Get the inside scoop from
Vermont Standard
President and CEO, Phil Camp Sr., on how the well-read Woodstock area weekly is coping in a regional and national sea of publication woes.
On
Saturday, May 18, at 2 p.m.
, join the audience at the Norman Williams Public Library for a lively 90-minute panel featuring Mr. Camp in the third of three presentations on
“Vermont Journalism in Turbulent Times.”
You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions on changes being made at the Standard as it takes on digital-era challenges after surviving 165 years of publishing during cultural and economic changes, floods and fires. Mr. Camp has owned the paper since 1980. It was named top weekly in New England in four of the last six years.
Originally founded as an anti-alcohol publication (“The Vermont Temperance Standard”), it ultimately transitioned to become the paper of record for the Woodstock region, serving ten towns. It has published each and every week through its long history. Can it withstand the turbulence of modern times?
The “Turbulent Times” series, sponsored by
The Learning Lab
, addresses the issue: How are Vermont journalists dealing with this fast-paced age of internet and social media communications, 24/7 news coverage, a polarized and fragmented public, “fake news” and financial pressures on traditional media?
The panel includes four retired journalists from Woodstock: Robert Hager (NBC News), who will moderate the panel with Mr. Camp; John Mathews (Washington Star, NBC News); Sandy Gilmour (NBC, CBS News); and Karen Gilmour (St. Louis Post-Dispatch, CBS Morning News).
VTDigger founder Anne Galloway spoke on May 4, and Maggie Cassidy, editor of the Valley News, was featured Saturday May 11.
