As my time among you comes to a close, I want to thank all of you who have so unselfishly volunteered your time to this congregation over the past two years, in so many different ways. Volunteers are the foundation of congregational life, and in this congregation, a very high proportion of the membership volunteers in one way or another (and often in many ways at once!). I have enjoyed working with so many dedicated people. You are truly amazing!
Thank you all, many times over.

This Sunday is our Flower service. Please remember to bring a flower for every attending member of your family to add to the communal bouquet. These flowers in their beauty and diversity represent the gift of yourselves that you all bring to the congregation. At the end of the service you will chose a new one to take home, representing the gifts you receive from others in the congregation.

Are we ready for summer yet? My heart goes out to the parents who are busy trying to fit in even more extra end-of-school celebrations and graduations. Then we have to be ready for the kids to be out of school. Sometimes things are a mixed blessing. One thing we do know for sure .. our children are a blessing to us and the world. May we always remember to be grateful for our mixed blessings.
Summer RE is very informal with nursery care provided and some volunteers making some time to be with a small group of elementary through middle school kids. You can sign up here:

This past Sunday we saw a small sample of the work the kids and teachers have been doing during the year on RE Sunday. Bright and shiny faces, a jazz version of This Little Light of Mine, and youth really being part of the whole morning as greeters, ushers, readers, and presenters. As fun as this all was, I got feedback from a few parents that this would be better done earlier in the year so that it didn't overlap with the rest of the end-of-school events. Good feedback.
Since we are looking to another new year in the Fall, now would be the right time to send feedback about anything related to RE. I will take it to the next RE Committee meeting. All feedback is welcome.
RE Program starts up again on Aug 26th with morning classes and an OWL information meeting for anyone interested in getting the basic layout of the Our Whole Lives program. Since we are going to start the year off with an OWL class for our K-2, we especially want the whole community to spread the word about this opportunity and super especially want all the parents of our K-2 children to attend this Aug 26th OWL info meeting.
Next Thursday is my last scheduled full day at UUCM until Aug 1st. I do hope you all have a beautiful and restful summer taking the time you need for family renewal and self-care. Have a great Summer!!!

Message from (sidelined-but-still-a-UUCM-member) Joan Nelson:
I don't go out very much these days. My energy conservation program: conserve / spurt / conserve / spurt. Two hours is the minimum conserve and the maximum spurt. You are welcome to a pre-planned spurt-visit at my home any time.(call or email me)
Meanwhile it looks like I'm not yet out of social causes to support.
I went to Sacramento in 2015 and wagged my finger at the legislature to get The
End of Life Options Act
passed. Governor Brown signed it in June, 2016. This Spring, as soon as it was clear that I had 6 months or less to live, I started jumping through the administrative and diagnostic hoops. I met all the qualifications and have in my possession the lethal medication for self-administration when suffering becomes "intolerable."
Then....Wham! May 24. The law was overturned! No matter how "intolerable" the pain becomes, it won't as be as intolerable to me as is this legal nightmare.
Please remember the name "Compassion & Choices:Our nation's oldest, largest and most active nonprofit organization committed to improving care and expanding options for the end of life.
On Tuesday, May 29, Compassion & Choices filed a motion on behalf of a physician, one other terminally ill Californian and Yours Truly.
Now the "right-to-die," "death-with-dignity" law is in a legal battle that looks like it will probably last longer than I will be part of it. And it will be costly.
Compassion & Choices needs all the donations we can get. So tell your friends and neighbors to join you as you go to the Compassion & Choices website.

Highlights of UUCM Congregational Meeting - June 3

Highlights of the meeting were:
The slate for the next year's board and nominating committee were approved.
Congregational Delegates to General Assembly in Kansas City on June 20-24 were approved unanimously. The
proposed Operating Budget of $411,055 for Expenditures with Total Revenue of $398,803 for 2018-19 with a possible deficit of $13,000 was approved unanimously by the congregation and then several members pledged over $5,000 to reduce the deficit.
Certificates and praise were given to outstanding volunteers and various staff members were recognized.

On June 17th, following the service, we will honor Rev. Joy Atkinson, who is concluding a successful 2 year interim ministry with us and beginning her own transition into retirement after 41 years of ministry.
We invite everyone reading this to write a letter, note, card-or pen a cartoon, poem, or drawing-in celebration of Rev. Joy . These will be included in a scrapbook we are creating.
Please be part of the process! Sharing a memory, reflection or funny anecdote can be done in just a few moments. (Really you will be amazed at what you can write in 5 minutes or less; and you will feel good about doing it and she will feel good reading it). So good all around.....

Between mid-June and August regular Religious Exploration classes do not meet, but we like to have youth-friendly activities available for UUCM kids and visiting families at a table in the foyer. Do you have a craft, game, or outdoor activity for ages 6 to teens that you would be willing to share on one Sunday ?

SAVE THE DATE for the Autumn Auction on Saturday, October 6, 2018, 5:30-9:00 p.m. We hope this will be as successful as the auction last October. The rough scheduling is: 5:30-7:00 for silent auction and social hour (hors d'oeuvres, drinks); 7:00-8:30 for live auction and potluck dinner; 8:30-9:00 check out.

UUA General Assembly Update
|
|
General Assembly Kansas City, Missouri
General Assembly is the annual meeting of our Unitarian Universalist Association. Attendees worship, witness, learn, connect, and make policy for the Association through democratic process. The 2018 General Assembly will be June 20-24 in Kansas City, Missouri. GA will offer more than 175 programming selections over the course of five days. Major worships this year will be lead by UUA President Rev. Susan Frederick-Gray and Rev. Sofia Betancourt.

UUCM Readers' Theater invites members and friends to join our fun-loving group. We meet twice a month, on the second and fourth Monday of each month, from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm at UUCM. Most of the time, we read short plays aloud when we meet, but every 6-8 weeks we rehearse and then present short prose or poems during a service. No memorizing required, but you should be willing to ham it up and be silly. Information: Jan Seagrave (
