2015 is coming to a close, and thanks to YOU, we were able to help a lot of people overcome the boundaries of living with a spinal cord injury. Let's take a look back at what we were able to accomplish together this past year....

As of December 18th, we've received 113 clients needing assistance. Our youngest client was 1 year old Emery and our oldest was 78 year old Martha. Emery was born with spina bifida and Martha has a spinal cord injury from a fall.
34% of our clients were injured in motor vehicle accidents
18% have spinal cord tumors causing paralysis
17% have the birth defect, spina bifida

Bev Olson and Outreach Volunteer, Barbara Martin, went to Parkland Hospital a few weeks ago to visit a new client and her brother, Tia and Beau. Beau reached out to NAF after Tia was injured in a car accident and they needed assistance to modify her home for her wheelchair before her discharge. Tia is the mother of 4 beautiful children aged 16 months to 11 years. We were so happy to help get Tia home and we received such a beautiful "thank you" fr
om Beau recently.

"Tia is progressing along well and thanks to the help, we are able to bathe her and get her into the bathroom without a problem. I literally do not know what I would have done without you. It is a miracle, one that I prayed for since the accident and God sent me an angel in the form of you and Bev, along with the other volunteers."
We're just so honored to have been able to help Tia and her family.
 In 2013, Patty was thrown from her horse and she injured her cervical vertebrae. Initially, NAF helped Patty with a custom shower chair so she could bathe independently. Since Patty has joined our family, we've kept in touch and visited her to check on her ongoing needs. NAF was recently able to provide a hand operated MOTOMED therapeutic exercise bike to Patty to help keep her legs from swelling and for the general health benefits. She was so excited when it finally arrived and she was able to use it. We're hoping the exercise will mean a healthy year in 2016!
Michael, age 41, is living with a T9 spinal cord injury sustained when a stack of wooden pallets fell on him. Michael had some pressure sores from sitting in his wheelchair and he desperately needed a more specialized cushion to heal his existing sores and prevent more. NAF provided Michael with a ROHO cushion which should ensure no further problems with pressure sores.

Call to Action
In 2015, we saw an increase in clients with spinal cord injuries from: gun shot wounds, spinal tumors and falls
We saw a decrease in motorcycle accidents over 2014 but some
unusual injuries increased this year - trampoline accidents, a slip-n-slide accident, ejection from a truck bed and our sweet Brooke who was injured in an ATV accident on her 18th birthday
There was an increase in requests for assistance to very young children under age 10 and they were:

We were so honored to be able to help Kiley and her family with an adaptive van but we still have more children waiting for help with vehicles so their parents can take them to doctor appointments and fun things like visits to the zoo or the mall.

Stephen, age 62, was in Baylor Grapevine hospital when his wife contacted NAF for assistance. Stephen has a tumor on his spine at his T6 which has caused paraplegia. Stephen needed a power wheelchair and NAF was lucky enough to have just had one donated to us. The power chair still had the tags on it and was virtually brand new with a value of approximately $25,000. NAF was honored to provide the chair to Stephen.
Tucker, age 18, is living with a birth defect of his spine and other serious disorders. His doctors ordered a bipap machine for his respiratory needs and his social worker contacted NAF to see if we could provide it for him. We were happy to provide the equipment to ensure Tucker's good health.
Jerry, age 50, is living with quadriplegia after a motocross accident. He needed specialized equipment for bathing which NAF was more than happy to provide to him as his insurance would not cover it. When he's ready, NAF will also be helping with his expenses to get to outpatient therapy so he can continue to progress. Within a few months, a state agency will help Jerry with this expense but we will fill in the gap until then.
Kimberly, age 13, is living with a serious birth defect of her spine and several other serious medical conditions. Her mother requested assistance in evaluating Kimberly for assistive devices that would help other people to understand her speech better and increase her independence. NAF provided an assistive technology evaluation last week and we'll be providing assistance with that equipment once it is prescribed.

Your $100 donation will help build a wheelchair ramp so we can get our clients out of rehab and through their front door at home.
Your $200 donation will help widen the doorways in their homes so their wheelchair can fit through the bathroom door. Insurance doesn't covers home modifications.
Your $500 donation will help provide life-changing medical equipment: wheelchairs and specialized shower chairs, etc. Most insurance only covers a small part of wheelchairs, if any, and no "bathing aids" are covered.
