Art Show & Ice Cream Social
I hope to see you at our annual Art Show & Ice Cream Social on  Wednesday, May 15 , 6:00-7:30 pm.  Come see displays of art students have created throughout the year, enjoy a complimentary ice cream sundae, and more! The flyer is here.
  • VOLUNTEERS : More volunteers are needed to help set up the art show (May 14) and help at the event (May 15).  Sign up here.
  • PARKING: Many families will be coming to this event! Once the Bassett parking lot is full, you will be directed to park at St. Ladislas. Parking is not permitted in the bus loop or in the exit lane to Bassett Rd. 
Please note that if you are unable to attend on May 15, the artwork will be on display until May 17. 



Ivy + Bean Play
Brecksville Theater will be at Bassett on Monday, May 13 to perform Ivy + Bean for our K-2 students. Thank you to our PTA for sponsoring this program.



A Taste of Westlake
A Taste of Westlake is Thursday, May 16, 6:30-9:30 pm at Doubletree by Hilton. This event is a fundraiser for Citizens for Westlake Schools featuring over 35 restaurants! More information is here and in the article below. Tickets may be purchased here.



Walk to School Day
Our spring Walk to School Day is Friday, May 17. I hope you can participate! More information is here and in the article below.



D.A.R.E in 3rd grade
Starting  Friday, May 17, our 3rd grade students will have D.A.R.E. instruction with Officer Keenan Cook from the Westlake Police Department. D.A.R.E. is an education program that teaches decision making for safe and healthy living. 
 
Each 3rd grade class will meet with Officer Cook for 30 minutes on May 17, 22, 23, 24, 29, and 30. If you have questions, please contact Officer Cook at  cookk@wlake.org.


DIS Counselor visits 4th grade
The Dover Intermediate School counselor, Ms. Brickman, will visit 4th grade classes on Friday, May 17  to talk with students about 5th grade.

DIS Music Form
Last week the DIS principal, Mr. Miller, sent a message to 4th grade parents about music electives for 5th grade (band, orchestra, choir). The message is here. The music elective e-form is here



YouthTruth Survey
The  YouthTruth Overall School Experience Survey  will be administered to 3rd and 4th grade students during the school day between May 13 and 24. 

During this time, K-12 parents are encouraged to take the family survey. The survey goes live on Monday, May 13 here

Crayon and Marker Recycling
Through the end of the school year, Bassett is collecting broken crayons and used up markers for recycling through the  Crayon Initiative and the  Crayola ColorCycle program Please place broken crayons and used up markers (any brand) in the bins in the front hallway.

May is in full swing! There are several volunteer opportunities in the month of May as we celebrate the end of our school year. Thank you to all of the wonderful volunteers we have at Bassett!



Bassett PTA Farewell Dinner
Please join us on Thursday, May 30 at 7:00 pm at Rosewood Grill as  we celebrate our final Bassett school year and thank our wonderful PTA volunteers and staff! If you are able to attend, p lease submit your RSVP and payment here by Friday, May 24.

Bassett Community Open House
After 51 years of laughter and learning, Bassett Elementary will hold its final day of classes in June.  Students, parents, staff, alumni, and members of the community are invited to bid adieu to Bassett at our Community Open House on Tuesday, June 4, 4:00-7:00 pm

Stop by to tour the building, browse 50 years of yearbooks, and reminisce with friends old and new. Enjoy a sweet treat from Maria's Ice Cream Wagon from 4:00-5:45 pm.

Shout Outs
Thank you  to Bassett custodian, Mr. Rich Skvarek, and to Tracy Ziminski for planting the beautiful spring flowers at our Bassett entryway!
 
Shout out to our Staff Appreciation Week chairs,  Jennifer Orley,  Rachael Pisanelli, and Michelle Shapiro for organizing a wonderful week for all of our Bassett staff members!
 
A huge thank you to our Hospitality chairs,  Kelly McCann and Sarah Tabeling, for organizing daily meals and treats for our staff during Staff Appreciation Week. Thank you to everyone who donated items for the teacher's lounge.
 
Thank you to Mrs. Clark, Mrs. Larcey, Sarah Tabeling, and Erin Westley for being the PTA Chairs for Young Authors. From supporting the authors to planning a wonderful celebration, the program was a success again!
 
Thank you to Mrs. Kowalski and the 2nd grade teachers for organizing 2nd grade Demon Day. Thank you to all of the parent volunteers who supported this special morning of inquiry!

 
WALK TO SCHOOL DAY
May 17

Bassett's spring Walk to School Day is Friday, May 17. Walk to School Day is a fun way for your child to start the day with some fresh air and extra time with friends! Parents are encouraged to participate too!

Here is how you can participate:

Walk with your child to school.    -OR- 

Meet at the south end of the parking lot at St. Ladislas Church (2345 Bassett Rd) starting at 7:35 am and walk as a group with Bassett's Physical Education teacher, Mr. O'Doherty.
  • Parents are encouraged to walk with your child, but drop-off is permitted.
  • The group will leave the parking lot promptly at 7:50 am and arrive at Bassett at 8:00 am.

FIELD DAY
May 31

Bassett's annual Field Day is  Friday, May 31. Field Day is a fun, outdoor event for our kids and we need lots of parent volunteers
 
Volunteers
Sign up to help hereWe have 25 different activities planned for the kids and each of those stations needs 1-2 volunteers. 

Volunteer  shifts are as follows:

9:00 am-10:45 am:
-3rd & 4th grade 
-Mrs. Diso/Mrs. Morris's class
9:00 am-2:00 pm:
All Day Volunteers
Lunch will be provided for all day volunteers.
12:00 pm-1:45 pm:
-1st & 2nd grade
-Ms. Obral's class
-Mrs. House's class

The school supply kit sale for 2019-202 0 is going on now! Once again, we are partnering with Cleveland-based company,  1st Day School Supplies , for our sale. 

Ordering through 1st Day School Supplies is convenient and easy! Kits contain all general classroom supplies requested by the teachers from each grade.
