SEF Announces New Board Members

Lady Gaga Keyboard Player Visits SHS Thanks to SEF Grant
The Summit Education Foundation launched its newly endowed Arthur C. McCann Speaker Series with a visit from Brockett Parsons, keyboard player for Lady Gaga and Summit High School alum.
Parsons spent two days with musicians at Summit High School. Many students across musical disciplines benefitted from his musical expertise. Parsons worked with the Jazz Band, Wind Ensemble, Orchestra, Concert Band, Women's Chorus, Chamber Choir and SHS singers and songwriters.
This endowment was named in honor of retired Summit High School English teacher Arthur McCann. Nicholas Stephens, Summit High School Class of 1972, donated $50,000 to the Summit Educational foundation to establish this ongoing series to recognize his former teacher. Mr. McCann is remembered fondly by Stephens and other students as a dynamic and caring teacher who had lasting impact on them.
The Brockett Parsons grant was written by Summit High School band teacher Alex Bocchino. Each year, through SEF's regular grant process, the Arthur C. McCann Speaker Series Endowment will be used to bring speakers on various academic subjects to students at the Summit Public Schools. A LOT IS GROWING!
The 5
th
grade teachers at Franklin Elementary collaborated with the Reeves Reed Arboretum to start Franklin's first garden. Althea Llewellyn from the Arboretum comes to Franklin weekly to work with the children about how to care for the garden. The garden project began in early April when the 5
th
grade took a field trip to the arboretum to learn about square foot gardening and how to sow seeds in a green house. The students then transferred seedlings from the arboretum green house into the garden. They even got to sow seeds, such as beets & marigolds, directly into the soil. The most exciting part is that everything is thriving! The radishes are currently showing their red shoulders, which elicited yelps of excitement from the students. At the end of the school year the chef from The Summit House will come and help the kids harvest the vegetables and flowers they have grown and make a salad they can all share.
Miss Klaif, a fifth grade teacher, told us that "For the past few weeks and for the rest of the school year, we will work very closely with Arboretum to create lessons aligned with our curriculum and keep our students engaged when we are outside in the garden. A typical day outside in the garden consists of three activities: a read aloud to make a literary connection, an activity to experiment with different seeds and observation/gardening time inside the actual garden. Our students have been LOVING these class periods outside."
