Capital Campaign Update

If you weren't at Asbury this past weekend and missed Eric & Kelly Arnold and Roger & Kim Peck's presentation on the latest building work to be completed, we're going to give you a little update here!

1) HVAC work on the east wing of the building was completed.  The new equipment provides a higher level of efficiency, state of the art controls and better zoning for a variety of uses.
2) HVAC screens were installed for the security of the equipment and to provide a visually appealing facade.
3) The dumpsters were screened in so that they weren't the first thing people saw when they entered the building!
4) The carpets in the MSR entry area, 3rd floor hallway, and youth classrooms that had become a tripping hazard were replaced.
5) The 3rd floor hallway, MSR entry area, and Narthex were repainted.
6) Currently, we are working on much-needed maintenance for the organ (it hasn't had any maintenance since it was installed in 1979!)

What's next on the list?  The refresh of the Hager Hall entry, an upgrade of the kitchen in Hager Hall, remodeling of the restrooms on the 3rd floor west wing, and improving the spot lighting in the Sanctuary.

As of last month, we currently have received $426,000 of the $908,000 pledged for these projects!  Almost half of the pledged amount has been received in 1/3 of the campaign timeframe.  We currently have sufficient funds in hand to complete the Hager Hall entrance and that process will begin shortly.

Thank you to everyone who has given so generously towards this much-needed maintenance of our church home!

Repent & Resist Ash Wednesday 2020 | Wednesday, February 26 from 8 am-5 pm
at St. Paul's UMC in Lenexa
This event was created by clergy in Wichita who noticed that the one-year anniversary of the Traditional Plan being passed at General Conference falls on Ash Wednesday this year.  Therefore, this will be a day of peaceful resistance to the Traditional Plan and all other forms of oppression in the church.  Everyone in the KC District is welcome to join us at this event at St. Paul's UMC in Lenexa from 8 am-5 pm (7740 Lackman Rd, Shawnee, KS 66217).  The day will be broken up into one hour "sessions," and each session will include a word from clergy, music, prayer stations, and the imposition of ashes.

Help Serve at Lazarus Table | Saturday, March 14 from 10 am-1pm
at Linwood United Church
Lazarus Table serves the homeless and hungry in Kansas City by providing hot meals each weekend.  In 2017, Lazarus Ministries moved from downtown to Linwood United Church in midtown.  A commercial kitchen operates weekly to prepare meals.  Lazarus Table offers meals "restaurant style."  Volunteers act as hosts, greeting each guest and waiters take and deliver orders.  Lazarus Table provides a place where Sojourners initially come for a meal, but ultimately find a sense of community.  Asbury serves meals at Lazarus Table three times a year.  We are looking for 8 people to serve on Saturday, March 14 from 10 am-1 pm.  Please use the Sign Up Genius link below to volunteer.  Contact Kim Peck at kimleypeck@gmail.com with any questions.  Thank you!

Rise Against Hunger Meals sent to Madagascar

In October, many Asbury folks stayed after worship and helped assemble 10,000 meals to feed hungry people around the world.  The Asbury meals were stored in Indianapolis and have now joined 275,000 others in a container on its way to Madagascar.  Adventist Development and Relief Agency is the local partner distributing the meals.  Find Madagascar on a map and imagine the children who can concentrate on their school work after enjoying lunch with their friends.  May God continue to bless the efforts of Rise Against Hunger.  We are blessed to be part of God's good work.

Youth Group - Sundays @ 6 pm in the Youth Lounge
Our youth series for January and February connects faith and justice with pop culture.  We'll look at Marvel's Avengers franchise to find connections with the character bios and their mission and our identities and the ways we are called to put our faith into action in the world.  We'll spend time discussing some of the dilemmas the characters encounter and relate them to the dilemmas we face in our own lives.  We will dive into the movies, scripture, and both the 2017-2020 Social Principles and the proposed 2020 Social Principles of the United Methodist Church.  This week we will look at The Incredible Hulk.
