TIFTON'S MR. PEANUT GETS HONOR MEDAL
FRANK McGILL RECEIVES UGA MEDALLION
Frank McGill , 92, of Tifton , who is affectionally known throughout the Georgia agricultural community as “Mr. Peanut,” received the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences’ (CAES) Medallion of Honor during a private event Thursday on the UGA Tifton campus.

The medallion is presented to an outstanding individual or couple in recognition of dedication to the college’s mission and for the time, advice, support and influence they have provided.

“Once in a generation , someone comes along who forever changes a segment of agriculture . When it comes to peanuts , Frank McGill is that person.  Scientists, farmers and even former U.S. President Jimmy Carter will tell you, without hesitation, that Frank McGill was extremely instrumental in developing the peanut industry in Georgia ,” said CAES Dean Sam Pardue , who presented McGill with the award.

“His wise counsel, steady advice and dedication to teaching the latest principles and production practices helped triple Georgia peanut yields , changing the economic future of Southwest Georgia , which now produces nearly half of the nation’s total peanut crop ,” Pardue said.

A Chula native, McGill has received many accolades during his long career, which began with UGA as a county agent in Southwest Georgia before becoming the state’s UGA Cooperative Extension peanut specialist . McGill , who worked at the Coastal Plain Experiment Station in Tifton , became a renowned peanut consultant worldwide , traveling to 21 countries to aid peanut production .

UGA has honored McGill as one of 12 scientists whose work has impacted the world .
Hundreds of folks came out Friday for the ice cream social and fireworks on UGA Tifton's front lawn.
UGA TIFTON MARKS FIRST CENTURY WITH CELEBRATION
A year-long celebration of the University of Georgia Tifton campus' centennial culminated Friday with speeches , a Centennial Garden dedication and a community ice cream social with fireworks on the front lawn .

Agriculture is Georgia’s No. 1 industry, and the UGA Tifton campus has played a vital role in helping our farmers build this industry and sustain its success,” said UGA President Jere W. Morehead .

Originally known as the Coastal Plain Experiment Station , UGA Tifton has been home to world-renowned scientists conducting cutting-edge agricultural research .

“This day of celebration is an opportunity to look in the rearview mirror and see what’s happened on our campus, but as scientists , we always have to be looking forward ,” said Assistant Dean Joe West . “May 3 is not an end; it really is a beginning .”

TIFT COMMISSIONER HUGHES NAMED
3rd VP OF GA COUNTY ASSOCIATION BOARD
Tift County Commissioner Melissa Hughes was recently sworn in as third vice president on the Association County Commissioners of Georgia (ACCG) Board of Managers.

Gov. Brian Kemp administered the oath to the new members of the ACCG executive board during the organization's annual conference at the Savannah Convention Center .

“I am humbly pleased and excited to fill my role as third vp of ACCG,” Hughes said. “Although I have been a public servant for the past 10 years, this position will allow me the opportunity to expand my public service not only in my community of Tifton-Tift County , but now, I have the honor to serve all 159 counties here in the great state of Georgia ."

In her role, Hughes will work other board members to lead the association on initiatives that include increasing county efficiencies , enhancing continuing education offerings and fostering strong relationships among counties, the state and federal governments .
NANCI BOWEN CHARITY GOLF TOURNAMENT SET FOR MAY 13
The annual Nanci Bowen Charity Event golf tournament will be held at Spring Hill Country Club in Tifton on Monday, May 13 . The tournament benefits special needs of Tift Regional Health System hospice and cancer patients

Morning and afternoon tee times are available. Dinner will be served in the afternoon for all players , along with an awards ceremony with prizes for the winning teams.

A Tifton native, Nanci Bowen is a retired Ladies Professional Golf Association tour player and tournament champion .

GA PEANUT COMMISSION
TO HOLD 'PEANUT PALOOZA'
The Georgia Peanut Commission will host a public kickoff to summer "Peanut Palooza" f rom 2-7 p.m. Friday, May 24, at the commission's office, 445 Fulwood Boulevard , Tifton.

The family-friendly event will include free boiled peanuts, fried peanut samples, Deb’s Curbside Cupcake truck and a special appearance from Mr. Peanut . The afternoon will also include a DJ , opportunities to plant your own peanut plant , prizes and giveaways, photo opportunities for kids to sit inside of a tractor, a bounce house and more.

The office will also be open extended hours to give attendees the opportunity to visit the gift shop and tour the building . The Peanut Commission building is one of only a few totally energy-efficient buildings in Tifton .

The commission represents more than 4,700 peanut farm families and conducts research, promotion and education programs.
PROGRAM MORE THAN JUST 'TALK'
The Tifton-Tift County Chamber of Commerce's "TALK" (Tomorrow’s Aspiring Leaders: Kids) Youth Leadership Class held its graduation last Wednesday at the UGA Tifton Campus Conference Center .

The class consists of eighth graders from Eighth Street Middle School, Northeast Middle School and Tiftarea Academy . The students participated in leadership activities throughout the year.

ABAC's Mike Chason provided the program Wednesday , and all students were awarded plaques .

The TALK program is sponsored by South Georgia Banking Co., Tift Regional Health System, Synovus, AT&T, Georgia Power, Colquitt EMC , and Heatcraft Refrigeration.

UGA TIFTON RECOGNIZES GRADUATES
The University of Georgia Tifton Campus recognized 19  College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences graduates at a special ceremony at the Tifton Campus Conference Center on Saturday .
 
Students who received their bachelor’s degrees include: Clair Jordan , Ocilla; Lucas Brock , Bowdon; Julia Gonzalez , Rincon; John Hancock , Alapaha; John Harrell , Donalsonville; Hannah Henry , Glenwood; William Henry , Colquitt; Robert Holden , Whigham; Dejanae Hooks , Covington; Troy Johnson , Lumber City; Joseph Jones , Pinehurst.

Students who received their master’s degrees include: Sydni Barwick , Boston; Colby Brown Jr., Fayetteville, N.C. ; Matthew Bruce , Lakeland; Samuele Lamon , Moniego Di Noale, Italy.

Students who will receive their bachelor’s degrees later this summer include: Douglas Mutert, Valdosta ; and Dalton West , Poulan.

Gurpreet Virk of Khanna, India , will receive a master’s degree later this summer .

SRTC NURSING STUDENTS GET 'PINNED'
Southern Regional Technical College (SRTC) held a pinning ceremony May 1 honoring four associate of science in nursing (ASN) students from the LPN to RN bridge program and the Generic ASN program on the Tifton campus .

The ceremony commemorates the students’ successful completion of their nursing coursework and clinical rotations . This class of nursing students will also participate in SRTC’s formal graduation ceremony and will be registered nurses (RN's) pending the passage of their board exams .

During the pinning ceremony , which symbolizes the rite of passage into the nursing profession, each student received a pin and lights a small lamp . The pin is used to remind students of their purpose to serve the sick and infirmed. The lighting portion of the ceremony serves as a tribute to Florence Nightingale , the founder of modern-day nursing.

At the ceremony, students were recognized for exceptional achievement : Heather Hudspeth was recognized with both the Tifton Leadership Award and the Highest Exit Exam Award . The Clinical Excellence Award was given to Amber Harper . The Nightingale Award recognized the accomplishments of Zoe Dean
