Summer Learning at ECRL begins May 28th!

The 2019 Summer Learning Program at East Central Regional Library will be out of this world! Our summer program, A Universe of Stories, begins Tuesday, May 28th, and we encourage everyone to stop by their local branch and pick up their materials!

For kids ages 3-11, you will be asked to complete 20 hours of reading and/or reading-related activities. For each 5 hour milestone you will get a prize! When you reach 20 hours you will also get your name in the Grand Pri ze Drawing! Grand prizes vary by location but every location, including Outreach, has 4 packs of tickets to the Minnesota State Fair to give away.

For teens, you will be asked to submit book reviews. For each review submitted, your name will go in the prize drawing for fabulous prizes including 4 packs of tickets to the Minnesota State Fair!

At select locations, we have our Rubber Ducky Club for younger readers, ages 0-3. We ask that caregivers and children complete tasks that will help develop early literacy skills. Prizes are a rubber ducky and a board book!

Adults, we have something fun for you, too! At select locations, we'll be offering an adult version of our summer program. You will be asked to complete reading related activities or submit book reviews for your chance to win prizes!

Before you blast off, check out some stellar events this summer. The fun begins with a visit from The Jolly Pops, a musical trio of Dads who live to rock out with kids of all ages.

Upcoming Events:
Author Visit: Nancy O'Brien Wagner

Tuesday, May 21st at 6:30pm - Princeton Area Library

Nancy has worked as a historian, exhibit
developer, and interpretive planner for nearly 20 years. Her exhibit about the 35W Bridge collapse
won an American Association for State and Local History award.

She has authored many local histories, including a history of Saint Paul's Central High School, as well as the recent centennial history of the Minnesota Governor's Residence. Her history on the Trout Brook Valley was a winner of a St. Paul AIA/Historic Preservation Commission award.

Nancy will be talking about her book,  Alice in France, which features the World War I letters of  Alice M. O'Brien. The letters were as revealing as they were engaging, written by a woman who along with thousands of others volunteered for service in World War I Europe, taking on jobs that freed men for the trenches.
This program is funded with money from Minnesota's Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

Abraham Lincoln at Gettysburg

Saturday, June 8th at 10:30am - Rush City Public Library

November 19 marks the anniversary
of the Gettysburg address, one of the greatest in American History. In this program, documents, stories, and photographs from the 1860s will help us explore the Battle of Gettysburg... from the circumstances that led to it, to its conclusion with Pickett's famous charge.

We'll follow Abraham Lincoln to Gettysburg, where he had been invited to follow the two-hour speech of noted orator Edward Everett with a few remarks in dedication of the new cemetery.  Presenter Dale Blanshan will be in period attire to give the address in person!
This program is funded with money from Minnesota's Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

Visiting artist Anjee Emerson will be using various learning styles (visual, verbal and kinesthetic) to help you sculpt your very
own polymer clay creation to bring home and love! Use your imagination to bring to life a character from one of your favorite books (or any critter you think up).

Registration is required for this two-hour workshop. Participants will follow instructions with Anjee's help to create their clay friend out of bright, colorful polymer clay. Everyone will get to leave with their finished masterpiece and having learned some basic sculpting techniques.

This workshop is perfect for kids ages 8 and up. All supplies are provided.

This program is funded with money from Minnesota's Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

These  programs  are sponsored by East Central Regional Library, local Friends of the Library groups, and other local organizations.

F eatured New Materials:
Ava Collette is punishing herself for an unspeakable tragedy. So she flees Boston and rents an old home named Brodie's Watch on a remote coastal peninsula of Maine. She immediately feels at peace in the isolated house-until she starts to hear strange noises.

Rumor has it that a sea captain named Brodie has haunted the house for decades. Then, one night, Ava is awakened to find herself face to face with a ghost who looks-and feels-all too real. Meanwhile, there's been a series of accidental deaths nearby that don't add up.

Soon all of Ava's waking hours are consumed by her investigation, and her nights are ignited by Captain Brodie's ghostly visits. But even as she questions her own sanity, she knows she must uncover the truth before a killer strikes again.

At the local state university, two feuding departments have faced off on the battleground of PC culture. Each carries their views to extremes that may seem absurd, but highly educated people of sound mind and good intentions can reasonably disagree, right?

Then someone winds up dead, and Virgil Flowers is brought in to investigate . . . and he soon comes to realize he's dealing with people who, on this one particular issue, are functionally crazy. Among this group of wildly impassioned, diametrically opposed zealots lurks a killer, and it will be up to Virgil to sort the murderer from the mere maniacs..
