LGBT+ Community Events

Apply for the Traub-Dicker Rainbow Scholarship! Deadline to apply is June 27! 

TDRS was established in 2004 to encourage and support women-identified lesbians in their quest for higher education to help meet the student's financial needs. The TDRS provides scholarships to women-identified lesbians from two categories: graduating high school students who plan on attending a recognized college or university in the United States, or already-matriculated college students in any year of study, including graduate school. The scholarship  will be used for tuition to a nonprofit college or university, and is paid directly to the recipient's school. Multiple scholarships between $1,500 and $3,000 will be awarded in early summer 2018 and are non-renewable.

Trans Youth-Apalooza

Youth Services at the Center is hosting Trans Youthapalooza 2018 on June 30
for ages 24 and under. This is a one day convention of workshops, give aways, support spaces, kids corner, free services like haircuts, clothing, and food. 

LGBTQ+ San Diego: Stories of Struggles and Triumphs
July 8, 2018-January 2020; 10:00AM-5PM
San Diego History Center

The San Diego History Center in partnership with the Lambda Archives of San Diego brings the first-ever exhibition in Balboa Park focused on the history of San Diego's LGBTQ+ community. Visitors will experience and learn about the struggles to overcome persecution, the battle with AIDS, bullying and intolerance, the power of the community, and the tremendous strides taken in the fight for equal rights. The exhibit curator is noted author and historian Lillian Faderman.

Exhibition runs: July 8, 2018 - January 2020.

Pride 5K Run and Walk

The annual charity Pride 5k Race and Walk is held along the Pride Parade route through Hillcrest and Balboa Park. The crowds begin to form at 
9:30  so you'll have lots of spectators and cheering to help you achieve your goals!  Participants will receive a beautiful, top-quality, short-sleeve shirt (available in men's and women's cuts). Coming Out Group

The Coming Out group is a place to meet and gain support while discussing your sexual and/or gender Identities in a confidential setting.  This group is for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, straight, or questioning folks who are coming out, considering coming out or may already be out.  Topics are determined by group participants and can include stress, fear, anxiety, loneliness, family/cultural issues, excitement and celebration with regard to coming out. The group is open to new members the first 3 meetings of each quarter and then closes to maintain safe space.

LATI 10: Reading North by South: Latin American Studies and the US Liberation Movements
Class offered Summer Session II!

Haven't fulfilled your DEI requirement yet? Take LATI 10, a class that will study the multilayered relations between Latin American Studies and US Liberation movements! Students will be exposed to a more nuanced and rich understanding of social movements, identity formation and political culture on both sides of the hemisphere. This class is offered Summer Session II. 

CGS 113: Gender and Sexuality in the Arts

Take CGS 113 for Summer Session 1! For this summer course, we will explore histories of art production - especially film, performance, photography, and sculpture - that imagine, stage, and critically re-invent representations of intersectional gender and sexuality. Students will encounter a broad range of artists and their work, and will be asked to create their own representations in various forms. The course will include regular film screenings, visits to local art events and museums, and experimental projects designed and produced by class members.


CGS 123: Gender and Reproductive Politics

Take CGS 123 for Summer Session 2! This course will examine historical and contemporary debates around issues such as abortion, birth control, surrogacy, fetal testing, and assisted reproductive technologies. Topics include the essentialization of women as reproducers; the relationship between the corporeal body and body politics; the fight for abortion/birth control; eugenics and coerced sterilization of poor, women of color; reproductive health "rights" and "choices;" and the effects of structural violence and inhumane conditions on reproductive health.
