Spotlight: Community Work Study Employees, Interns, and Johnson Board Fellows

We recognize the amazing contributions of Cornell work study Community Impact Associates Jordan Black (pictured above left) and Dawna Badie (pictured above right) with Chief Impact Officer Janet Cotraccia. They provided outstanding professional support of our grant making  and grant application review processes and online tools. Both are moving on to exciting next steps in their academic careers so we will be looking for new Cornell students for these positions over the next few months.

The Johnson Board Fellows program of Cornell's SC Johnson College of Business is a totally student run leadership program. We salute the contributions of this year Community Foundation fellows: Ben Kalter and Vinithra Raveendran. The program provides an experiential experience for Johnson MBAs through service on non-profit Boards of Directors. As non-voting, volunteer Board and Committee members, MBAs develop the knowledge and skills necessary for successful Board service as future business leaders. Board Fellows play a critical role in strengthening the ties between Johnson and the greater Ithaca area by contributing to the health of a vibrant local non-profit community

Congratulating our newest Grantees in Aging, Animal Welfare, Environmental Preservation, Women and Youth Services: more than 50 grants to 37 organizations totaling $136,697!

The Spring Grant Cycle was formed around the priorities of the Helen Thomas Howland Foundation, held in trust at M&T Bank. Trustees endeavor to select as charitable recipients organizations similar in nature to those in which Helen Thomas Howland was interested in during her lifetime that provide services for the elderly, children, environmental preservation and animal care/educational organizations. In 2019 we newly included our Women's Fund in this cycle.

Many sources of support created the total grant budget including: $48,500 from the Howland Foundation and a total of $88,197  from Community Foundation comprised of $27,375 from our Tompkins Today & Tomorrow Fund, $35,326  from different donor advised funds, $5,093 from our Women's Fund and $5,500 from our Children & Youth Fund. We also raised $14,903 from designated gifts.

New Online Resources

Two new recent resources are now available online. Your Community Foundation scans the local environment for information to strengthen our work and to support donors and mission driven organizations. Both of these resources can assist us and you in improving the quality of life in Tompkins County.

We encourage you to take a look into the following websites:

Live in Ithaca, created by the Tompkins Chamber, is a product of years of economic, community, and workforce development collaboration between the Chamber, private employers, government, and not-for-profit foundation support. Ithaca & Tompkins County are blessed with a thriving regional economy, deeply committed local employers, and a remarkable quality of life. The Live in Ithaca project is designed to reflect our corner of the world in an honest and inspiring light - through this website, a destination marketing campaign, and the Live in Ithaca magazine & relocation guide.

Collective Impact in Tompkins County, began with the  Building Bridges Initiative  in late 2011, which defined a vision for a  "A socially just and ecologically sound, sustainable local economy in the Tompkins County Region."  The Collective Impact approach is one part of achieving this goal. This new website was built to support Collective Impact work in Tompkins County. It includes a community calendar, a needs/resources/opportunities public listing page, links to data sources, and information and updates on the five CI initiatives.
