TEACHER OF THE MONTHTOTM
Congratulations to Dr. Marianne Campbell for being named May Teacher of the Month!
This is her teaching philosophy: If we are successful as educators, our students go on to lead fulfilled lives outside the walls of our school, beyond our supportive community. While my curricula rightly call on me to teach strategies, skills, analysis, and critical thinking, I try not to lose sight of the fact that I am teaching human beings. What I have learned is that the behaviors of successful people are also in our purview to teach. I believe mastering effective work habits has a greater impact on success and well-being than being able to recall every concept from a particular class five years hence. In addition to teaching science and communication to high school students, I have had the privilege of teaching microbiology to non-traditional nursing students, scientific writing to first generation ESOL college sophomores, and reading to a hard-working immigrant simultaneously becoming literate in English and her native language. All had a vision of who they wanted to be. Where they differed was whether, deep down, they believed it was possible. Some come already convinced from other life experiences that they don't have what they need to make it. Otherwise capable students can sabotage their progress with self-doubt and uneven work habits. I consider my most important job to be helping students to fill their toolboxes with the strategies to get through any academic class on the way to their chosen career. To that end, I teach the strategies of time management, perseverance, and self-discipline. Instead of merely chunking their assignments, I describe to students in detail the routines of how, in high school, I balanced my own challenging course-load with multiple time-consuming extracurricular activities and a job. I make and promote long-term schedules, explain the process of how I sought tutoring in college, and disclose that I wasn't prepared to take calculus until after high school. The majority of my day is spent teaching a subject that I had to work very hard to master in high school. I'm not shy in sharing with students that I've personally made each mistake they have made and held every misconception on my way to understanding. While I am tasked with making the concepts I teach look easy to inspire confidence, real learning takes place only during and after students try to solve step-by-step problems independently. Every day, I try to teach my students that learning happens as a result of trying and making these mistakes, not in spite of them. I firmly believe what inspirational speaker and writer Marvin Phillips once said, "The difference between try and triumph is a little "umph." Sustained effort is an integral part of true achievement.
PROFESSIONAL OF THE MONTHPOTM

It is obvious she loves what she does. It is also obvious that parents and the community love her and the work she does for our students.

Congratulations to the award winners in the 2018 Medusa Mythology Exam, The International Competition For Mythology Enthusiasts. The Medusa Exam is open to public, private, and home-school students. Public or private school students must be in the 6th grade or higher; home-school students must be eleven years old. The Exam's content rotates through a three-year theme cycle: 1st = Olympians 2nd = Monsters and evil-doers 3rd = Heroes The 2018 Exam theme was "Where have all the heroes gone?" dealing with the travels, trials, and tribulations of the great and not-so-great heroes of Greek myth. Because each Exam covers a specific topic from within the cycle, students who take the Exam for more than one year find that they build a deep knowledge of mythology.
