Board Updates:
Heather Wagner, Student and Family Resource Specialist provided an overview of her responsibilities and how she helps remove barriers to education for students and families in the district.  Wagner is the McKinney-Vento Liason and Point of Contact for the district which is mandated by the Every Student Succeeds Act. She also works with a number of community partners to help ensure that students' needs are met and they can focus on their education. Any student that is in need of basic necessities can take advantage of the services Wagner provides to all schools in the district.

Patricia Saenz-Reyes, Migrant Education Program Director, shared information to the board regarding the Migrant Education Program.  The program is available for families who move to the Emporia area to find employment that has a focus on agriculture. The Migrant Education Program removes barriers for students to achieve academic success and helps to ensure that students and their families have a sense of belonging to their school and community.

Dr. Ryan Karjala, Associate Executive Director of Assessment and Accountability, reviewed a report on chronic absenteeism for the district.  Chronic Absenteeism is defined as missing 10 percent or more days of school for excused and unexcused reasons. To date, during the 2019-2020 school year, the district has approximately 16.6 percent of students who meet that criteria. Emporia Public Schools' absentee rate is similar to that of other schools in Kansas.  The district utilizes several resources to help reduce chronic absenteeism including Communities In Schools, EduClimber, Student and Family Resources, and the Migrant Education Program. In addition, schools are also working on redesign opportunities to help make the curriculum more engaging and meaningful for students.
