A Message from Our Pastor
On August 1, I will celebrate twenty five years of ordained ministry in the ELCA. Twenty-five years ago I knew that God was calling me to ministry, but I was not at all sure exactly where this call to ordained ministry would lead me and my family. My seminary education had been in Philadelphia, PA. in a large diverse urban setting, while my internship was served in a rural community in the Pocono Mountains.

My experience before seminary and coming out of seminary prepared me to serve either in a city/urban ministry or in parks/recreation ministry. When I searched my heart further, God seemed to be leading me to ministry in an urban/city setting in a multicultural context. My first call fit that description. It was a small congregation in the Atlanta metro area and had few resources, but it was a growing urban area. The congregation was small, older and in danger of closing. We had a choice to make; we could embrace diversity and grow, or we could close the doors. The neighborhood around the church and in south DeKalb County was African American and Caribbean. The congregation made a renewed commitment to ministry, and we set out to serve our community. We added a Caribbean Festival, a Saturday night Hip Hop Service, and a community nursery for children with HIV/AIDS. As God led, we grew in faith, diversity and love. Today some of the children I baptized twenty five years ago are leaders in that congregation and the ELCA.

After twenty five years of ministry I have grown older, but I am still invigorated by God's people united in faith. We have a wonderful congregation at St. Luke. We are blessed with abundant resources and we partner with some thirty ministries in Shelby County and beyond. This summer the YMCA camp is drawing children from our community, Vacation Bible School is planned and ready, and our youth will travel to North Carolina and Houston, TX.

As God's arms are open wide to all, we are invited to open St Luke's doors to all. We are called to be a living sign of God's diverse community of faith. I am blessed to be serving at St. Luke. I know God has placed us in this time to do God's work and to be God's hands. Let us all commit to a deeper walk with God. Let us share the Good News that God is active and leading St. Luke in ministry.

Together let us Seek God, Serve Others and Share Life!

Worship Ministry

Hello Saints!
How do you like our new look for the summer?  The sanctuary has been rearranged in a round configuration.   We hope you find it to be warm and welcoming. There is also a very special addition to the worship space...our Pray Ground!  Many thanks to Jennifer Wright for all her hard work to make a special place in the sanctuary for our smaller Saints and their parents. Smiles were observed by young and old alike as we watched happy children enjoying their pray ground, playing with the quiet toys and being present in a Christ loving church.   It is our hope to make St. Luke a place where all people feel the love of Christ and the grace of others. Let's continue the momentum!

If you have not heard the good news, our new music director
will officially begin work on August 12.   We are very happy to have Jacob Allen join the Saint Luke family. We do have opportunities for our vastly talented
St.Luke musicians to offer their gifts this summer.
There are spots available in June and July for special preludes and offerings.
Please email Pat Conway at [email protected], or text or call at (901)490-3969.
Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Peace and blessings from the worship team !

Look what's new at St. Luke!!  A  Pray Ground!

We have a new area in the back left corner of the sanctuary for parents to join their young kids to play and still participate in worship.

This space  is designed for parents to sit with their children (ages 4 and under and/or older children with developmental delays) and quietly engage in age-appropriate activities, while experiencing worship.  Soft, quiet toys are provided to help keep our little ones occupied.
Dedication of this area will take place at the morning worship service on June 24th.
In the back of each Chew in the sanctuary is a guide labeled  Children at St. Luke. We have lots of options for your kids.  We've also included ways for our congregation to engage with these families!
At St. Luke Lutheran Church, as Jesus did, we welcome children of all ages as integral members of the body of Christ, and we welcome the sounds and activity that accompany them! There are a number of spaces and activities designed for children to experience and participate in worship according to their needs. We trust families to work out the best option(s) for them and their child(ren) on any given day.

A Message From Our Council President
Greetings St. Luke Saints,
Summer is definitely upon us in Memphis. St. Luke had a great beginning of summer celebration with our annual picnic under the pavilion. As always, the food was awesome and the fellowship even better. Many thanks to all of the Saints who participated.
With summer comes Vacation Bible School in July. This year's program is Shipwrecked, Rescued by Jesus. VBS was a highlight of summer when our kids were little and I hope that all the young Saints are able to participate in the fun while feeling the love of our Savior come alive. I am sure that Jennifer Wright also has plenty of openings for older kids and adults to volunteer so please prayerfully consider how you can assist in this wonderful program.
For many of us summer is a less busy, more relaxed time. But not for St. Luke! This year we will once again host the YMCA summer camp. This ministry continues St. Luke's long history of outreach to our surrounding community, using the facility that God built to show His love to our neighbors.
Family Promise will once again be at St. Luke in July. This is an opportunity to be part of the solution to ending homelessness in our city. Please prayerfully consider how you can step up and help our families experience Christ's love. There are many jobs, all equally important, to make our families feel at home.
In Christian Love,
Jim Allay

" The Best 50 Hours of Training You'll Ever Experience!"

St. Luke has a need for more Stephen Ministers.   You are asked to think about it. Pray about it. Is God calling you to this ministry? Stephen Ministry is a caring ministry. Loving others in Jesus' name is a challenge and an opportunity for all God's children. Likewise, the joy of helping others is the privilege of all Christians, for the Holy Spirit has given gifts to each Christian to use in service to others and to build up the church (1 Corinthians 12:7-11). Stephen Ministry will rely on the gifts the Holy Spirit has given to our lay members so that, as more people are equipped to care, Christ's love for us will be able to go out from us in ever greater and more effective ways.
The training is extensive;  a 50 hour commitment...but...
Here's what  Stephen Ministers frequently say that about their training:
  • Stephen Minister training teaches principles and skills that equip you to provide high-quality, Christ-centered emotional and spiritual care to others. You gain insight into the thoughts, feelings, and actions of people who are hurting.
  • You develop relational and caring skills you can apply to all aspects of your life.
  • You deepen your faith as the Holy Spirit fashions you into a Christ-centered caregiver.
  • You feel a special bond with those in your class-experiencing real Christian community.
  • and Stephen Minister training is a lot of fun!
YES it is a big commitment, but the rewards are even greater!!
You may be the one God is calling to this ministry!  Blessed to be a blessing!
You are in our prayers. Classes start September 8

T-2 Ministry
When the St. Luke Saints come marching in...
We bring energy, heart, and the Holy Spirit into everything we do. Our church is, arguably, the most mission-oriented entity in Shelby County.  When you think of all the outreach we provide: building homes (not houses, homes!), feeding the homeless, providing staples to low-income folks, sponsoring an angel tree at Christmas, knitting 400 hats for children at St. Jude, creating Thanksgiving baskets in the Fall, providing a warm, welcoming, safe place for organizations around us (a sorority, a quilt group, a neighborhood, AA) to meet so that they, in turn, can plan and provide their services to the community.
Pastor Cliff makes hospital visits and shares time with those who are unable to make it to church. The list just goes on and on!

We have an impact on those within our county borders and beyond. The work that has been done in Jamaica has made lives better, lives that are precious and deserving of the basic needs that God wants all his children to have. Long after we are gone, our footprints will provide a path for future saints to follow. Unlike declining churches, we are mission-oriented, but what we now need to do is share with others those things that we're doing, so they can catch the energy and enthusiasm found here.

This is where each of you comes in.  I know there are lots of ideas percolating in our congregation and it's time to prepare the brew.  Chris Carkeet says the first thing people do when they look for a church home is to go onto social media, namely Facebook and websites.  Chris is our media guru and needs pictures, LOTS of pictures, of what's going on at St. Luke. If you are knitting at church, teaching Sunday school, taking our youth skating, cooking for More Than A Meal, or any other mission, take pictures and email them to Chris.  I would suggest you stand pretty far away from any events that involve our youth, so the picture conveys the activity, not the identity of the children. (It's a "safe church" thing.) If our social media is a living, evolving means of communication, people will keep checking in and we really want unchurched folks and relocating families to be aware of all that goes on here.

We also have become a place that welcomes special needs for special people, whether it be a wheelchair, extra oomph for the hearing impaired, and those needing service dogs!  We go out of our way to make them feel comfortable in our church. The only thing that doesn't change is change, so let's just embrace it with joy and grace.

I'd like to get your juices flowing with some ideas that I'll just throw out.

Why can't we use our front lawn more?   We recently had a health fair at church and the parking lot was chuck-a-block with cars.  How many people driving by saw all those cars? Zero. When people are driving by, wouldn't it be great if they wondered what we're doing and read our super sign and be tempted to check us out?  We could do lots of things out there:

** A Bluegrass service in early summer - everyone bring a lawn chair (isn't that why they're called LAWN chairs?!) and we'll provide the paper fans and lots of ice water.

** Ok, how about we start our Palm Sunday service next year out front, where we can actually hear the organ and wave those palms while we file in through the door near the altar.  The problem right now is that entrance is a bit cramped (Hey. If Noah could squeeze those two elephants through the door of the ark, we can surely fit our saints through the altar door!).  If we adjust the praise choir equipment to line up with the sacristy wall, we'd gain about a foot of free space. Anyone want to donate French doors?

** Do you have a pet?  Great. Let's have a pet blessing in late Fall out front and invite all the neighbors in the adjacent neighborhood to come.  Better yet, let's also invite the churches around us to come, as well. Think big! If you watch local ABC news, they have a segment called "Local Good News." I'll volunteer to invite Richard Ransom with his pet giraffe to cover it and the camera man with his pet iguana to film it.

** I think Pastor Cliff would go for a crawfish boil out front and/or we could bring back our outdoor breakfast.

Listen, I know we have that great pavilion and there are lots of things we can do there.  Let's get the folks to church and make use of the "Back 40." You all are an untapped resource for great ideas;  now's the time to get the dialogue going, create a plan, and just do it!

Contact any of us and let's get started.  Pastor Cliff ( [email protected]) or Paul Wright ( [email protected]) or Sue Malone ( [email protected])

Shelby Cares - Safety Task Force

Pastor Cliff, Ed Cooley, and Sue Malone attended the "Shelby Cares" luncheon on May 24th  at the emergency management offices.  It was very informative and showed how organized the disaster relief program is.  This task force reacts in case of major disasters, such as hurricanes, earthquakes, flooding, etc. and for smaller ones, such as house fires, etc.  The program is already in place and it will be very easy for us to become part of the relief program. Churches are needed for housing and cots, as well as portable bathrooms are readily available for use.  We would house local folks, and if there is a large need, we would also house folks from other states. Food is provided by the Red Cross and the state health department, so we don't all need to "do it all."  This is exciting for us and certainly a way for us to share in God's will, through the Holy Spirit. If you would like to become involved in any way, please contact any member of our task force: Tim Flohr, Ken Westphal, Burk Renner, Ed Cooley, or Sue Malone

Women and Justice
In 2009, the Churchwide Assembly authorized the development of a social statement on women and justice. The ELCA Task Force on Women and Justice: One in Christ has been at work since 2012 and brought the work to a crucial stage: On November 15, 2017 it released the Draft of a Social Statement on Women and Justice. The comment period on the Draft is open until  September 30, 2018 .
The Draft, along with an FAQ, overview, brochure and information about how to participate in the comment period can be found here .
Are you are interested in reading and offering feed back on the statement as a group at St Luke? Roberta Renner is available to set up a time for discussion.

St. Luke Saints and the Shelby County TN Alumnae Chapter Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. celebrate their collaboration.

Did you know that the St. Luke Food Pantry is supported by the Shelby County (TN) Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated ? Who are these champions of service?  Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated was founded by twenty-two Howard University college women in 1913. The local Shelby County (TN) chapter of the organization, chartered in 2009 has shown this same dedication to St. Luke through monthly food supply donations to keep our pantry afloat when they meet monthly at the church. They are also sponsored of the Health Expo that was held at St. Luke on April 14, 2018 and serve the Shelby County area in many capacities, most importantly, through public service and social action.

 More than a Meal ...

many of the guests live.

St. Luke Saints led by Dave and Susie Carlson are responsible for the afternoon meal at Grace St. Luke Episcopal Church the third Sundays in  April, May, August,
October, December this year.

We want to thank the congregation for the beautiful flowers sent in memory of my mom. They were just beautiful; she would have loved them. Thanks also to all who sent cards at this difficult time, and for thoughts and prayers. I was so blessed to be able to be with her during her last days, as were many in my family. We truly celebrated her life in those days!

Many thanks to everyone who had a hand in making our Mother's Day celebration so very special.  The music was awesome, communion was presented with sterling silver (see a theme here? Hmmm.), the sermon was witty and wise, our newest communicants joined us in the celebration of the last supper, and we were graced with special returning saints.  Great day!!!

Congratulations to all our graduating saints.  Years and years have culminated in this long-awaited event, a very special time in young lives.

Pentecost was a red-letter day, at St. Luke.  Pentecost, the birthday of our church, was celebrated in style, with balloons, wonderful guests, harp music, and 9 languages read from the book of Acts so we could share the experience of that long-ago day.  The Holy Spirit was revealed to the Church and makes no distinction for culture, language, or appearance.  We are all one race, created by God. Alelulia!

Many thanks to all the Sunday School teachers and helpers.  They are such an important force in our lives, young and adult.  A true labor of love. Bless you, one and all!

Tidbits of the Week - May 20, 2018
We had very special visitors, this Sunday: Marva Maples and Sherry Townsend from Delta Sigma Theta Alumnae Chapter graciously spoke about their history and mission. They are an international society and have quite an impressive membership, all dedicated to living the life God provides for us. They donated $1000 to St. Luke as a thank you and partnership with us, in their mission. Many thanks!!
Congratulations to all our graduates - High School and College. We are so very proud of all of you and wish you well in the most exciting time in your lives, coming up.
Hugs and thank you to all the teachers and helpers who made such a wonderful impact on our children and adults, this year. This is the Holy Spirit in action, for sure!
Once again, Nancy Lendman graced us with her beautiful harp music, which prepared us for worship, this Sunday. Many thanks, Nancy!
Cliff Notes: Pentecost is the birthday of our church, started in the 1st century. The party has been going on for 2018 years, which should be in some book of world records! (This writer's opinion.) It was the coming of the Holy Spirit in the history of the church and all nations of the world were invited - all cultures and languages, united in harmony which creates the community of faith. As the Holy Spirit enters into our lives, we live in the love God gave us. Remember Pastor Cliff's father's words: "There's always room for more at the table - get the extra leaf and extend the table!"

Tidbits of the Week - May 27, 2018
Many thanks to all the active duty and reserve military and veterans for their selfless service to us and our nation. We also remember the families of those who are serving and have served. They, too, have selflessly given time and absence of family for us. Bravo and job well done, faithful servants!
It's picnic season! In spite of the hot, humid day, we had a great time at the church picnic, on Sunday. Our Fellowship Committee did a super job, cooking, setting up, organizing, and cleaning up for us and we hereby give them the "Plastic Fork" award! Many thanks to all, and to Thrivent for the free ice cream!
Our service opened, this week, with a most beautiful Andante from Symphony #5 "Reformation" performed by Marcin Arendt and Nancy Graham. Wonderful, wonderful! Many thanks!
Shelby Cares: Pastor Cliff, Ed Cooley, and Sue Malone attended the "Shelby Cares" luncheon at the emergency management office, on Thursday. It was extremely informative and we at St. Luke are now part of that program.
Cliff Notes: Holy Trinity Sunday. Here is the mystery of God: How do we define Him and what does He look like? A wise mother of a mixed family answered her son in this way: God looks like water, reflecting all that He has created. Cliff went on to say He is three in one: He is huge (the bottom of His robe would cover the entire temple of Jerusalem!); He is "other:" majestic, holy, mysterious, and all powerful. At the same time, He is Abba, our father - so personal! He makes us His heirs, the giver of eternal life. Jesus came to save, to heal the world. Thanks be to the Trinity.

Tidbits of the Week - June 3, 2018
Patti's BACK from vacation! Yippy Skippy! Life can get back to normal and we can be less frantic. Praise the Lord and pass the potatoes!
25 cheers for Pastor Cliff, who was recognized at Synod Assembly for his silver anniversary of ordination. Lucky us for having him for 16 of those years! Congratulations, Pastor Cliff!!!
And, speaking of Synod Assembly, many thanks to Roberta and Burk Renner and Pastor Cliff for attending that meeting in East Tennessee. Can't wait to hear all about it...
Paul's Wise Words: Who have you met, this week, in passing; someone you see often but don't know all that well: a barista, the mechanic who works on your car, the receptionist at work...? They may seem inconsequential, but are they really? In Jesus' time, the Sabbath was for rest and rest only. When Jesus healed the man with the deformed hand, He was vilified by those who were determined to bring Him down. Healing on the Sabbath was considered work, if you put the law before man. Living the life God wants us to live means relating to people, not the law. We need to see people as an opportunity to bless our fellow man, to make his or her life better; in other words, to act like Jesus! God cares about people: their well-being, their holiness. Let's take a fresh look at what it means to be God's people; make a better life for someone else. We can see people as Jesus sees them and find a way to bless them. They're consequential!

Good Stewards
Good Stewards Needed!
Seek God, Serve Others, Share Life.  Sounds familiar. Ask an Assisting Minister, a Lector or a Children's Sermon giver if their efforts help them Seek God through word and prayer?  Ask a Greeter or Usher if they have an opportunity to Share Life with those whom they meet, especially visitors. Does preparing the Altar, serving communion, making coffee for everyone or helping worshipers visualize their experience through Multi Media serve others?  And finally there are the young saints. Any parent will tell you that young children are self-centered. Service is something that is learned and the best teacher is example.
All Good Stewards are needed, some more than others.  Major needs are for Youth to serve as Acolyte, Crucifer and Nursery Helper.  People to prepare the Altar for Sunday Worship is a big need. Being Lutheran, coffee is a necessity but very few people are signed up to make it for you.  And finally our littlest saints (Nursery) need more adult volunteers. If everyone signed up to do something, most folks will only serve once or twice per quarter.   Good Steward sign-up sheets are in the Narthex. Please prayerfully consider signing up or adding to your areas of service.

The Good Stewards schedule is also found on our church website under Calendar and Events from the "Get Involved" icon.

2018 ELCA Southeastern
Synod Assembly

The 2018 ELCA Southeastern Synod Assembly met June 1 - June 3, 2018 at the Chattanooga Convention Center, Chattanooga, TN.  Under the theme of Reformation 500...Now What? the Assembly began to consider who God is calling us to be and what God is calling us to do into the future.    Read Bishop Gordy's spoken report to the Assembly here.

Pictured above, Bishop H. Julian Gordy presides over the reception of the Rev. Crispin Ilombe Wilondja onto the ELCA roster of Word and Sacrament Ministry.  Rev. Ilombe was ordained in 2008 as a priest in the Jesuit order in the Congo.  He fled the Congo not long after being ordained following religious persecution and was granted asylum in the United States.  He is now the mission developer for Good Samaritan Ministry, Clarkston, GA and also works with Refugee Services as an employee of Lutheran Services of Georgia.

Read more Assembly Highlights and see photos here!  The Assembly website and materials are still available here.

Thank you to Roberta, Burk Renner and Pastor Cliff Bahlinger for attending from St. Luke.
