Mark your calendar for Friday, July 20 for the Akron RubberDucks Tailgate and Baseball Game with fireworks!
President's Message

About 20 hearty souls convened at Thirsty Dog, near the former Burkhardt Brewery, for our May Spouses and Friends social event. We traveled in Lolly the Trolley and visited two public houses in the historic district of downtown Akron. These traditional buildings house modern brewing equipment with nostalgic flavor. We first toured the new Akronym Brewing Company, across the street from Crave on East Market Street. Then we headed to the old Swinehart Rubber Company building on N. Howard Street at North Street, now transformed into apartment flats and the Lock 15 Brewing Company. We had good brews to sample and good food to share.

FYI, your Akron-Canton Section is participating with ASCE National to distribute the Dream Big DVD to every high school and middle school in the United States. This DVD informs students about important work engineers do and encourages young people to become engineers. We set aside over $500 to purchase enough DVDs for every middle and high school in our eight-county section and hope these DVDs will inspire the next generation of civil engineers.

This summer, look for events to participate in with your ASCE friends, such as the picnic hosted by the University of Akron Student Chapter followed by a RubberDucks baseball game at Canal Park.

I hope everyone has an enjoyable summer.

OCIT 3 Drop Shaft

Rack 16 Diversion Structure

The OCIT 3 site sits between West Exchange Street and West Cedar Street along the Ohio & Erie Canal. It marks the southern most point of the Ohio Canal Interceptor Tunnel. A 45-foot diameter drop shaft is being constructed that will connect with the tunnel at a depth of 166 feet.  The Contractor continues work at the OCIT 3 Drop Shaft. Are you a Civil Engineer Interested in Becoming a Professional Surveyor?

The University of Akron College of Applied Science and Technology recently developed a Certificate of Surveying for Civil Engineers consisting of six web-based and online courses. This certificate is for those engineers with an EAC/ABET-accredited B.S.C.E. degree who wish to be eligible for eventual registration as a Professional Surveyor.

The six required courses that make up the certificate are designed to meet the academic content and minimum ORC requirements of 16 semester hours in the required subject areas. The graduate would be responsible to also meet and document the experience requirement before qualifying fully for the PS exam in Ohio.

The University has an ambitious schedule of classes planned for the upcoming 8-week summer sessions. All six of the certificate classes are planned for summer offerings. Typically, the University also offers three classes in the fall and three in the spring semester as well. Enrollment officially begins in mid-March.
