Spartan Stop Raffle
Mary Herbert Social Committee members have organized a fun raffle to benefit the Spartan Stop. Tickets are $1 each or 6 tickets for $5. Tickets may be purchased from

Kathy Dreier,
Stephanie Sandoval, or
Erin Krueger. Just fill out the attached raffle sign-up sheet and turn it in with your payment. We will fill out your tickets and place them in the selected container(s). The new deadline to purchase tickets is Thursday, May 3. Winning tickets will be drawn and announced on Friday, May 4.
End of the Year Transportation Requests
When planning your end of the year field trips, please keep the following information in mind.

before picking the day, have a couple of dates in mind

-
turn in trip requests as soon as possible; the calendar is filling up
-
if possible, avoid Tuesday and Thursday due to the large number of athletic events
-
trips that leave after 8 am on M, T, TH, F or 9 am on W, and return by 2:15 pm are easier to accommodate
If you know of children who will be attending kindergarten this fall and they did not attend preschool, please encourage their parents to sign them up for Kindergarten Ramp Up. Kindergarten Ramp Up will be held July 16-20, at Riverside, William Allen White and Walnut. Two sessions will be offered: one session from 10:00 am - 11:45 am and a second session from
12:15 pm - 2:00 pm. To register, contact the student's school of attendance for fall 2018.
It is time to start gathering dates for the 2018-19 activity calendar. If you have dates for next year that need to be added please see your building secretary or email
[email protected]. Deadline to add activities is May 4th.

The board presented a proclamation to USD 253 teachers in recognition of National Teacher Appreciation Week,
May 7 - 11, 2018 and National Teacher Day on May 8, 2018.

Board Study Session
Vicki Schweinler, Executive Director of Elementary Education, facilitated a study session for the Board of Education and those in attendance on how kindergarten readiness influences student success. Attendees were split into small groups for tabletop discussion on:

early learning experiences
available for children of Emporia Public Schools (EPS)

what do parents of EPS want for their children
-
what future opportunities are needed to fill gaps for children birth - 5
-
what is EPS doing next to ensure students are kindergarten ready
As part of the study session, Jodi Case, Mobilizing Literacy Family Liaison, provided the board with updates on the Mobilizing Literacy activities for the year including all of the events attended and number of children, parents and daycares that have been served.
The study session demonstrated the importance of preparing students from birth to age 5 for kindergarten and the role social emotional learning plays in students achieving post-secondary success.
