As chief resident at Georgetown, Susan Hingle, MD, was motivated to advocate for her patients. Decades later, Hingle will tell graduating students how they can make a difference in their patients' lives at the Georgetown University School of Medicine commencement ceremony.

The Catholic, Jesuit tradition of alleviating suffering inspired Joan Rosenhauer, the School of Nursing & Health Studies commencement speaker, to become the first woman to lead the Jesuit Refugee Service/USA.

Kenny Lin, MD, MPH, a professor of clinical family medicine at the School of Medicine, has been appointed to the Advisory Committee on Breast Cancer in Young Women (ACBCYW) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).The ACBCYW helps the CDC develop evidence-based approaches to advance understanding and awareness of breast cancer among young women.

The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) presented its inaugural award for Excellence in Kidney Transplantation to Matthew Cooper, MD, at its 2019 Spring Clinical Meeting this weekend. Cooper is a professor of surgery at the School of Medicine and the director of Kidney and Pancreas Transplantation at the MedStar Georgetown Transplant Institute. He is a pioneer in the laparoscopic donor nephrectomy procedure and in the field of Paired Kidney Exchange (PKE) and conducts critical work to remove barriers for living organ donors.

Yasmin Zuch (NHS'20), a human science major at the School of Nursing & Health Studies, has received a Udall Undergraduate Scholarship from the Morris K. Udall and Stewart L. Udall Foundation to pursue her interest in improving health and well-being for Native Americans. Learn more here.

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) has renewed Georgetown Lombardi's designation as a "comprehensive cancer center," a distinction first awarded to Georgetown Lombardi in 1974. In addition, the NCI approved Georgetown Lombardi as a research consortium, reflecting a fully integrated cancer research enterprise with John Theurer Cancer Center, part of Hackensack Meridian Health in New Jersey.

 




How law can be used to advance global health care rights is the subject of a study released by a recently created commission comprising the Law Center's O'Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law, and The Lancet journals. The Legal Determinants of Health: Harnessing the Power of Law for Global Health and Sustainable Development, makes an innovative case for the power of law to improve health and challenge the status quo.
