New data shows a continuing decline in the number of shark finning incidents occurring in the Parties to the Nauru Agreement (PNA) purse seine tuna fishery, including the  MSC certified skipjack and yellowfin free-school fishery .

As part of its  ongoing review and consultation  on shark finning, the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) commissioned fisheries experts,  Poseidon Aquatic Resource Management  to conduct research into shark finning in tropical tuna fisheries engaged in the MSC program.

This research has provided the MSC with new data showing a decline in the number of shark finning incidents within the MSC certified PNA purse seine tuna fishery, from 266 incidents in 2013 to 3 in 2017, a reduction of 99% (Figure 1).  Continue reading here (Source: Marine Stewardship Council).
New Alliance for Indonesian one-by-one Tuna Launches at World’s Largest Seafood Trade Show

This week, organisations at the forefront of Indonesia’s sustainable fishing movement announced the official launch of the One-by-One Indonesia Tuna Alliance at the Seafood Expo Global trade event in Brussels, Belgium. The Alliance brings together the strengths of three organisations – the International Pole & Line Foundation (IPNLF), Yayasan Masyarakat dan Perikanan Indonesia (MDPI), and the Indonesian Pole and Line & Handline Fisheries Association (AP2HI) – to promote Legal, Reported and Regulated (LRR) fishing, and improve sustainable practices and transparency in one-by-one seafood supply chains in Indonesia.

Considered the world’s largest producer of tuna, Indonesia has the most abundant tuna fisheries in the world. However, illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing incurred losses to the country are estimated to be as high as US$ 3 billion a year. Over the past four years, the government of Indonesia has reshaped the fishery sector, aiming to harness the country’s potential as a leading maritime and fishing nation. Spanish Tuna Fleet Group (OPAGAC) Enters MSC Certification Process

A Spanish tuna fishing fleet has begun the process to assess all its fisheries to the MSC Standard for sustainable fishing.

The fleet will assess all fisheries including operations in the three oceans in which it operates (Pacific, Indian and Atlantic oceans) and for the three species it captures (Yellowfin, Skipjack and Big Eye).

The objective of the fleet, grouped under OPAGAC, is to obtain the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification. Independent auditors from Lloyd’s Register hired by OPAGAC will evaluate its fishing activities according to science-based standards set by the MSC. If the fishery is found to meet the MSC’s requirements, it will achieve MSC certification for a large part of its tropical tuna captures which amount to 380,000 tons per year, 8% of captures worldwide.
