Please ask your State Senator to support HB2665, the Youth PrEP Bill which clarifies that medical treatment designed to prevent HIV can be prescribed for adolescents weighing at least 77 pounds without necessarily seeking parent/guardian consent first. The bill is on 3rd reading.
WHY IT MATTERS:
Illinois wants to achieve its goal to end the HIV epidemic in the state by 2030. In order to achieve this goal we must transition our system to one that more effectively helps youth live free of HIV.
WHERE WE STAND:
The LWVIL position that covers this bill is, the LWVUS position for children at risk: "LWVUS believes that early intervention and prevention measures are effective in helping children reach their full potential. The League supports policies and programs of the community and government that promote well being, encourage the full development and ensure the safety of all children."
SECOND ACTION NEEDED:
While you are on the phone, ask your senator -and then contact your representative-to support and join current efforts of a bipartisan group of legislators working to solve problems with Medicaid eligibility and re-determination in this legislative session. This is not currently a viable bill, but it could be with their support.
WHY IT MATTERS:
One in every 4 Illinoisans relies on Medicaid for their health care.
Those applying for Medicaid routinely have to wait months to find out if they have been approved, delaying access to medication and treatment. Up to half of those on Medicaid lose coverage each year, despite still being eligible, due to procedural issues like lost mail and system glitches. The system needs to be simpler, more responsive, more transparent and accountable.
The League of Women Voters believes in promoting a health care system for the United States that provides access to a basic level of quality care for all U.S. residents and controls health care costs
