Chairman's Message: U.S.-Japan Alliance: Deepening Ties While Confronting New Challenges

In the latest Chairman's Message , Admiral Dennis Blair used the recent Sasakawa USA Fifth Annual Security Forum as an opportunity to reflect on the U.S.-Japan Alliance. In his essay, Admiral Blair parses the defense policies and strategies of Japan and the United States during the past five years. The threats from North Korea and China have grown more intense, writes Admiral Blair, but the Alliance and cooperation between Japan and the United States have never been stronger.

Upcoming Event: A Turning Point with North Korea?: Regional Perspectives on the U.S.-North Korea Summit

On June 13, join Sasakawa USA and the Korea Economic Institute of America (KEI) for "A Turning Point with North Korea?: Regional Perspectives on the U.S.-North Korea Summit," a public panel discussion on the prospective U.S.-North Korea summit and whether it can be a turning point for relations with North Korea. Ambassador James Zumwalt, CEO, Sasakawa USA, is speaking as a panelist. The event will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the KEI Conference Facility.
News: Sasakawa USA partners with ICFJ for next emerging experts delegation

In 2018, Sasakawa USA will partner with the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) to select eight American journalists to participate in the 6th iteration of the SEED (Sasakawa USA Emerging Experts Delegation) program. ICFJ is a non-profit institution working to empower journalists to deliver trustworthy news that is essential for vibrant societies by helping build the expertise and storytelling skills of reporters worldwide. Participants will travel together to Japan in late fall/early winter for a week of meetings and activities organized around the theme of "Modernization of Japan's defense strategy and implications for the United States and the Asia-Pacific Region." The deadline for journalists to apply is July 30, 2018.

Upcoming Event: Book launch for Japan's Energy Conundrum

On June 25, Sasakawa USA will host a book launch for
Japan's Energy Conundrum at Washington D.C.'s Army and Navy Club.  Edited by Sasakawa USA Senior Fellow for Energy and Technology Dr. Phyllis Genther Yoshida, Japan's Energy Conundrum  tackles Japan's attempts to manage and balance domestic supply and demand for energy, changing global energy markets, its climate change goals, and its overall energy security in the years after March 11, 2011. 

The launch will include a panel discussion featuring several of the book's chapter authors. Dr. Kent Calder, Director of Asia Programs and Director of Edwin O. Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies, Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, will moderate. Lunch will be served. RSVP is required.

New publication: Sister Cities: Seedbed for the Grassroots of U.S.-Japan Relations

Grace Ruch Clegg, former Projects and Outreach Coordinator at the East-West Center in Washington DC, participated in the Sasakawa USA 2017-2018 In-Depth Alumni Research Trip to Japan. In a paper published on Sasakawa USA's Commentary & Analysis web page, Ruch Clegg shares her findings on the legacy, benefits, challenges, and outlook for sister city relationships between the United States and Japan. New publication: Start-ups and Their Entrepreneurial Leadership Cannot Hold Off On Cybersecurity

In December 2017, Sasakawa USA partnered with the Center for a New American Security (CNAS) to take a cohort of seven rising U.S. cybersecurity experts and technology entrepreneurs for a week-long study trip to Japan. The SEED (Sasakawa USA Emerging Experts Delegation) cohort included Megan Stifel, Cybersecurity Policy Director, Public Knowledge, who recently wrote about the challenges governments and entrepreneurs face when addressing cybersecurity for Sasakawa USA's Commentary & Analysis web page. True Stories from Japan: A Japanese Perspective on the DC Experience 

Sasakawa USA Research Intern Ryosuke Kimura writes about his transition this year from Japan to Washington D.C. in the latest True Stories from Japan post. News: Applications for the fall 2018 Congressional Staff Program on Asia are now open

Applications are now open for the fall 2018 Congressional Staff Program on Asia (CSPA), a bipartisan educational certificate program which aims to equip Congressional staffers with greater knowledge of U.S.-Asia policy. This semester-long certificate program consists of a weekly series of eight, one-hour luncheon discussions, held at a Capitol Hill location on Fridays during September and October 2018. Speakers will be from government agencies, think tanks, universities, and other policy relevant institutions. The application deadline is July 27. This program is administered by the East-West Center in Washington, with support from Sasakawa USA.

Sasakawa USA is seeking an enthusiastic and proactive entry-level Program Assistant to support our Education programs, including congressional outreach activities. Responsibilities and duties include programmatic and administrative support, preparation of grant proposals and reports, event planning, and communications.
