Addressing Opioid Addiction Through Collaborative Patient Care
Like most diagnoses, substance use disorder (SUD) is rooted in a number of different factors: genetics, behavioral health, and environmental influences all impact a patient’s relationship with prescription opioids.
But often times, physicians are so focused on controlling opioids—monitoring prescriptions through PDMP programs, reevaluating prescribing practices, and implementing regulations—they miss out on collaborative care opportunities that could increase the effectiveness of these other initiatives.
Mat-Su Regional Medical Center used a combination of PDMP integration, care guidelines and collaboration facilitated through the Collective Medical Platform to reduce prescription opioid use 79.36% while maintaining positive patient satisfaction rates. Read the full

Air Methods’ HEAVEN Criteria published in leading trauma care textbook
Clinicians from Air Methods, a global leader in emergency air medical services, developed and published a life-saving trauma-care prediction tool in
Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS)
, a textbook for the CE program from
NAEMT
. The HEAVEN Criteria is now established as the gold standard process for airway management and will save lives in prehospital emergency settings.
HEAVEN—which stands for Hypoxemia, Extremes of size, Anatomic abnormalities, Vomit/blood/fluid, Exsanguination and Neck mobility—was developed by Air Methods’ clinical education manager David Olvera, NRP, FP-C, CMTE, and medical director Daniel Davis, M.D. The criteria serve as a quick and easily understood checklist for emergency clinicians to help them predict a complex tracheal intubation.
