Happy Monday,
What a great time of year. We celebrated the last day of AP testing and the seniors' last day with a widely fun Talent Show and Backyard Bash. Thank you to all those that helped make it happen.
Today seniors will finish checkout and have a mini-rehearsal for graduation. Good luck to them.
All other students, it's time to gear up for Finals. The schedule can be found here.
Remember, if you miss a final you need to contact the teacher and arrange for make-ups. Make-up days are by appointment only.

Last week our Challenge 5280 team presented their policy on sexual wellness hoping to address the culture at TJ around issues of sexual assault and harassment.
Logan Cecil, Joe McComb, and
Malia McDorman led our team to develop this policy that they felt could bring positive change to our community. With their leadership and the tireless effort of
Phoebe Briney, Bianca Escobar, Ivonne Hernandez, Mariah Hurd-Crews, Jael Iyema, Safinat Mohamed, and Ava Ward, we placed 2nd and they will all be rewarded wit
h an opportunity to participate in a service project in Puerto Rico!
It is truly inspiring to see these young people get excited to be of service. They will be joining the 1st Place team at Kunsmiller and the student choice winner at Lincoln. With 17 DPS schools presenting, it was enlightening to see the range of issues our young people face, and amazing to see such dedication and passion to advocate for themselves! I could not be prouder to be a witness to our TJ students' commitment to social justice.

SkillsUSA Seniors in the CCT Magnet Pathways Capstone class participate every year in the Project of the Year dinner sponsored by Project Management Institute (PMI). Students prepare all year learning the 10 knowledge areas for Project Management, and put them into practice as they work on their senior capstone project. At the dinner, students are given the opportunity to present their projects to the Denver Metro PM Mile Hi Charter Members. Students are judged and recognized for their ability to integrate the principles of Project Management.

Important announcement for seniors!

Due to the low response rate (30%) to the survey sent out about lunch on graduation day, we will not be providing lunch on graduation day. Please plan accordingly to stay at DU from noon until after graduation as there will be no time to leave between rehearsal and graduation. Thank you.

Staff Appreciation Picnic
|
The end of the school year is quickly approaching so it's time to come together one last time before summer to say THANK YOU to the wonderful staff at TJHS for all that they do for our kids. TJ's PTO will host a staff appreciation luncheon on
Friday, May 24th
from 11:30 am - 12:30 pm in Room 111.
We are getting ready for summer by hosting a picnic themed lunch. The PTO will provide the fried chicken, but we need parents to sign up to contribute classic picnic side dishes, desserts and drinks. Please help us make this end of year celebration a great one by contributing to the lunch in any way you can. If you are not available on the 24th, click here to donate. Any amount helps!
Please be sure to write Teacher Appreciation in the comment section during check out so we know what the donations are for. You can also bring in check or cash donations to the office by May 22nd.
Dropping Off Your Food Donations:
On Friday, May 24th, drop off your item in room 111 between 10:00-11:00 am. If your item does not need to be refrigerated, you can drop it off in the main office kitchen on Thursday before 3pm. We have plenty of serving utensils so no need to bring any of your own.
The staff truly appreciates your support. We know life is crazy this time of year, but we can't do this without your help! Thank you in advance for your generosity!

Free Summer Lunches for Kids!
|
Lunchbox Express, a program of Jewish Family Service, provides free lunches to children during the summer when they don't have access to free or reduced-fee lunches in their schools. Meals are provided at 21 sites throughout the Denver metro area via repurposed mini school buses and some static sites.

The end of the year has a lot of events and we need your help! Join us for the last meeting of the year as we approve classroom grant requests from staff and finish up plans for teacher appreciation and other community events for the last few weeks of school. We can't be the best community we can be without you!

Denver STEM College and Career Fair
|
|
The Denver STEM College and Career Fair will be at Colorado School of Mines on Saturday, June 8th from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.!
Free and open to the public, STEM College and Career Fairs provide a forum for colleges and universities to share STEM-related educational opportunities with prospective students and their parents; and, allows representatives from industry, professional associations/societies and non-profit organizations to educate students and parents on STEM-related career opportunities.
This is a great opportunity for Colorado High School students interested in STEM fields to hear about their opportunities, both in Colorado and around the nation!

Summer School Information
|
Counselors have been meeting with off track students and registering them for Summer School. If your student has failed courses and might be off track, please have them contact their counselor. The Summer School Program is available for students who have failed courses and is not available for original credit or to get ahead with credits. You can also email your student's counselor with questions or to verify that your student has been registered. Please see the information below for details.
Dates and times:
The Regional Summer School Program will begin June 18, 2019 and run through July 19, 2019. Classes will take place Monday-Friday from 8:00 a.m.- 12:00 p.m. Classes will not be in session July 4th or July 5th. Breakfast will be served every morning from 7:30 a.m.-7:50 a.m., and lunch will be served from 12:00 p.m.- 12:30 p.m. If your students are interested in taking advantage of food services, please be sure to arrange transportation accordingly.
Regional Summer School Program Fees:
Each student who participates in the Regional Summer School Program, will have a $25 fee applied to their student account. If the student completes at least one course over the summer, the fee will be removed. If no courses are completed, the fee will remain attached to the student's account.
Courses and credits:
Each student can meet with their counselor to establish which courses need to be recovered. There is a 2-course maximum associated with this program. This means that each student has the opportunity to take up to 2 courses and earn up to ten credits through the Regional Summer School Program. All completed courses will be reflected in Infinite Campus and be applied to student's transcript. Students will only receive credit upon course completion. There will be no partial or half credit given for coursework that is not complete.

All you need to do is register your King Soopers loyalty card number or alternate ID (e.g. phone number) to earn money for TJ. After you register for the program, a percentage of ALL of your King Soopers purchases will go to TJ.
Important: At the point of purchase, you must swipe your loyalty card or type in your alternate ID in order for your purchases to count toward TJ's fundraising.

Hosting an Exchange Student

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to host an exchange student? Now is your chance!
Two girls with EF High School Exchange are hoping to find host families in Denver for the 2019-2020 school year so they can make their dream to live in the United States come true. Mariel from Norway is half Thai, half Norwegian. She loves playing soccer, volleyball, running, snowboarding, painting, and drawing. Lara from Germany loves playing the guitar, dancing, cooking, and playing sports. Both girls are outgoing, open-minded and fun-loving. Did you know that involving your child in summer activates is healthy for their overall well-being?
Now that school is out, we want to make sure our students have a summer filled with fun, learning and wellness. Here are a few resources to help our families make the most of summer break:
- Free summer lunches for all kids: DPS is participating in the 2018 Summer Meal Program to offer free breakfast and lunch for all kids 18 and younger at participating schools. Adults may also participate in the program for only $3. Click here to learn more.
- MY Denver Card access pass: Children ages five to 18 can have free access to recreation centers, pools and cultural facilities through the MY Denver Card program. Click here to learn more and to sign up to receive the "key to the city."
- Summer reading resource: All DPS students have 24/7 access to the OverDrive eBook Library online. The library is available anytime, anywhere from any device. Students simply log in and can choose eBooks from a large collection of relevant and engaging reading materials.
- Mi Casa Summer Camp 2018: Mi Casa Resource Center is holding a free six-week summer camp for sixth- through ninth-graders to engage them in sports, leadership, arts and crafts, robotics, reading and more! Summer camp is from 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, June 11-July 20 at Cheltenham Elementary. Breakfast and lunch are provided. To register, fill out this form and return it to a Mi Casa Staff member.
- Free admission days: The Scientific & Cultural Facilities District has partnered with organizations such as the Denver Art Museum, Denver Botanic Gardens, Denver Center for the Performing Arts and more to offer free admission days to students with MY Denver Cards. - Learning Heroes' Summer Stride Program: Parents can keep their kids learning over the summer by utilizing Learning Heroes' three-step plan, which provides tools and resources that prepare kids for the next school year. Click here for more information

As we look ahead to Senior year, we need several parent volunteers to take on the planning and execution of the Senior night camp out before the first day of school for incoming freshman (Aug.19). This is a great TJ Spartan tradition. We would especially love to have some dads help out with this event.

The class of 2022 needs 2-4 additional parents to join parent Julie Rubin in planning fundraising events. The class of 2022 has two faculty sponsors,
Jason Klimczak and Maggie Kennedy, but parents are needed to work with the staff to plan fundraising activities. Parent sponsors also plan community building activities for the parents of the class of 2022. Each class is expected to raise money needed to host their Prom, After Prom and other activities senior year. The sooner the fundraiser get started, the more choices there will be for events senior year. The time commitment can be as little or as much you can share.
Your involvement in any capacity is important and appreciated. We are successful because of your behind-the-scenes contributions, large and small. It all adds up to a stronger community. An engaged parent body shows our students that we care about them!
