fluorescent light bulbs, oil-based paints, chemicals and lawn fertilizers. You can make a reservation online from May 28th-June 6th or by calling 231-547-7221 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. on those days. Collection location information will be available during registration. Run (or walk) with your dog in Humane Society 5K on Saturday
The Charlevoix Area Humane Society Benefit will host the "Run For Their Lives 5K" run and walk on Saturday, May 18 during the Boyne City Morel Mushroom Festival, raising funds for the shelter and its animals. Runners of all ages are invited to attend, as well as friendly canines. The course is out and back along Lake Charlevoix. The event starts at 8 a.m. with registration from 6:30-7:25 a.m. in Sunset Park behind the log cabin. Runners can also register in advance by filling out this form, emailing it to

The Boyne Arts Collective is offering a guided open studio art class featuring instructor Jennie Kimbrough. A guided open studio class environment combines the benefits of private instruction with those of a group classroom environment. Bring your own materials and projects, and get individualized instruction for the work you want to create, all while making art in a group setting. You will be inspired by other artists' work and have the opportunity to share and collaborate with fellow classmates. Instruction will be tailored to your individual art practice, needs, and desire to learn. You get to create what you want to create, and Jennie will help you make it better. Bring all your own materials, including drop cloths or table cloths to protect the tables. Tables and chairs provided.

Master Gardeners hosts Spring Plant Sale June 1 in Petoskey
MSU Extension Northern Michigan Master Gardener Association will be hosting its annual Spring Plant Sale from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, June 1, at Gabriel Farm, located at 2800 East Mitchell Road, in Petoskey. A wide variety of perennials, herbs, ground covers and shrubs will be available at bargain prices. Master Gardeners have been digging and dividing their plants in preparation for this annual event, and because these home-grown plants are already acclimated to our Northern Michigan growing conditions there is no need to harden them off, just plant immediately. All plants have been state-inspected and certified.
In addition to the outdoor plants, a selection of houseplants will be for sale. A Garden Market Place will offer everything garden-related, from tools to books and from pots to planters. Horticultural information on Smart Gardening practices will be available, as well as refreshments and a make-and-take pollinator workshop for the kids.
Those attending the June 1 plant sale will have the opportunity to increase their garden knowledge at educational presentations planned throughout the day:
* 10 a.m. - Local Master Gardeners will share tips and tricks of plant division in live demonstrations.
* 11 a.m. - Nancy Cunningham will talk about "Native Plants That Are Good For The Lakeshore."
* Noon - Ashley Bruder of Ocqueoc will present information on growing, harvesting and drying herbs in her program titled "Making Herbs Accessible."
Other programs include a series of short videos in a loop on the biological impact of 5G and other wireless radiation, with related books and articles.

The Boyne Valley Garden Club hosts a panel of Club Master Gardeners who will talk about how to become a Master Gardener. Refreshments and social time begin at 12:30PM on Thursday, May 23rd at the Boyne District Library, followed by the meeting at 1PM. Guests are always welcome to attend.

Senior Center serves Wednesday dinners through September
Wednesday night dinners have begun at all Charlevoix County Senior Centers and will continue through September. The Senior Centers are open from 2-7 p.m. on Wednesdays and Wednesday Dinner is served from 5 to 6. Next Wednesday's dinner will include a Taco Bar, and there will be a Mother's Day lunch on Friday, May 10th. There is no lunch served at the Senior Centers on Wednesdays. We have also added some fun themes to our Wednesday Night, ask the Site Coordinator about what is being planned for your Senior Center location.
Lunch will continue to be served at the center on Mondays, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. The centers are now offering a Cold Plate menu item in addition to our hot meal item. Veggie Burgers are still available daily on demand and we are still offering Fish in addition to our hot meal every Friday.

ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION - Possible responses to illegal immigration will be discussed at Lifetree Café on Sunday, May 19 at 6:30. The program, titled "An Immigrant in the Sanctuary: When Faith and Politics Collide," features a filmed interview with Rev. Mike Morran, whose church offered sanctuary to Arturo Hernandez Garcia, an undocumented immigrant. Garcia moved into the church basement knowing he faced immediate deportation should he leave the church building. Garcia also appears on camera. "Arturo has worked in the U.S. for over 15 years, and his wife and two daughters are here," Morran said of Garcia. "There are a lot of good reasons this man should be able to stay with his family." At this Lifetree episode, participants will have the opportunity to share their views concerning illegal immigration, immigration reform, and responding to undocumented immigrants.
