A Message from the Principal

Lovejoy HS News 05 13 19

P arents and Guardians,

We had a great week of EOC and AP testing last week.  Both students and staff worked hard, were flexible, and truly did an awesome job.  Although EOC tests are complete, we continue with AP testing this week and give our last set of exams on Friday. I know it can be a stressful and difficult time for students and teachers, but they have done a fantastic job preparing all year.  I look forward to exam scores being posted and students getting to see their hard work pay off.

With graduation less than three weeks away, there are still lots of activities going on at LHS. Please take a few minutes to read through the email below for important upcoming events and dates.

Sincerely,

Chris Mayfield
Principal
Lovejoy High School

NEW! Medications at School
If your child has medicine at school, please make sure your child has exactly enough medicine to finish the school year. You are responsible for picking up any extra medicine as the school district has a policy against sending medicines home with students. At the end of this school year, any remaining medicines, including inhalers, will be thrown out. The school cannot store these for you during the summer. Some of these medications may not have been picked up after a field trip.

Please remember, if your child is going to continue being medicated at school during the 2018-2019 school year, you will need to complete a new medication sheet at that time and bring a SMALL or travel size bottle of medicine that is not expired.

Important News from Student Nutrition Regarding Student Meal Accounts
This is a courtesy message from Lovejoy Student Nutrition Services to inform households of an upcoming change in student meal accounts. In an effort to minimize negative balances at the end of the school year, beginning Wednesday, May 8 and for the remainder of the school year, students will no longer be able to charge meals which will result in the student incurring a negative balance to their meal account. Students may continue to use their lunch accounts as long as they have money in the account. Households with students who currently have negative balances will receive reminder emails and phone calls. Federal regulations prohibit us from rolling over negative balances to the next school year. Please make arrangements to remit payment for any negative lunch accounts your child may have incurred.

All positive balances will be rolled over to next school year. If you have a graduating senior, funds may be transferred to any sibling in the school district. To request a meal account refund, please complete a refund request form located on the Student Nutrition website. For assistance, please contact Student Nutrition at 469.742.8041.

Student Nutrition Services thanks you for your understanding and for allowing us to serve your student(s) this school year.

ILPC State Convention

The Red Ledger and Lovejoy News Network recently won a number of awards in state competition at the Interscholastic League Press Conference Spring Convention in Austin.

The Red Ledger was one of only two online newspapers in Texas to receive ILPC's highest honor, the Gold Star. It was the third consecutive Gold Star for the newspaper and the fifth in six years. Both LNN and TRL also received the organization's top rating, the Award of Distinguished Merit.

The Red Ledger also totaled 34 online Individual Achievement Awards (IAAs) in class 5A, more than any other online paper in that classification. Each school is allowed to submit up to two entries per category for the contest. The Red Ledger placed in 23 of 24 categories entered, with both entries placing in 11 different categories.

The Red Ledger took the gold medal in five categories, 12 silvers, seven bronzes, and nine honorable mentions.

Three of the gold medalists also won for Tops In Texas as they were named the overall champion of that category across all first place winners in the state from all classifications, middle school to 6A. Tops in Texas winning entries will be compiled in a book to be distributed statewide next year.
Tops in Texas winners were:
The Lovejoy News Network totaled six broadcast IAAs in the highly competitive 5A-6A division, totaling three silver medals and three bronzes.

ATPI Imagemakers

Juniors Kelsey Carroll and Grace Nguyen were two of 10 student photographers in the state of Texas named to the Association of Texas Photography Instructors Texas Imagemaker team.  They are the first two Lovejoy HS students to make the exclusive team which the ATPI website describes as "the top ten students in the state based on awards received in state and national photo contests during the current school year."
