Dear  ,

The weather may be dismal, so enjoy these two rays of sunshine in Needham - a plastic bag milestone and a food rescue program.  More to come in the weeks ahead!
Needham's largest retail outlets are now in compliance with the Select Board's Plastic Checkout Bag Policy

The Select Board's Plastic Checkout Bag Policy was adopted on March 20, 2018. It requested that the largest stores in town (over 3,500 square feet) discontinue the use of single-use plastic shopping bags. Green Needham's Plastic Bag Ban team led an effort asking the board to adopt a ban on single-use plastic bags by retailers in Needham.

At a February 27th, 2018 standing-room-only Select Board public hearing on the problems of plastic bags, virtually every resident in attendance supported a bylaw prohibiting the bags.  The Select Board decided against creating a bylaw - choosing instead to request the largest stores to voluntarily discontinue single-use checkout bags - after securing a commitment from CVS, Petco, Roche Bros and Sudbury Farms, Staples, Trader Joe's and Walgreens to stop using them by June 1, 2018.  Read more ...

Food Rescue Program Off and Running at Needham High School

Handling leftovers at home is one thing, but what do you do with unsold food left over from a cafeteria that feeds over 1,500 students? Fortunately, food rescue is in great hands at Needham High School thanks to a partnership with the organization Food for Free. Starting in January 2019, much of the safe, unplated food left over from the high school cafeteria, that can't be used there, is no longer discarded. Instead, Food for Free makes sure that those unsold chicken and cheese quesadillas or other dishes find their way to persons in need, perhaps families or college students struggling to make ends meet.

What We Should All Know about the Latest Climate Science

Climate scientists are increasingly sounding the alarm about the need for bold action to address climate change. The October Special Report by the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the Fourth National Climate Assessment by the U.S. Government have re-energized the discussion of the unprecedented challenge we face.

On Wednesday, June 5, at 7:30 p.m. Dr. Rachel Cleetus, Climate and Energy Policy Director at the Union of Concerned Scientists, will speak on Urgency and Opportunity: What the Latest Climate Science Tells Us. The presentation will take place at Temple Beth Shalom, 670 Highland Ave. in Needham.    Read more ...
