Message from Pastor Tim
Dear Friends and Members of Ark and Dove,

This last Sunday in church I mentioned the Community Foundation Of Anne Arundel County in my sermon.  The Foundation promotes philanthropy and provides grants to not-for-profit organizations in our county.  On a periodic basis, they do extensive research into the needs in our county and then produce a report called Poverty Amidst PlentyPoverty Amidst Plenty VI is subtitled, “On the Road to Progress gor All” and just was released about a month ago.  I commend this report to you and invite you to read it. (Or at least the summary, and then scan the report.) As you are a community and mission-minded church, this report will give you a detailed look at the challenges we face in our county. Follow this link to the homepage http://www.cfaac.org/ scroll down and there is a link to the report in the lower left corner.

Our stewardship theme this spring has been Linking Gratitude and Abundance. I want to thank the 71 households who have pledged to date. Each pledge is greatly appreciated. As we have over 150 family units in the church, we must consider ourselves still in the middle of a stewardship effort. Many households in our church are giving through electronic giving and the stewardship team tells me that they would like a pledge card even from those families who are continuing their generosity with electronic giving. Perhaps you have not had time to review all the stewardship information that has been sent to you.  This link will provide you with all our stewardship communications.

We hope you will review this information and pray about your level of support for our congregation.

Peace of Christ,

Pastor Tim

Fish Banks
Children and youth, please bring in your One Great Hour of Sharing fish banks, this Sunday, and place them aroun the comunion table!
Verse and Prayer
My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one will snatch them out of my hand. What my Father has given me is greater than all else, and no one can snatch it out of the Father’s hand. The Father and I are one. - John 10:27-30
Holy God, you have called a people to be your family out of every tribe, language, and nation, to love and serve you daily in a world of beauty, complexity, and diversity. Help us to honor and respect the dignity of difference as we seek to be one with you and each other this day and always. Amen.
The image of Christ as a shepherd has always been a lovely one, especially when times get hectic, and we feel lost in the daily busy-ness of our lives. The music chosen for this Sunday includes two settings that incorporate this idea: Victor Labenske's pastoral arrangement of Saviour, Like a Shepherd Lead Us and the choir's musical offering of a The King of Love, My Shepherd Is, a setting of the hymn over Bach's famous Prelude No. 1 in C Major from the Well-Tempered Klavier.

Peace,

Margaret

There's still time to join us for Brahms' German Requiem . We're having a men's sectional on Sunday at 10:35 in the Marshall Room and the regular rehearsals will take place on Thursdays at 8pm . We're very excited about this musical presentation on June 16th!
June 9th will be a special music Sunday. The band will lead service with all music composed by Hillsong United. We are excited to play some of their best worship songs, both musically and theologically. We are also considering a trip to see Hillsong perform at The Anthem in Washington D.C. on June 29. All are welcome to join; please email me with any interest.

Deacons' Corner
Deacons' Fund Giving: May 12
One of the annual special offerings at Ark & Dove is the Deacons Fund offering, which we accept any time during the year. If you receive offering envelopes there is a pink one in the box for this offering (May 12). The Deacons Fund enables us to help our church households through situations that arise during the year and require more than we have available in the annual ministry and mission budget. Providing a reception for a large memorial service is one example, but often the circumstances require privacy and therefore are not known to most of the congregation. The Board of Deacons is grateful for your contributions. Greg Makar, Moderator of Deacons, glmakar@juno.com.

ACT: Do Not Stand Idly By
What's Next
On Sunday, May 5, 2019, 165 people from ACT showed up at the Mt. Olive AME Community Life Center in Annapolis to learn about the Metro IAF Gun Violence reduction campaign,   Do Not Stand Idly By . County Executive Steuart Pittman, AA Co. Police Chief Tim Altomare, Deputy State’s Attorney Jessica Daigle, and Del. Alice Cain (D-30A) all committed to working with ACT to determine if and  how we can implement the steps  to join 136 jurisdictions nationwide to pressure manufacturers to act responsibly on guns.

The May 5 action was featured in The Capital Gazette: Anne Arundel group looks to gun manufacturers to address violence.

We are grateful to the national leadership of  Rabbi Joel Mosbacher , who gave a presentation on how Anne Arundel County and Annapolis can join this campaign, and the leaders from the Gun Violence Reduction Research Action Team, particularly Linda Mundy (Unitarian Universalist Church of Annapolis), Rev. Stephen Tillett (Asbury Broadneck UMC), Bishop Charles Carroll (New Creations Deliverance Ministries), Angel Crowdy (Weeping Moms), and Chevella King (Weeping Moms).

What’s next: ACT leaders will vote at our County-wide Steering Committee meeting on May 16, 7pm, on ACT’s endorsement of Do Not Stand Idly By. The gun violence research action team leaders will continue to meet with public officials on specific steps. Meetings have already happened with the County Executive and AA Co. Police offices. The Mayor of Annapolis has also requested a meeting with our team. Pending approval at steering, on June 13, 7pm, at our County-Wide Action on Housing and Gun Violence Reduction, we will ask our public officials to publicly sign on to Do Not Stand Idly By.

CAP Food Pantry Needs Our Help!
The CAP food pantry urgently needs volunteers to help carry food from the pantry to the clients’ cars on the second and third Thursdays of the month (3-5pm). CAP is the Christian Assistance Program, Inc., a group of about 13 churches, including Ark & Dove, that provides food and clothing to families in West Anne Arundel County. Ark & Dove helps sustain CAP through regular food donations, clothing donations, the annual Souper Bowl of Caring, and volunteers for CAP activities. This is the most physically demanding of the volunteer positions and requires repeatedly carrying bags/boxes weighing approximately 25-35 pounds up eight steps. For more information, or to volunteer, please contact Greg Makar (GLMakar@juno.com, 301-483-8255). Or contact Amy Gantt, CAP’s volunteer coordinator (aggantt2@aol.com, 410-733-6022).
Equipping the Saints
What's your temperament?
We all have different sets of personality traits, such as our communication habits, our patterns of action and our characteristic attitudes, values and talents. All of these add up to form our temperament and help shape how we interact with others.  Knowing your traits, and understanding your own strengths and challenges, can greatly improve how you interact with teams, co-workers and family. On Wednesday, June 5 , we will explore the Keirsey Temperaments Sorter and help you discover if you are a Guardian, a Healer, a Rational or an Artisan, as well as what each of these types mean. Cathy Debus will be leading the discussions. Dinner and fellowship start at 6:30 with discussions from 7:00 to 8:30. Childcare and special meals can be provided. See Steve Debus (steven.debus89@gmail.com) for more information.

Friendly Seniors Get Together!
It's been a while since we've gotten together! How about Sunday, May 19, 1:30 p.m. at M&M, the new restaurant in The Village? That way we can see what we want to do in the summer. Remember the Areys are willing to take us sailing in batches of 4! Do we want to picnic somewhere? Visit a brewery? See another play or concert? Bring your suggestions for summer into fall, please. Hope to see you then! Please let Joan Berry (410-672-5237, berry962@verizon.net ) know by Thursday, May 16 so she can make reservations.
Our Church Home
Help Needed!
The Facilities ministry is in deep need of team leaders and volunteers. It takes many hands to keep our facilities and property in adequate condition to host the many Ark and Dove , and outside group events every week.

  • Do you enjoy working outdoors? We need a Grounds Team leader to coordinate the mowing schedule, and work with volunteers to do regular maintenance for our flower beds and rain garden.
  • Do you have an interest in Security? The newly formed Safety and Security Team needs a leader to help coordinate an analysis of the property and create a structure for the team.
  • Do you want to help but don’t know where? All of the facilities teams could use more members.

If any of these opportunities interest you, or you would simply like more information, please contact Rob Yeager Facilities@arkanddove.org.
Fellowship Clean-up
If you attend the 11:00 service on Sundays and are willing to help clean up our fellowship snack table around 12:30 some weeks, please contact Nicole Howe (nicolehowe123@gmail.com). We'd really appreciate your service!

Dismantling Racism One Conversation at a Time
How do we "change the course of hate?" One way is to speak up when a friend, co-worker, family member, or church member says something that is explicitly or implicitly racist. So often we let it pass, because we don't know what to say. Due to implicit bias, sometimes white people don't even know that they are saying something racist, but it is important for them to have a chance to increase their awareness and consider the implications of their words. On  Tuesday, May 21st from 6-9 pm at Ark and Dove, we have an opportunity to learn the skills to engage in these conversations with a nationally recognized expert,  Dr. David Campt. Please register  here and invite your friends. First 15 can register using the code ARKANDDOVEMEMBER to receive a discounted ticket. Any questions, contact Linnie Girdner at girdnerlinda@gmail.com or 410-999-7892.
Help Needed for Hosting SURJ Training
On  May 21st from 6 - 9 pm we are providing space in our church for an important training called  Dismantling Racism: One Conversation at a Time, which is referenced above. The volunteers from the sponsoring organizations could use some Ark and Dove folks' help with directing parking, greeting, etc. Let's show what a welcoming church we are. Please let me know if you are interested by texting or calling me at 410-999-7892 or emailing me at  girdnerlinda@gmail.com. Thanks. Linnie
Anne and Emmett at Morgan State University
A group of Ark and Dove friends recently attended the play, Anne and Emmett, written by Janet Langhart Cohen. The play depicts an imaginary conversation between Anne Frank and Emmett Till, both teenagers who were killed because of racial persecution. The setting is in a place called “Memory,” an afterlife dimension where a spirit can exist as long as someone living remembers the story of their life. Anne has been in “Memory” since her death in the 1930s and is startled when Emmett violently arrives and disrupts her solitude. The young Morgan State student portraying Emmett skillfully made us feel the brutality of his beating and death at the hands of vengeful brothers in Mississippi in 1955 as he arrives in “Memory” writhing and jerking and then dying. There is awkward and defensive conversation between Anne and Emmett as Anne establishes where they are and Emmett tries to understand that he can only remain in “Memory” as long as he is remembered by the living.

The play is a conversation that establishes similarities between the racial hatred of Nazi Germany and the white supremacist intolerance of blacks in the South. The parallels are striking as each character relays the terror they faced as the history of each of their times impacted their safety and was the cause of their ultimate deaths. The main characters were supported by Anne’s father and Emmett’s mother, who each were the reason that we know about these two young victims. Anne’s father was the only survivor out of eight who lived in the attic annex before the Nazis located them. He made it his life’s work to publish Anne’s diary after the war, which is how most of us know her story. Emmett’s mother contacted every news agency, the NAACP, the FBI and every police station in the region in Mississippi after Emmett was kidnapped. After his murder, she defied the order to leave his coffin closed (a move by the racist sheriff to never allow anyone to see the brutality of Emmett’s murder). Emmett’s mother insisted that his funeral have an open casket so that the world would know what racial hatred did to her son. The case of Emmett Till was the beginning of the Civil Rights Movement.

The implications in our world today, Neo-Nazis, Alt-Right, and other hate groups is clearly apparent. We are the ones keeping Anne and Emmett in “Memory.” How will we ensure that the lessons of their stories guide us as we use our efforts to change the course of hate?
