Community Health Center Tackles Opioid Crisis with Telemedicine Partnership
Bryan Gillespie, LCSW
Mantachie Rural Health Care, one of the state’s 21 FQHCs, partners with the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson to provide Northeastern Mississippi residents with expanded behavioral health services through telehealth. The program operates three days a week with a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, as the overseeing provider with Mantachie’s Bryan Gillespie, who is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Services offered include assessments, counseling, and medication management.
Through federal grant funding, new services for opioid and substance abuse have been added to combat the growing opioid crisis. Bryan’s passion for people continues to make a difference in the lives of rural residents and telemedicine has aided in extending services beyond their rural borders. “We all have anxieties,” said Bryan “We all have stresses in life. Sometimes, we get to the point where we can’t handle any more.”
ROMP Excites Upcoming Physicians to Work at CHCs
Every Spring, the Office of MS Physician’s Workforce (OMPW) at UMMC hosts the Rural Opportunities for Mississippi Physicians, a career fair that highlights great opportunities in rural MS for doctors. The event is held in connection with MS Academy of Family Physician’s (MAFPF) Conference, an educational event for practicing physicians, and Spring Fling, an event specifically for residents and medical students.

MPHCA represented CHC opportunities to the attendees. Thanks to OMPW for our partnership to assist in finding the next generation of Community Health providers.
Bonnie Hodge, UMMC School of Medicine Student, was one of the winners of a YETI Coldster at the 2018 Rural Opportunities For Mississippi Physicians event at the Marriott Downtown Jackson on Saturday, April 21, 2018. CMS Refreshing the Certified Application Counselor (CAC) Program.
CMS is refreshing the certified application counselor (CAC) program by implementing an enhanced application and renewal process. The new application process will promote better engagement with our CAC Designated Organizations (CDOs) and provide the assister community with an improved user experience. As we undergo updates to the application, we are temporarily suspending the acceptance of new applications for participation in this program. The online CAC program application has been removed at this time.

As part of the refresh effort, we are also improving the online application tool to provide new features that allow CDOs to access and update your organization’s contact information in real time, as necessary (e.g., address updates, adding or removing states where assisters are working, etc.). Contact information updates ensure that CMS has the most up-to-date information for your organization, which is critical when providing programmatic updates and communications.
