As you will see from this newsletter, April was a very busy month. Thank you for staying so engaged in the community awareness programs, thriving student service events and much more.
The last push of the semester is upon us and everyone begins to look a little harried as they prepare for finals, grades and commencement. Take time to step outside, take a breath, and enjoy these brief spells of sunshine that spring has ushered in.

Advising Days a Success!
Registration numbers for summer and fall are ahead of last year's thanks to a successful Advising Days. Faculty participation was increased from last year, and community partners, free t-shirts, Italian Ice and popcorn really helped draw students in. Thank you to everyone who made the event a success.

 2nd Annual Lavender Graduation
On Thursday, April 18, Three Rivers held the second annual Lavender Graduation, honoring students including Hannah Cianciolo, Kinsley Green and Elise Sperry. President Jukoski and Dean Farinelli spoke and honored the LGBT+ students and their allies.
The keynote speaker, Glen Pannell, encouraged students to stand up for their beliefs. And, on behalf of the Sexual Identity and Gender Minority Advocates student organization, Hannah Cianciolo presented Professor Philip Mayer with the outstanding LBGT Advocacy Award for his support to the student organization.

Emeriti Class of 2019 Honored
The Three Rivers community gathered on April 12 to celebrate the Emeriti Class of 2019. Professor Robert Niedbala gave a history of a the college and introduced the
new emeriti: Arthur Braza, Irene Clampet, Christine Hammond, G. Kent Harding, Matthew Hightower (posthumous), and Patricia Sauter.

Vets Connect offered resources for Military, Veterans and Community
Sharon Lincoln did an excellent job organizing Vets Connect, the annual veterans resource fair, a one-stop event for jobs, education, health services, networking and more. It took place on April 10 and included 40 organizations and 20 yellow-ribbon colleges.

April 12 Luncheon Celebrates Three Rivers Women
In honor of Women's History Month, the Equity and Diversity Committee celebrated women at Three Rivers who have made a difference within the TRCC community, contributed to the greater community of southeastern Connecticut, or had received an award or recognition.

Senior Night Draws Big Crowd
Over 170 people attended Senior Night. The recruitment event featured presentations on counseling and accommodation services, financial aid, transferring to a 4-year school, and an opportunity to meet the faculty. Great job, Student Services!

Manufacturing Pipeline News
$1.3 million in funding for equipment purchases and modifications has been approved for the new Three Rivers Manufacturing Apprentice Center at Grasso Tech.
Electric Boat has also received an eight million dollar grant for job training, which will benefit Three Rivers as Electric Boat's main training source.
The Welding 9 class just finished.
Since the inception of the program, there have also been 10 Design Drafting classes, 3 Outside Machinist classes, and 3 Intro to Manufacturing classes graduating 460 students in the past three years. Our students have a 95% job placement rate.

Three Rivers Receives 2019-20 Shared Governance Award
The 2018-19 CSCU Shared Governance Award was conferred upon Three Rivers Community College by the Board of Regents and the Faculty Advisory Committee. The award recognizes Three Rivers new shared governance model for fostering an environment of open discourse, transparency and reflection.
The governance award was created in April of 2016, and Three Rivers is only the second organization to receive it.

Nursing and Mathematics Faculty Present at "The Future of Public Higher Education in Connecticut" Conference
Three Rivers faculty made two presentations on the 5th annual Future of Public Higher Education in Connecticut Conference. Professor June Decker presented "Why can't Johnny learn Math? An introduction to the math education methods of Jo Boaler." Director of Nursing and Allied Health Edith Ouellet, and Assistant Professor of Nursing Carol Emmerthal presented, "Interprofessional health education (IPE) in the community: A collaborative partnership," along with three other colleagues.

Congratulations to the Three Rivers NASA Space Grant Quadcopter Challenge Team!
Five Three Rivers students and their faculty advisor, Yevhen Rutovytskyy, competed in the NASA Space Grant Quadcopter Challenge and tied for first place! This was only the
second year that Three Rivers participated in the event. E
ach team member put in between 80 and 100 hours of work into the drone.
The challenge consists of each team building and learning to fly a basic quadcopter from a kit. Students then modify their kits, mounting sensors, actuators, and electronics necessary for the challenge. This involves mechanical design and fabrication, and gave the students experience with computer-aided design software, 3-D printing, and laser cutting

Dorothy Lewis Endowment Fund
The Foundation is pleased to announce that Ms. Dorothy Lewis, class of 1978, has established the Dorothy Lewis and Family Scholarship Endowment Fund for $15,000. The endowment will support non-traditional students and help them achieve their educational goals. Dorothy is an active member on campus with the Adventures in Life Long Learning.

New Alumni Spotlight
The foundation has created an Alumni Spotlight that will feature a new Three Rivers alumnus every month. The first to be featured is Ashley Hanson, who enrolled as a non-traditional student and went on to earn two associate degrees and a certificate.
Community Foundation pledges $30,000 to Three Rivers College Foundation
The Community Foundation
pledged $30,000 ($10,000 over three years) to the Three Rivers College Foundation to support environmental research, fieldwork, and hands-on-learning internship opportunities for Three Rivers students in STEM disciplines. The project targets first generation and historically underrepresented students, many of whom are women and working non-traditional adults. It will help to increase their enrollment, retention, and graduation rates in STEM programs. Many thanks to Professor Diba Khan Bureau for her hard work and effort in securing funding for this important project.
Empty Bowls Fundraiser raises $1343
The Empty Bowls Fundraiser for St. Vincent de Paul Place Soup Kitchen and Food Pantry took place on April 11 at Three Rivers and was a magnificent community and college event.
Annual donations made by the Three Rivers Foundation and other community organizations, businesses and individuals make the fundraiser possible and ongoing.
