  • For those 60 or older or those with a disability, the Aging and Disability Resource Center can help with long term care planning, application assistance, medical resources, food assistance, caregiver support, and much more.

Meet Our Volunteer
Meet our volunteer, Judy. She’s been volunteering with our State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) team for over 10 years, providing one-on-one counseling in Dayton and Silver Springs. SHIP is a state-based program that offers local one-on-one counseling and assistance to people with Medicare and their families .

“SHIP has given me great satisfaction because I enjoy helping people solve problems,” said Judy. “All of our members can tell you of the big successes and a few failures we have had getting help for our clients. The successes are what make us go on. We also have a great support system in Access to Healthcare Network. I think SHIP has been a wonderful volunteer opportunity for me.”

If you would like to volunteer, please contact Volunteer Coordinator ehenslee@accesstohealthcare.org or call 775-284-1896 ext. 307 for more information.
AHN Places in "Best Places to Work" Awards
We are excited to announce AHN placed second as a “Best Place to Work" by Northern Nevada Human Resources Association.

We are very proud of the positive working culture we foster. Shout out to our amazing team, for they’re the reason we’re so great!

Meet Our Board - CJ Bawden
CJ Bawden has been serving on the AHN Board of Directors for the past 4 years and was drawn to AHN because we take on tough subjects that affect the health of members in our community at a grassroots level. “It is refreshing to see a not for profit organization that is actively looking for new and innovative ways to inject themselves and new programs to increase the overall livability of Nevada,” said Bawden. “When many other organizations stop and say that something is too hard, has no funding attached to it, or isn’t the popular thing to do, AHN steps in and comes up with a solution.”

As a board member, Bawden enjoys helping staff with guidelines and seeing them turn ideas into health outcomes for AHN’s clients. Since 2014, Bawden has been working with the Medicare Advantage and Individual and Family arm of Hometown Health and is a proud Nevada native.
AHN was recently awarded a generous $2,500 grant to the Church of Latter Day Saints Bishop’s Storehouse in Reno, Nevada. Created to help those in need, The Bishop’s Storehouse offers fresh fruits, vegetables, canned goods, meats, dairy, toiletries, cleaning supplies and other commodities. All of the goods in the bishops’ storehouse are paid for using Church members’ tithes, fast offerings, and other generous donations. In addition to monetary contributions, Church members volunteer their time to produce and process the food.

Reduce Your Risk for Type 2 Diabetes
Beginning in June 2019, AHN will offer free Diabetes Prevention Program workshops to members of the Reno community. First developed by the CDC, this program is proven to prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes in individuals with prediabetes. Under the guidance of trained lifestyle coaches, participants learn the skills needed to lose weight, become more physically active, manage stress, and sustain healthy lifestyle habits.

Major Pharmacy Chain To Stop Selling e-Cigarettes and Vaping Products
Rite Aid, one of the country's biggest pharmacy chains, will stop selling e-cigarettes and vaping products because of concern that they are fueling tobacco use among middle and high school students across the United States. Rite Aid said it would remove the products from its more than 2,400 stores over the next 90 days. The chain will continue to sell regular tobacco products, a decision that some public health advocates criticized.
Amazon's Alexa Wants to Help Manage Your Health; Will Info Stay Safe?
Amazon announced that the Alexa smart speaker can help manage your health, including scheduling urgent-care appointments, monitoring blood sugar levels, tracking when your prescriptions have shipped, and checking health insurance benefits. Five companies so far have joined this initiative including Cigna Corp., Express Scripts, Livongo, and major hospital systems. While the company says Alexa meets all health privacy requirements under federal law, the announcement comes as it has been reported that the company employs thousands of full-time workers and contractors in several countries, including the United States, Costa Rica and Romania, to listen to what customers say to Alexa.
