New Definition of Giftedness
|
The NAGC Giftedness Definition Task Force has created a new definition of giftedness that can be used by schools, professionals, policy makers, etc. to help understand, identify, and serve gifted students and individuals. Dr. Dan Peters, executive director and co-founder of Summit Center, served on the task force along with 11 others.
What is unique about this definition is that there is no percentage to define giftedness. The previous definition (from 2010) stated top 10%, and the field often used top 2%. "I initially argued for a number or some kind of qualifier," said Dr. Peters, "Although I was conflicted about the number as we know many of our 2e clients underperform due to their learning and processing issues."
The task force learned that the United States has a large problem under-identification due to low SES, second language learners, lack of proper identification methods, twice-exceptionality, etc. Continued Dr. Peters, "I learned that over-identification is not a problem at all in our country, and that our definition needed to capture as many young gifted minds as possible." Without a number, it is up to the individual professional, or school, to use as many methods as possible, or decided upon, to determine who qualifies based on the broad definition.
The definition states:
Students with gifts and talents perform-or have the capability to perform-at higher levels compared to others of the same age, experience, and environment in one or more domains. They require modification(s) to their educational experience(s) to learn and realize their potential. Student with gifts and talents:
- Come from all racial, ethnic, and cultural populations, as well as all economic strata.
- Require sufficient access to appropriate learning opportunities to realize their potential.
- Can have learning and processing disorders that require specialized intervention and accommodation.
- Need support and guidance to develop socially and emotionally as well as in their areas of talent.
- Require varied services based on their changing needs.
