The Department of Cultural Affairs (DCASE), in partnership with the League of Chicago Theatres, has designated 2019 as the Year of Chicago Theatre (YOCT). A key component of the mission of the YOCT is to build inclusivity and expand the geographic scope of Chicago theatre. As part of this work, YOCT will conduct a survey of theatre assets on the south and west sides. Led by artists, YOCT will map cultural 'assets' - documenting the people, organizations, facilities, businesses, and place-based and place-based histories that support and inform the development of theatre on the south and west sides of the city. Individual artists, artist teams and arts organizations are invited to apply to lead these cultural asset mapping projects.

To apply, visit artist.callforentry.org

Congratulations to Definition Theatre on its recent grant of $1.6 million from Mayor Emanuel's Neighborhood Opportunity Fund. This funding will allow Definition, a seven-year-old company that has not yet had full-time staff, to buy and renovate a former Woodlawn church and transform it into a new black-box theater in an area of Chicago underserved by city's longstanding storefront-theater movement. This news is especially significant and exciting given that 2019 is the Year of Chicago Theatre. The Neighborhood Opportunity Fund generates revenue from downtown developments to finance commercial and cultural projects in our neighborhoods lacking private investment - strengthening Chicago's South, Southwest and West Sides. In the past two years, more than $8 million has been awarded to more than 20 organizations in the arts and culture sector. Other 2019 large grants in the creative sector were awarded to Civic Commons-St. Laurence and Bridgewater Studio. Learn more, and watch for future opportunities: neighborhoodopportunityfund.com.
