Hurricane Harvey Relief Appreciation Reception
Thursday, June 7
5:30 - 7pm
On Thursday, June 7th , the principal from St. Joseph Regional Catholic School is coming to visit. There will be a reception with light hors d’oeuvres in the St. Mary Parish Center in Charlevoix from 5:30-7that evening to meet Principal Deborah Francis and hear how the families are doing now. All are welcome and encouraged to come.
Last September, many people in our community came together to help St. Joseph Regional Catholic School of Baytown, Texas after they were hit by Hurricane Harvey. Three staff members and four student families had lost everything and it was heart breaking. In just 5 days we filled a 53’ trailer with enough couches, beds, mattresses, kitchen tables, linens, quilts, chairs, table lamps, small appliances, and so much more. Unsung heroes made this possible. They are too numerous to mention here, but know you are all in our hearts and prayers. It truly was a community effort giving their love to people in need.

This Just In! H-2B Visas Expanded
|
The Charlevoix Area Chamber of Commerce and the Northern Michigan Chamber Alliance received word from Congressman Jack Bergman’s office last week that Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen announced that an additional 15,000 H-2B temporary nonagricultural worker visas will be available for Fiscal Year 2018. Secretary Nielsen said she determined there are not sufficient, qualified, U.S. workers available to perform the labor needs of American businesses. This allocation is in addition to the 66,000 visas already issued this year. Starting immediately, eligible petitioners for H-2B visas can file Form I-129, Petition for a Nonimmigrant Worker. Eligible petitioners must submit a supplemental attestation on Form ETA 9142-B-CAA-2 with their petition. Charlevoix Chamber President
Alison Hubbard said this was good news for northern Michigan businesses. “The Northern Michigan Chamber Alliance has been advocating for an expansion of H-2B visas to help meet workforce shortage needs,” she said. “This temporary fix will help for now and we’ll continue to advocate for a more permanent solution,” she added. Hubbard thanks Government Relations Staff Member Kent Wood, and Congressman Jack Bergman and his staff for their efforts for this expansion.

School Safety Training with Charlevoix Law Enforcement
|
The Charlevoix Area Schools have invited local law enforcement from Boyne City, City of Charlevoix, East Jordan, and the Sheriff’s Office to use the facilities for active shooter training over two days, June 12 and 13. The purpose of the drill is to provide ongoing readiness training to local law enforcement specific to active assailants in a school setting. The training occurs between the end of school and proposed construction to the middle school to maintain realism during the training. Mike Ritter, Charlevoix Public Schools Superintendent states “This will offer our emergency responders an authentic safety and security training experience to carry out whatever tactical measures might occur during a true active shooter situation.” Charlevoix County Sheriff Chuck Vondra stated "This is an exercise that is bringing in law enforcement from all over the county so that we can train together like we would respond together. Bringing in EMS and Fire deepens interagency relationships and tests every aspect of the response to an incident of this magnitude."
Added Ritter: “We greatly appreciate the support of all of our local EMS agencies that work in concert to provide safety in our schools and communities!”
