Governor Phil Murphy was joined by NJ Turnpike Authority Executive Director John Keller, NJDOT Commissioner Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti, local officials, and NJ Turnpike Authority Commissioners at the ribbon cutting for the newly completed $172 million Interchange 14A on the Newark Bay-Hudson County Extension.  Governor Murphy declared the finished project a win for commuters and truckers, and a boon to the local economy.  " This is a critical infrastructure investment in the lives of tens of thousands of people who travel through Bayonne and Jersey City every day and in the futures of everyone who makes their living here in Hudson County," said Governor Murphy. New Jersey's New Pay Equity Law

Governor Phil Murphy's new pay equity law take effect July 1st. The act will force many businesses to confront pay equity.  It will also make it easier for women and protected classes to pursue pay-discrimination claims, and significantly expands the amount of damages they can collect from employers if found guilty.
  • The act porhibits unequal pay for "substantially similar work", defined as a composite of skill, effort, and responsibility.  This places a far greater burden of proof on employers to explain differences in wage.  However, the act does allow differences in pay based on a seniority or merit system, or if the employer can demonstrate that factors such as training and experience apply.
  • The act requires employers to justify differences in pay among protected classes based on race, sexual orientation, disability, religion, and other factors.  Experts say most employees fit into at least 3 protected class categories.
  • Employers cannot require employees to keep their salary information confidential from each other.
  • The act restarts the statute of limitations for filing a claim each time a discriminatory paycheck is issued.  Further, employers are liable to provide damages of up to 6 years of back pay if found guilty in a court of law.
