"We should assist the poor in every way and do it both by ourselves and by enlisting the help of others.. to do this is to preach the gospel by word and by work."

Gospel Reading: (Matthew 22:34-40)
When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, and one of them, a scholar of the law, tested him by asking, “Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest? He said to him, “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.”
Vincentian Reflection:
The love of God is central to our lives: love with all one’s heart, soul, and mind. If the second commandment to love neighbor as self is like the first, then we might surmise that we must love our neighbor in the same way as we love God. Loving God isn’t merely a matter of fervor in our hearts; it is expressed in doing good for the sake of others.
(Living Liturgy, p.260)
As you pray the words of Vincent, picture instances when you did love God in actions of charity and justice. Recall two sincere attempts that you made to be helpful to someone, one of which worked and the other which did not. Share on any differences between the two acts of charity.

Take a Bite Out of Hunger
|
|
The students at Holy Family Catholic School donated thousands of canned goods to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul's Food Pantry. The students conducted a food drive last week as part of their school wide service project called "Take a Bite Out of Hunger". The event concluded on Friday, October 16, 2020 on World Hunger Awareness Day.
According to Sean Warfield, the Social Justice teacher, the 8th grade Catholic Social Teaching Class organized the service project. They gathered and counted the number of canned goods collected by the students. On Friday, they loaded the St. Vincent de Paul truck with 4,641 canned goods.

The Society is grateful to the students at Holy Family School for their generous donation. Thanks to them, more families will not go hungry.

Introduction for a New Member
|
|
The Introduction for New Member meeting will take place on Saturday, November 14, 2020 from 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the present need to isolate and social distance, it is not possible to hold our regular Ozanam Orientation sessions.
The National Office has provided us with a presentation that can be used for new members until we can all meet together again in Ozanam Orientation. This is an alternative (not a replacement for) Ozanam Orientation.
New Members are still expected to attend Ozanam Orientation whenever in-person meetings resume. Until then, this will satisfy the need for new Conference members to attend Ozanam Orientation before going on home visits.
A registration link will be provided soon.

National Gazette Questions and Answers
Q: We have two Conference members that for the past eight years have not done any personal contact with our friends in need, but they do have a say on how assistance is provided. Is there anything in the Rule that states they have to be involved person-to-person with our friends in need?
A: To be an active member you must be Catholic, attend meetings regularly and participate in the works of the Society, which is helping our neighbors in need. There is nothing in the Rule that says every member has to be involved person-to-person with those we help. For instance, a member who works in a pantry with no face-to-face contact with those served is still an active member by definition, so long as they are doing works of the Society and not just attending meetings.
Preguntas y Respuestas de la
Oficina Nacional
