From the President
Rick Wright
Hey Everyone,
I hope everyone is having fun in their league play so far. Seems like we went from winter right into summer. I do not have a lot to say at this time except if you choose to participate in a tournament this summer, please sign up and send in your entry fee by the deadline. This is very important to the tournament directors. If any of the tournament directors need more participation, there will be an announcement sent via email.
I would also like to mention that the new tournament, the MN Mixer has been cancelled due to lack of participation. This tournament was a way to help our membership grow in our sport. We may try this tournament again in the future. If anyone has any ideas or thoughts on how to help our association grow, I would like to hear from you.
Also, just a reminder that this is the last year that Forest Lake and Pine City will be hosting the State Tournament. If any club is interested in hosting the 2019/2020 State Tournament, please submit your bid by Aug 1st, 2018.
Also, Remember to enter the MN State Tournament on Labor Day Weekend in Genola. Your entry must be in by August 1st to Ann Hagman.
Enjoy your summer in horseshoes!

Alexandria Open Heats Up
by Janet Larson
Over the years we have always known that the weather can be a crap shoot Memorial Day weekend. We have endured cold, wind, rain and occasionally nice weather, but this year was a first, mid 90 degree temps. In July or August we may have been conditioned. For those of us who are not snow birds and barely survived this year's endless winter, it was just a little too much, too soon. The morning shift did manage to survive the heat, but we had a few people that were starting to suffer from the heat in the afternoon so we ended that shift after four games.
We always enjoy having our North Dakota friends come join us for the tournament and a big thank you to Joe Martin for photographing the event and placing a great post on Facebook about it. Check out the North Dakota Horseshoe Pitchers Facebook page. We also had six pitchers from MN come for the first time. They included Ron Monson, Lu Cave, Delbert Karsjens, Marlys Timm, Lori York and Christy Schilling. Thanks to everyone for driving out to western MN to join us.
The results of the tournament can be found under tournament results, but I just wanted to mention the extraordinary achievements in Class D. Ron Monson pitched 18.65 % over his entry average to claim first place with an overall average of 41.43%. He was followed by Don Claseman at 31.43% in 2nd place and Gary Kirckof pitched 25.36 % to claim 3rd. Don was 9.28% over his average and Gary was 8.35% over his. Keep in mind that this was our lowest percentage class of pitchers. Amazing job!

It`s that time of year to be thinking about the tournaments we are choosing to play this horseshoe season. I always try to play in a different tournament to meet and compete with some new competitors every season.
The world tournament is upon us and with a total of 1027 pitchers this is a fairly consistent number compared with the past few tournaments.
Minnesota
has 32 pitchers which is down a little in numbers but most of the regulars are
attending. League play is under way and the season so far has been exciting to say the least.
Bloomington
Wednesday night pitchers have voted to become unsanctioned so the State has lost approximately 35 pitchers which is a sad commentary and
a reflection of our times with the game of horseshoes. We need to keep our core of pitchers and try to add tournament pitcher to keep our game progressing.
So pitch in an extra tournament and meet some new friends and have a good Summer.

The NHPA Rules and Bylaws are voted on every three years, and 2018 is a Rules year. Each charter gets representatives that vote at the convention held during the World Tournament. The number of delegates is based on the charter's membership, so Minnesota and Missouri have the most delegates. If you are attending the WT this year and would like to be a delegate, please contact me ASAP.
I will be serving as the delagate foreman for MN. We will assemble our delegates and discuss the proposed rules changes as well as the elections of officers. If you wish to read the proposed rules changes, do so here
PROPOSED RULE CHANGES 2018
If you have any questions or comments regarding these proposals, or elections, please feel free to contact me.
The Spring Membership Meeting will be held this coming Sunday the 3rd at the Bud Nelson Open in Forest Lake around noon, so come on over and have a delicious hamburger and share your thoughts at the meeting.

Bloomington Club League Results
by Gene Gross
Our club reached another new high in membership in recent years to 45, up 4 from last year, as we had 14 new members. The Wednesday Night Team League,
consisted of 8 three person teams(with teams having four and even five members
for subs). We completed our season with a playoff on Sep 20, much
later than usual because of so many rainouts on Wednesdays. The winners were Maxine Abeln, Elaine Dupont, Mary Knoblach and Jeannie White. Jay Tumberg had the best personal win/loss record with 16.5 wins and only 5.5 losses. Larry
Miller had the High Average of 42.08%. Larry Miller and Kelly Reardon tied for the High Game of 52%.
Kelly also won The High Game Over Average with his 52% game with a 24.73%
average. Wendee Martin won the Most Improved going from 9.60 to 15.33%.
The Rookie of the Year award went to Pat Martin. Bill Lundholm again
did a great job of the league secretarial duties.
The Tuesday Night Singles League is a three 50 shoe game league.
Jim David repeated as champion in this league with 26 wins and 9
losses. Sara Otto finished in second place with 20 wins and 8 losses as she lost her last game by a nose.
Sara had the High Average of 60.59% and the High Game of 78%. Wendee Martin had the High Game over Average with a 36% game with a 18.06% average.
Rookie of the Year Award went to Bruce Colvet. Dave Wetzlich won the Most
Improved going from 22.48% to 27.33%.
We had a great turnout at our Year End Club Tournament. Kelly Reardon
won the Class A beating Robin Constance, who finished second. Lauri Tumberg
won the Class B title beating Randy Anderson. Scott Chalmers won Class C
beating Jeff Walker who had edged out Mary Knoblach by a fraction to place
second. Because of a great turnout we had a Class D for the second year in a
row with Craig Johnson beating Ryan Bordwell for first and second place.
At our Banquet we recognized Vern Bolduc with the Player of the Year Award.
Vern at the age of 92. He says this was his last year.

News from Upsala
by Janet Larson
The Upsala Winter Horseshoe League completed their season with a banquet and awards on Monday, April 9, 2018. Mel and Joyce Larson treated everyone to a fantastic ham supper complete with baked potato, coleslaw, fresh fruit, carrots and delicious brownies. The afternoon league had 12 regular pitchers, while the evening league had eight. Mother Nature wreaked havoc in March and early April, causing us to cancel our games on four nights. We finally gave in and eliminated the usual playoff season.
Winners on the afternoon league were:
1st Place - Mel Larson 24.5 wins / 11.5 losses
2nd Place-Walt Beneke 23.5 wins / 12.5 losses
3rd Place- Llyod Barthel 22 wins / 14 losses
4th Place-Jim Volkers 20.5 wins / 15.5 losses
High series went to Lloyd Barthel with 373 total points in 4 games. Al Nicholson came in 2nd with 354 points.
High game also went to Lloyd Barthel with a whopping 110 points. Butch Hennes had a 97 point game, followed closely by Al Nicholson with a high game of 96 points.
Winners on the evening league were:
1st Place-Janet Larson 23 wins / 13 losses
2nd Place-Gary Boots 22 wins / 14 losses
3rd Place-Kathy Welle / 21.5 wins / 14.5 losses
High series went to Mike Holz with 365 points, followed by Janet Larson with 353 points and Gary Boots with 352 points.
High game went to Myron VanderWeyst on the last game of the season, 99 points. Coming in second was Mike Holz with 97 and then Gary Boots with 96 points.
We'd like to applaud two of the afternoon pitchers, Maury Palmerschein, who is still going strong at the age of 94, and Jerry Zastrow who missed all of the 2017 season due to illness. Jerry is back on the courts this year and able to keep up with everyone else with the assist of a walker.
Afternoon group: Back row-Randy Werk, Mel Larson, Walt Beneke, Jim Volkers, Butch Hennes and Jerry Zastrow. Front row - Don Waldoch, Lu Cave, Jerry Werk and Maury Palmerschein. Not pictured were Lloyd Barthel and Al Nicholson. Subs were Vicki Barthel and Joyce Larson.
|
Evening group: Back row- Mike Hotz, Gary Boots, Myron VanderWeyst, and Kathy Welle. Front row-Janet Larson, DaveGaida and Lois Duea. Not pictured Jim Kotzer.
