CAHEC Connection                                             May 2019

In This Issue

The 2019 CAHEC Partners Conference is fast approaching and we have some exciting things planned this year. Below is a short list to help you get prepared for an eventful two days of networking and industry updates.
  1. This year our Tuesday night dinner will be a 60's theme! We encourage attendees to dress the part in tie-dyed t-shirts and your favorite flower power garb. There will be food, music, and a photo booth for guests to capture life-long memories.
  2. We are bringing back the mobile app again this year! The conference agenda, speaker bios, and conference announcements will all be available in the palm of your hand. Be sure to watch your email for information on how to download the app before the conference.
  3. We will be on social media throughout the conference. Be sure to follow @CAHEC_Raleigh for Twitter updates and use #CAHECPC19 to join the conversation. You can also follow us on Facebook for conference updates.
  4. Our Partners Appreciation Luncheon will be held on Wednesday, June 5, at 12:15 PM. Join us as we recognize the hard work and achievements of this year's CAHEC Award recipients.
  5. Don't forget to check out the exhibitor hall during our networking breaks. The Partners Conference is a great time to network, reconnect with people, and make new contacts.

Last month, our partners at Mountain Housing Opportunities (MHO) in Asheville, NC, were awarded the Energy Innovator award from the Energy Innovation Task Force (EITF) for their outstanding work implementing energy saving efforts. MHO successfully enrolled 600 of their residents in the Duke EnergyWise Home program, which addresses the region's peak-energy problem by allowing Duke to cycle down energy use when the demand is at its highest. With initiatives like this in place, the Asheville community was able to push back the implementation of a gas-fired peaker plant - a facility that would have cost residential and business ratepayers more than $100 million - paid for through higher electricity bills.

"We are proud to be working in a community that takes energy conservation seriously," stated Cindy Weeks, Vice President & Director of Community Investment for MHO. "The Chair of the Buncombe County Commission, Brownie Newman, initiated the EITF as a collaboration with Duke Energy and other partners.  Brownie has more than 20 years of history working hard in the state of North Carolina to reduce carbon emissions and utilizing alternative energy when possible. At the same time, Brownie is a strong proponent of affordable housing, so this collaborative process was a winner. As all of us know, low-income households are often the most efficient users of electricity because they trim their electrical use for budgetary reasons. Providing our residents with other ways to save was a win-win as well."

We're excited to introduce two new members of our Acquisitions team!

Martin Yeager (left) joined CAHEC at the end of April as our new Acquisitions Analyst. He recently graduated from UNC Chapel Hill with dual masters degrees in Public Administration and City & Regional Planning. Martin extensively focused on public investment to promote inclusive and sustainable communities, including his capstone center focused on North Carolina's Qualified Allocation Plan. In addition to internships and research assistant positions during graduate school, Martin worked with Carolina Living and Learning Center, a facility that provides housing and life skill programs for special needs adults.

Joe Erdelyi (right) joined CAHEC earlier this month as our new Manager, Risk Management. He is a 31 year veteran of the LITHC industry and most recently served as the Director of Development for the Vermont Housing Finance Agency. Joe's experience includes overseeing and underwriting approximately $150 million in short-term financing, $60 million in permanent financing, and $220 million in LIHTC allocations. Joe is also experienced in collaborating with other state agencies and will be able to use the same approach while working with CAHEC's sydication team.

Greg Mayo, Vice President, Acquisitions & Risk Management, is proud of his team's expansion. "Martin's passion for inclusive and sustainable communities is a great fit with CAHEC's mission, and Joe's knowledge of the LIHTC program will be a huge asset for CAHEC and our partners."

Please join us in welcoming Martin and Joe to the CAHEC family!
