City Code Reminders
Here are two helpful reminders about City Code regulations for grass and solicitation. For any questions, or to contact the City's Code Enforcement Division, please visit www.collegeparkmd.gov/dps .

Grass
  • With spring showers comes grass... and lots of it! Make sure to keep grass and weeds trimmed no higher than 12 inches. Ornamental grasses are exempt from this regulation.

Door-to-Door Solicitation
  • Door to door solicitors in the City are required to have and display (upon request) County and City permits. They also should have photo identification.
  • Remember, you don't have to open your door to any stranger. There are both legitimate and scam solicitors.
  • Report any suspicious people or activities immediately to 9-1-1.
A WEEK IN REVIEW
Department of Public Works
The Department conducted its yearly Storm Water Pollution Prevention Training for all employees on May 9. The training focused on Best Management Practices (BMPs) for spills, proper fueling of vehicles, storage of materials and other practices to minimize any storm water pollution concerns.

The Department coordinated with the University to have the storm water swale behind 50th Place and Roanoke Place cleaned of debris and cut back. The University will be removing several dead trees from the swale area in the near future.

Two fiberglass picnic table umbrellas were installed at Duvall Field.

The damaged portion of the metal pedestrian retaining fence at Knox Road and Baltimore Avenue has been repaired.

MDA Mosquito Control Control Program
  • The City cooperates with the Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) to identify and control mosquito populations. The program consists of:
  • Larviciding standing water; treatments are made by MDA personnel to known areas of standing water to control mosquito larva preventing their development into adult mosquitoes. MDA does this every 4-6 weeks.
  • Spraying to control adult mosquitoes begins May 29, 2019 and goes through early September. Spraying for adult mosquitoes may occur in College Park (weather permitting) after dusk on Wednesday evenings by truck mounted ultra-low volume sprayers. MDA does not spray individual properties; they treat neighborhoods that meet certain thresholds.
  • Prince George’s County Health Department reminds residents to follow the three D’s to keep mosquitoes away:
  • Drain: Standing water attracts mosquitoes. Empty out any outside water containers near your home at least once per week
  • Dress: Dark clothing attracts mosquitoes. Wear long sleeves, long pants, and light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
  • Defend: Properly apply an EPA-registered repellent such as DEET, picaridin, IR 3535, or oil of lemon-eucalyptus. For permanent areas of standing water (ponds, rain barrels, etc), contact the City's Department of Public Works for a mosquito torpedo which releases an insect growth regulator in water that prevents adult mosquito development.
  • To report areas of heavy mosquito populations, go to the following link and provide your information http://www.doit.state.md.us/selectsurvey/TakeSurvey.aspx?SurveyID=740Kl54#
  • Request for Exemption from Adult Mosquito Control Services:
  • Any resident who wishes to have his/her property excluded from adult mosquito control pesticide applications by truck-mounted ultra-low volume (ULV) sprayers must fill out this form annually. Click here for application.
  • For more information, please visit www.collegeparkmd.gov/pets#mosquitoes.

  • Right-of-Way Tree Planting: If you would like a tree planted in the right-of way in front of your home, please contact Brenda Alexander to discuss options at 240-487-3595 or balexander@collegeparkmd.gov.
