NSPE Fellow Membership Grade
Nomination Deadline: March 1
The NSPE Fellow Program is a national program intended to recognize deserving professional engineers who have demonstrated long term professional service at the chapter, state and national levels of NSPE.  The NSPE Board of Directors established the Fellow recognition program to honor those licensed members who have demonstrated exemplary service to the profession, the Society, and the community.

Fellow nominations may be submitted to the NSPE Council of Fellows Executive Committee (COFEC) by a state society of NSPE, a NSPE Interest Group, a NSPE Chartered Affinity Group or, a member of the NSPE Board of Directors with the NSPE Board's endorsement.  NSPE Interest Groups are defined as the five Legacy Interest Groups defined in Bylaw 21 and Chartered Affinity Groups are defined as organizations with which NSPE has a written affinity group agreement (currently the National Academy of Forensic Engineers and the National Academy of Building Inspection Engineers.  These definitions may be expanded over time if interest groups and chartered affinity groups are added. Public supports rigorous licensing
ARPL

The Alliance for Responsible Professional Licensing, a coalition NSPE spearheaded in 2019, is working to get the message out about licensing's importance. ARPL has released results from a recent national survey on public opinion of professional licensing standards.

The public overwhelmingly supports licensing regulations for complex, highly technical professions that have a direct impact on public health, safety, and welfare. The majority believe professional licensing requirements protect the public and shouldn't be reformed.  READ MORE

Design-build takes hold in all but 2 states
Construction Dive

In the last 25 years, the design-build delivery method has caught on with not just contractors but also government officials, customers and jurisdictions across the country. Design-build has been impressive in roads, but there is still work to be done to maintain its foothold, said Richard Thomas, director of state and local legislative affairs of the Design-Build Institute of America. State legislatures generally turn over every decade, and freshman legislators need to be educated about the benefits the alternative delivery method has for government-funded projects.   READ MORE
Energy Department to provide $64 million for cost-shared projects on coal-fired plant of the future
Power Engineering

The Trump administration's Department of Energy (DOE) announced $64 million in federal funding to help prospective coal-fired power plants become smaller, less expensive and more environmentally friendly. DOE Secretary Dan Brouillette touted the funding for cost-shared research and development projects for the Coal FIRST Power Plants of the Future program. Coal currently generates about 27% of the nation's electricity mix, but utilities are retiring plants - and not building new ones - amidst concerns over economic viability and carbon emissions.   READ MORE

Review: Government bodies not 'sufficiently transparent' about AI
Engineering and Technology

A review into AI and its ethical use by government and other public bodies has concluded that there are "serious deficiencies" in regulation relating to the issue, although it stopped short of recommending the establishment of a new regulator. The review focused on how public bodies could continue to uphold the "Nolan Principles" of public life as AI becomes increasingly integrated into public services.   READ MORE

Why Women Choose, and Stay, in Engineering
nspe.org

Multiple studies have examined the obstacles that interfere with women choosing or staying in engineering careers. Recently, DiscoverE flipped the issue by examining the common factors that motivate young women to both enter and persist in engineering.
According to the study, young women who choose and/or persist in engineering.

Protect the PE Fund
nspe.org

There are obvious differences between barbers and professional engineers, but many state politicians have begun to classify the two together. Since the start of 2016, 31 states have introduced legislation and/or regulations that would erode and even destroy PE licensure as we know it today, all in the name of allegedly creating greater competition. NSPE is fighting to ensure that the licensed practice of professional engineering is considered a learned profession and that the engineering license is treated like a medical license. We live in a fast-paced, ever changing world in which professional engineering is constantly growing and evolving. Public policy, established through legislation, regulations, or litigation, are shaping the ability of professional engineers to practice. The profession is constantly facing new and growing challenges and opportunities.  READ MORE
