Christian Faith Formation News

Wow!  Only two more weeks of regular Sunday School for this year! The program year ends on May 19 for all classes.
However! The Adult I Bible Study will continue throughout the summer; they welcome summer attendees.
AND there will be an 8-week, session-by-session class called Confirmation for Adults, beginning June 9 and running through the end of July. The class will be taught by some of our current confirmation teachers: Emmie Brown, Medora Hix, and Robert Rackley. (This is in response to frequently heard comments from mentors and parents, including: 'I didn't know that!' or 'I wish I had learned that,' or 'you should offer this to adults!' Come once, come thrice, or come for all. Classes will be at 9:00 a.m.)

Adult Classes in Sunday School
Bible and Beyond:  T he class continues a study on the life of John Knox, the Scottish minister and theologian who founded the Presbyterian Church of Scotland, based upon the 2015 documentary Knox: The Life and Legacy of Scotland's Controversial Reformer. Led by Lisa and Alan Ward, Library.
Faith Today :  Come and discover that  The Answer to Bad Religion is Not No Religion: a Guide to Good Religion for Seekers, Skeptics, and Believers by Martin Theilen, author of What's the Least You Can Believe and Still Be a Christian? Led by Hunter Piermont.
Faith and Families: Convened by Alan Bancroft - rotating leadership. Fellowship Hall
Adult I : Discipleship and Mission including the call to discipleship, the call to ministry, and the spread of the Gospel. Parlor.

Pilgrimage is Coming!
Don't forget to save these dates: July 14 - 18, Sunday - Thursday evenings from 6:00 to 8:15 for the all-generation summer Christian Faith Formation event; Pilgrimage!

Registration is now open! Register in the Narthex on Sunday or through Sign Up Genius.

Participants will be organized into Guilds to learn about Simon Peter in Rome, Italy; Thomas Becket, Canterbury, England; James the Greater, Santiago de Compostela, Spain; Margaret of Dunfermline, Scotland; and Patrick of Croagh Patrick, Ireland. Each evening we will visit the Street Fair of the place, doing bookbinding, woodworking, needlework, painting, and more - all based on seeking the Kingdom of God. There will be a special Adult Guild to more thoroughly learn about pilgrimage in the Christian faith.

Wall of Mission - Last day is this coming Sunday!
It's time to give to our Guatemala ministry! The Wall of Mission is back with envelopes of various amounts just waiting to receive your gifts. The last day to participate is this coming Sunday, May 12.

Here's what will happen with your donation:
  • At the Monte Sinai church: complete the Computer Center, including wi-fi for the church and staff there for maintenance
  • Expand the Agricultural Project (Phase 2, or perhaps offer another Phase 1)
  • Deacon and Session training to help the church
  • Create a small library for church and community
  • Continue to maintain or expand the scholarship program. For 2019, there are 23 students on scholarship in both middle school and high school (academic or vocational), including one university student. A second current student has just been enrolled in university.
WHAT TO DO:
  • Take an envelope from the board. These range from $1 - $1000 though most are less than $100. Then put a check or cash into the envelope. Checks payable to Cary Presbyterian Church, "Guatemala" on the memo line. For cash receipts, please write your name and address on a notepad and put this inside of the envelope flap and we will send you a receipt.
  • Re-post with the "Thank You" side out.
We have room for one more person
to go to Guatemala July 31 - August 6.
We will continue to investigate the water situation, supply the elementary school with more supplies and work toward getting a literacy program in there, visit a community library, check in with the scholarship students, and hold a women's economic empowerment meeting.  Contact Medora Hix by emailing her at the following link, medora.hix@carypresbyterian.org for more information.

News from Summer Program (formerly FFF)
The former FFF program, providing meals, teaching, recreation, and community building to our Hispanic neighbors is now the Summer Program!  That's the name our neighbors requested.

Sign-ups for the Neighborhood Summer Program with our Hispanic neighbors are ready! CPC participates on Wednesdays: June 19 to August 14, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Here is the SignUpGenius link.

As the program gets closer, so does MANDATORY training.
  • THIS COMING Wednesday, May 15 here at CPC at 6:30 pm;
  • Make-up training Sunday, June 16 at Kirk of Kildaire Presbyterian at 12:15.
  • Please note: Other training dates are currently TBA.
The Summer Program provides meals, teaching, recreation, and community building. We need volunteer help as:
  • Bus Drivers! Morning shift from 9:00 to around 10:00, and from 12:15 p.m. to around 1:00 p.m.
  • Group guides for elementary grades. We need a total of 6 to 8 people, with 1 or 2 for preschoolers.
  • Station leaders for Reading, Recreation, and Crafts, and their helpers
  • A volunteer check-in person (One regular, reliable person is best. Two people are great for complete coverage). These folks should be self-starters and adaptable!
  • Kitchen help for cooking and serving
  • Sewing people for Moms group (see below)
Sewing Classes: Sewing Machines and Helpers Needed
CPC will offer sewing classes to the moms. Do you have a working sewing machine to donate? We'd like to provide each interested mom with a machine to have after the program.  Do you sew?  We need several people with sewing experience to help this year on Wednesdays, from 10:00 a.m. to noon.

Memorials & Endowment Committee
Announces 2019 Grant Cycle
Application Deadline is June 17, 2019

Is there a mission or faith-based activity you are passionate about, but it is not yet sponsored through the CPC budget? If so, a grant awarded by the Memorials & Endowment Team is a great way to obtain capital needed to foster such a project.

The purpose of an M&E grant is to provide resources to support
faith-based initiatives. These initiatives must align with the overall purpose of the Endowment Fund, which is to provide opportunities for members
to support the benevolent, educational, and mission work of the whole church. The grants are short term, non-recurring gifts and are not intended to replace existing budgets or support ongoing projects.
Any CPC member may apply.

Not sure if a certain initiative falls within the parameters of the grant guidelines? Please review the guidelines at this link:  https://tinyurl.com/y2smo33v or contact one of the committee members with this or any other questions regarding the application process.

The application deadline is Monday June 17 and approved grants will be announced by August 1, with funds disbursed by September 15 or as needed thereafter. Grant applications as well as policy guidelines are located in the church office and online at this link:  https://tinyurl.com/y2smo33v  .

The M&E Team looks forward to reviewing your grant,
Donna Adkins, Barbara Carew, Barbara Nelson and Brian Short, Elizabeth Guthrie, Tim Goettel, Jim Tompkins and Scott Peoples.

This book presents many interesting ideas concerning ways that our Christian community can be more inclusive.

While not in the Wake County Public Library, the book is available through inter library loan, and is quite inexpensive through Amazon.  As always, club attendees are willing to share.  If you are interested in joining us to discuss this book, please contact Peg Giesbrecht at 919-859-3951 or Ellen Cline at 919-469-1456.

NEW: Opening Doors with
the New Keypad Locks
There have been some reports of trouble opening doors using the new keypads.

Reading and following the directions below should help.

1)  Enter your 4 digit key code by pressing the buttons on the keypad. (If you have not signed for a key code yet, you can do that any time the office is open.)
2) When your code is entered correctly, a green light will flash. This does not open the door. It signals that the door is ready to open.
3) When the green light flashes, turn the small round knob (located below the keypad) to the right until it stops
4) When the knob stops turning, use the knob to pull the door open. There are indentations on the knob so the door can easily be pulled open.

A REMINDER: DOORS SHOULD NOT BE PROPPED OPEN AT ANY TIME

BE KNOWN! Wear your name tag!

Need a name tag?  Need a new name tag?
You can do one of these things:
  • Write "Need a name tag" next to your name in the Welcome Book
  • OR sign up for a name tag at the table by the TV in the Narthex. As soon as yours is ready it will be on that same table.
Keep it where most convenient on one of the name tag racks.
THANKS!

PC(USA) member decline  has slowed
New Worshipping Communities  on the rise

"While the difference is not great, we are encouraged by the slowing trend downward," said the Rev. Dr. J. Herbert Nelson, II, Stated Clerk of the General Assembly of the PC(USA). "The church of the 21st century is changing and we still believe God is preparing us for great things in the future."
Nelson is encouraged by statistics showing a significant increase in professions of faith and reaffirmations last year. In 2017, the total number was over 12,900 compared to more than 22,000 this year. Read more here
