Staff of the Week: Ms. Saldana!
|
|
Mrs. Vanessa Saldana, 7
th
grade assistant principal at Hogg Middle School, is our Staff of the Week because she exhibits the IB Learner trait of PRINCIPLED! Mrs. Saldana was recently named as the new principal at Hogg for the incoming school year! This is her 10
th
year in education. She began her career as a math teacher. Mrs. Saldana is married and has 2 beautiful daughters.
Mrs. Saldana graduated from Lamar High School and attended University of Houston where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree. She continued her education at St. Thomas University where she obtained her master’s degree. Her goal is to further her education and enroll in a doctoral program.
Mrs. Saldana believes she was chosen as PRINCIPLED because she has always had a strong sense of fairness and high expectations for students and staff at Hogg Middle. She is proud to say she is “rule-bound”. She believes every student is different in trying to achieve something.
Mrs. Saldana has been at Hogg Middle for 4 years. She states she loves that Hogg is IB and it allows people to look at the whole child academically. The variety of clubs enables students to express themselves and feel passionate about their school. One of her many goals as the new principal are to continue the great success Hogg has had in the past 4 years. She would also like to expand the selection of clubs plus add a mariachi band. One of the goals that top her list is to make Hogg Middle the best middle school in HISD!
Her hobbies include spending time with her “big” family during the weekends. She enjoys taking her girls to the park and she is an avid Astros, Texans and Rockets fan. But she is her daughter’s #1 fan on the baseball field (T-Ball)! Mrs. Saldana is inspired by her daughters. Everything she does is to help her children grow as individuals.
[P.S. You can meet Ms. Saldana Tuesday, May 21st, at 6:00 PM in the Auuditorium.]

Student of the Week: Axel Molina!
|
|
Axel Molina, 8
th
grader at Hogg Middle School, is our student of the week because he exhibits the IB Learner trait of RISK-TAKER! Axel is originally from Nicaragua. He, along with his two sisters, one brother and parents recently moved to Houston after enduring hardships in his native country. Axel was interviewed by Univision journalist, Jorge Ramos, who covered his story on his experiences while crossing the border. Axel credits a group of Catholic priests who helped his family obtain Visas for the entire family who was seeking a better life in America.
Axel states he is inspired by his mother who struggled and fought for independence for the entire family. He is very proud of her and his family for persevering even in the face of adversity. Axel would like to continue his education at Heights High School and eventually study culinary arts in college. He loves to cook and become a “chef gastronomia”.
Axel loved to play soccer with his friends who stayed behind in Nicaragua. He has high hopes that he can develop friendships here in the U.S. and continue playing soccer in the streets like he used to.
