St. Michael's Academy

We're coming down the home stretch everyone! Today we sent home the last progress report of the year (Yippee!), and after reviewing them, they certainly reflected that typical "crawl to the finish line" kind of look. We've got a few more weeks to go. Homework, study, bedtimes, behavior, still matter! Hang in there! You can make it!
In our faith, May is the traditional time for First Communions. Many of our students are receiving the Eucharist for the first time this month and on Monday, we'll celebrate with them at our school Mass at 9:30 a.m. Sharing in the Eucharist joins us most fully to Christ and to the Church. Please join us as we welcome these children to the table of the Lord.
I hope all of our mothers enjoy a blessed and happy Mother's Day! Enjoy a great weekend.

Pray The Rosary
Do you have a half hour between 8:30 and 9 a.m. on Tuesday mornings? If so, we invite you to join other parents during this half hour to pray the rosary for our school, students and faculty. What a great way to start your day!

From The Classroom of Mrs. Rowland - Gr. 1

1A Watches Changes Before Their Eyes
Mrs. Rowland's first graders have welcomed six "Very Hungry Caterpillars" to 1A! Every day, we are watching them grow into beautiful butterflies.
As the students observe the "Very Hungry Caterpillars," they document the changes through their stages. The caterpillars came to the classroom in the second stage of development (as a caterpillar) and are currently entering the third stage called a chrysalis (cocoon). After emerging from the chrysalis they will rest for a while, and be set free flying away into their natural surroundings.
This life science project teaches our students about the life cycle, as well as how to observe animals as they grow and change.

Boston Science Museum Wows Grade 8
The Boston Museum of Science returned to St. Michael's Academy this past Wednesday presenting "Dynamic Earth" to the 8th grade class .
Through a generous grant from Mr. and Mrs. Powers, students were able to learn more about conduction, convection, and radiation. These three processes help heat the Earth and are integral parts of our daily lives. Students were shown how heat
transfers and thermal energy impacts our world. Emily, our presenter, demonstrated each of these concepts through a variety of experiments that powerfully illustrated the definitions she shared with our students.
This program was an extension of the science curriculum here at St. Michael's and enriched the knowledge base of our students.

Healthy Social Relationships
I thought it might be helpful to have a summary of Magic Jim's anti-bullying presentation to guide your continued work with your children to have successful social experiences. There was valuable information given to help all students know what to do if they experience or witness negative social interactions.
"Bully-Proofing Your School" summary of the 3/27/19 presentation by Jim Vagias:
-
Defined bullying
: The intentional and one-sided use of unequal power to intimidate, ridicule, harass, threaten and belittle someone else.
-
Types of bullying include physical, social (excluding), and verbal/internet.
-
Causes of bullying:
mostly unknown. Research tells that most people who exhibit bullying behavior either...A) like to exert power and can get away with it or B) have an inflated self-esteem.
-
The 3 roles of a bullying situation are the
target/victim
, the
bully/person causing harm
and the
bystander
(who usually does not act due to fear of retaliation)
-
In school most bullying occurs at recess, in the bathroom, at lunch, in the hallways or on the bus.
-
There are many consequences of bullying for all 3 roles in bullying situations including negative physical, mental, academic, legal and social effects. One statistic tells that if a person who bullies is not stopped, he/she is 60% more likely to have a criminal record by age 24.

What can be done
?
-
Tell children what bullying is NOT (arguments or disagreements)
-
Empower bystanders - "they are our best tools"
-
Notice changes in children's behavior (increased absence, decrease in grades, cease hanging out with peers, decrease personal hygiene, increase physical complaints, etc). May not be a symptom of bullying but take note and discuss with a School Counselor, School Nurse and/or Teacher.

Set aside time with your child to discuss things like...What does bullying mean? What does it mean to be a good friend? How can people help each other? How did someone help you? Discuss what IS and IS NOT bullying. Discuss tattling vs. telling-as Mortimor the bird taught them. Discuss bystander roles and how they can help others if they see them being harmed, discuss respecting differences in other people, etc.

- share what is happening with an adult. ( "discuss tattling vs. telling"-as Mortimor the bird taught them)

Use and teach humor statements to be used in a difficult situation...
Just keep saying "so" or "whatever" when someone is saying hurtful things.

Adults can tell their kids that the person who is saying hurtful things "is wrong," and they may be jealous or secretly just want to make you upset. Try to get the target to stop reacting.

It is important to share any concerns with your child's teacher to provide teamwork as the best support for all.

There's no time commitment and no volunteering - just show up when you can, for as long as you can. The girls have been working hard all season, and they'll complete their Final 5k on Sunday, June 2 at Springfield College with over 2,000 other runners.
Our
Practice 5k on May 17th
will help them to prepare for their final run. Please show your support for our SMA girls as they complete a 5k by running 9 laps around the school! They would love to see you cheer for them!!

Send In Your Loose Change!
Students from East Forest Park schools are joining community members in raising funds for the new East Forest Park Library through a coin drive. Please help by sending in your loose change and having your child deposit it into the banks located in each of the classrooms. All change donors will receive a bracelet that can be worn at school during the month of May! The best part?
Friends of the Springfield Library will match the total amount up to $5,000.
Keep sending in those coins hanging around your house! SMA students will certainly be taking advantage of the new library!

 On Friday, May 10th, Mt. Carmel invites you to an elegant Wine Tasting at the Springfield Country Club to benefit Mt. Carmel's Parish Center. The evening will include hors d'oeuvres, wine and pasta stations, dessert trays, amazing raffle prizes, live music, games and soft beverages.
