May 19, 2019

This week we're presenting Center for Maine Contemporary Art, Catamount Arts and Society of Arts + Crafts with exhibitions illustrating space, from the physical space around us to the metaphorical spaces we create for ourselves. There are other interesting and exciting events happening soon for those who want more.

Artscope is sponsoring Fresh Paint 2019 at the Copley Society of Art. On May 5, CoSo artists set up their easels around the greater Boston area to paint landmarks and treasured locations. The works will be sold today, May 16, at the Fresh Paint Gala today. Tickets to the gala can be bought here.

We're also sponsoring "Unusual Threads: Stitching Together the Future of Fashion" at Southern Vermont Arts Center from May 11June 23.

Artscope is proud to be exhibiting at Art Basel Switzerland 2019 this summer from June 1316!

Ellis-Beauregard Fellowship Exhibition at Center for Maine Contemporary Art
in Rockland, Maine through June 16

CMCA
Wade Kavanaugh and Stephen B. Nguyen.

Ellis-Beauregard Fellowship Exhibition is on view at Center for Maine Contemporary Arts through June 16. Featured artists Wade Kavanaugh and Stephen B. Nguyen are the first recipients of the Ellis-Beauregard Foundation Fellowship award, selected by a blind jury process from among over 200 applicants. The jurors included Jeffrey Peabody, Vice President and Director of Matthew Marks Gallery in New York City, and Alison de Lima Greene, Isabel Brown Wilson Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at The Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Texas. Kavanaugh and Nguyen have collaborated in their art for more than a decade, and have become known for their inventive and immersive installations. For this exhibition, they use wood to mimic the coast of Maine and create a turbulent ocean breaking against the shore. The wooden waves look as though they may crash down and soak the viewer at any moment, and they keep the viewer immersed in the exhibition even as they stay dry. Center for Maine Contemporary Art is located at 21 Winter Street in Rockland, Maine and is open WednesdaySaturday 10:00 a.m.5:00 p.m. and Sunday 12:005:00 p.m. For more information, visit cmcanow.org/ebf-wade-kavanaugh-stephen-nguyen.

City Animals
Co-curators: Julie Croston and Michelle Lougee

May 28June 14, 2018

Reception: Thursday, May 30, 6:008:00 p.m.

Workshop: Sunday, June 2, 1:003:00 p.m.

The City Animals exhibit will display photography, puppets and other 2D and 3D art by adult, child and youth artists that depict urban wild animal species and their traces. What do we know and feel about wild animals in our cities? Why and when do we take notice of them? What do we make of their sharing of our habitat? How do we represent them in art?

The human view of the animal world encompasses reverence, disdain, fright, humor or playfulness. In the city, their existence is tenuous, ever shifting, hidden. In some cases, more "flexible" species are in the process of replacing others. Cambridge has both sanctuary spaces for wildlife and, like many cities, a history of controversy about animals as nuisances, pests or as a source of danger. What do we require of wildlife? How do we paint them, contain them and celebrate them?

Debra Weisberg: Drawn to Touch at Catamount Arts
in St. Johnsbury, Vermont through June 14

Catamount
Debra Weisberg at work.

The Fried Family Gallery at Catamount Arts is showing Debra Weisberg: Drawn to Touch, an exhibition of sculpture and works on paper, through June 14. Weisberg is deeply interested in exploratory drawings, particularly as the base for touch-oriented work. Her sculptures in Drawn to Touch utilize tape, fiber, fiberglass mesh and hydrostone to create tactile shapes that both work with and against the material plane. Weisberg has exhibited at numerous venues in Boston and beyond, including at the Paper Biennial in the Netherlands, but no matter where she exhibits, her work comes back to one premise: "All of my work is rooted in drawing," Weisberg says. She aims to create a sensory awareness of the spatial relationships between the human body and material, an awareness she describes as "dynamic, improvisational and mutable." Debra Weisberg: Drawn to Touch draws attention to space and matter and allows the viewer to experience it, too. Catamount Arts is located at 115 Eastern Avenue in St. Johnsbury, Vermont and is open MondaySaturday 11:00 a.m.8:00 p.m. and Sunday 1:008:00 p.m. For more information, please visit catamountarts.org/visual-art/fried-family-gallery.

PRIED at Society of Arts + Crafts
in Boston, Massachusetts through June 30

Society of Arts + Crafts
Larry Buller, Nancy Boi, 2016, low-fire clay, terra sigillata, low-fire glaze and decals.

Society of Arts + Crafts is now showing PRIED through June 30. Curated by Izzy Berdan and Dave J. Bermingham, PRIED is a celebration of LGBTQ+ artists and their work. June is Pride Month, and that means something different for everyone in the LGBTQ+ community, from validation to hedonism to the questioning of queerness and sexuality themselves. On the other hand, not all the artwork in PRIED is hinged on that queerness. As Society of Arts + Crafts explains, "PRIED celebrates and recognizes the individuals who create works that may or may not be made based around the image of a queer person, just as any other maker is not limited to creating works about their own identity." In essence, PRIED is both a safe space and creative platform for its artists, and a space that unapologetically challenges the viewer's expectations. As Society of Arts + Crafts asks, "If one pries the closet doors open, are they willing to come to terms with all of the skeletons. . .and maybe the glitter?" Society of Arts + Crafts is located at 100 Pier 4, Suite 200 in Boston, Massachusetts and is open TuesdaySaturday 10:00 a.m.6:00 p.m., Thursday 10:00 a.m.9:00 p.m. and Sunday 11:00 a.m.5:00 p.m. For more information, please visit societyofcrafts.org/current-exhibition/pried.
