Dedicated to Fathers

Whether or not your father is no longer here,
he is and always will be your father.
Whether or not your child is no longer here,
you are and always will be his/her father.

When someone you love dies,
your love does not die with them; rather, it
continues to grow stronger and stronger,
just as it would  if your loved one were here.
Love holds no limitations of space or time.

Story of Father's Day

S onora Dodd of Washington first had the idea of a "father's day." She thought of the idea for Father's Day while listening to a Mother's Day sermon in 1909.

S onora wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart. Smart, who was a Civil War veteran, was widowed when his wife died while giving birth to their sixth child. Mr. Smart was left to raise the newborn and his other five children by himself on a rural farm in eastern Washington state.

A fter Sonora became an adult, she realized the selflessness her father had shown in raising his children as a single parent. It was her father that made all the parental sacrifices and was, in the eyes of his daughter, a courageous, selfless, and loving man. Sonora's father was born in June, so she chose to hold the first Father's Day celebration in Spokane, Washington on the 19th of June, 1910.

In 1924, P resident Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national Father's Day, so in 1966, President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as Father's Day. President Richard Nixon signed the law making it permanent in 1972.

Honoring Dads

At one point in time, to any one member of a family, the mosaic can seem to be perfectly joined. In reality, the tapestry is always changing slowly--new members enter the picture and others depart. Each new entry is a source of happiness; each departure a source of grief. The loss of a child, a parent, or a grandparent may seem to be an event that destroys the family. But the family remains one and eternal, providing joy and solace to those who have witnessed - and suffered - its changes.

So, today, we honor you,
the fathers whose children are not here,
and the fathers who are no longer
here with their children,
and shower you with proclamations of love
you so deserve.
We hope the memories you hold
near and dear
will see you through
this Father's Day.
