Dear Patrons, Members and Subscribers,
We hope everyone has been out enjoying some of the warmer days as we continue to move into Spring! We also hope you are thinking about coming to enjoy the museum as we get ready to finish the month strong and jump headlong into May!
At the end of the month we will host a HUGE day for our military kids as our way of honoring The Month of the Military Child. April 29, at 10 AM, we'll kick off KidFUNFest at the museum. We've got something for kids of all ages, from interactive mazes, educational projects, arts, crafts, performers and a HAPPINESS parade around the museum where your littles are encouraged to dress up in whatever costume they'd like to participate! As many know, military kids have a hard time sometimes as Mom or Dad, or both, are gone on long training missions and deployments. They are also uprooted often and are charged with leaving their old friends behind and having to make new friends. Help us come out and celebrate these tough kids during KidFUNFest!
We are also very excited as Honor Flight San Diego embarks on another trip to Washington, DC to bring veterans to visit their memorials and thank them for their service and sacrifice. There are 65 WWII veterans and 15 Korea era veterans on the trip and you are invited to give them the heroes welcome they deserve. If you'd like to be part of the Welcome Homecoming on May 6th, read below.
This week is National Volunteer Week and we could not do what we do without our volunteers. They truly keep the museum running and the doors open. So THANK YOU to all our wonderful volunteers!

Balboa Park comes together to celebrate the Month of the Military Child with KidFUNFest!
April 29 10 AM - 4 PM
This month we are proud to celebrate the Month of the Military Child with a FUN packed day of arts, education, entertainment and more! Join us April 29 for KidFUNFest! We have partnered with many other museums and organizations to provide a day with more fun than you can imagine!
Take a crack at being an artist with a wide array of arts and crafts or enjoy one of our many performances to include jazz music, poetry and big band music! We've also partnered with museums such as The Museum of Man and The Museum of Photographic Arts, who will provide fun interactive activites for kids and adults alike! We'll also offer plenty of educational activities, an interactive maze and a special visit from BEAM, the Mobile Telepresence robot! This inovative robot will be on hand to connect military p
arents and kids who are currently seperated due to service.
Right now we are on the lookout for those who would like to take advantage of BEAM. Are you a kid

o would like to use a robot to contact Mom or Dad while they are away?

As most know, being a military kid can be tough. It's hard to say goodbye to Mom or Dad for long periods of time as they fulfill their duty to serve our great country. They are also subject to having to move often as parents go from duty station to duty station. Although it can be tough, miltitary kids learn to be strong through it all. This month help us celebrate the resilience and pride of our community's military kids!

Love Your Gut: The Story of Your Microbiome shares importance of gut health!
A big thanks to Staci Joy, author and Certified Holistic Public Health Nurse for her presentation, "Love Your Gut: The Story of Your Microbiome" at the museum on April 5.
Staci Joy's presentation shared the ways in which your gut health is connected to the proper function of the entire rest of the body!

Donation: World War II Posters from 1943
The VMBP has added 3 new posters to its collection thanks to the generous donation of
Dana Denson.
Issued from the U.S. Go
vernment Printing Office in 1943, these art works
address 3 of the great
hemes of WWII posters: Sacr
ifice, Service and Secrecy.

Keep a lookout for upcoming military poster exhibit and learn how you can help!
The VMBP has a growing collection of military posters. We are currently planning a new Military Posters Exhibit for later this year or early 2019. This will be the first time many of these amazing posters have been on display here at the VMBP. This will be the first time these posters have ever been on display.
To be displayed, each fragile poster requires archival quality protective acid
free sheeting and matting at a cost of $50-$100. You can be a vital partner with the mus
eum in making this exhibit happen. Look for photos of all our posters in the next coming weeks on our Facebook Page. Find a poster that touches you personally or the service of a family member, and sponsor it in honor or in memory of your loved one. Sponsorship can be in-full or in-part. No giving amount is too small or too large!

Honor Flight San Diego Homecoming
May 6 at 2 pm
Let's give these heroes the homecoming they may not have received when they returned him from WWII and Korea!
Honor Flight San Diego will be returning from their "Tour of Honor" on Sunday, May 6. The flight
will return from Washington, DC at 2 pm to Terminal 2 baggage claim. There will be 1,000 people wearing red, white and blue, waving American flags, saluting these men and women and welcoming them home.
On this flight are 65 WWII veterans and 15 Korean era veterans. There are men and women from every branch of service, bronze star recipients, men who served behind enemy lines, former POW's and 4 Marines who survived the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir.

We will need men and women in uniform to "man the rails" and as honor detail as the veterans deplane. Interested members can check-in with Gary (in Honor Flight shirt) when they arrive.

Do you know a female Marine who served aboard Camp Pendleton?
If you you served there between 1943 and today's date,
we want to hear from you.
In celebration of the 75th Anniversary of Women Marines at Camp Pendleton, the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce, along with the Camp Pendleton Historical Society, is planning the production of a commemorative publication marking this historic milestone for trailblazing women. Members of Chapters CA-2 and CA-7 of the Women Marines Association will assist in this endeavor.
Everyone has a story to tell and who better to tell yours than your sister Marines. So, let us hear from you. Send us photos and memorabilia along with a written description of your assignments and experiences while at Camp Pendleton. We have editors to assist you with the final product and a photographer who will take photos and scan items for you. Your article must meet with your approval before it is published.
Let's remember those who have come before us and recognize those who are yet to come.
On Saturday, April 21, from 9 am to 5 pm, the
San Diego County Chapter and Oceanside Chapter of Women Marines Association will be having an open house at Veterans Village of San Diego to learn about the Association and to bring your stories, items for the Commemorative publication of our story at Camp Pendleton. There will be photographers, writers to assist you with your stories.

VMBP "Speakeasy" Volunteer Appreciation Dinner
May 24 at 6-9 PM
Join us at the museum for an old-fashioned "speakeasy" as we honor our museum volunteers for 2017! Without our volunteers, we would not be as successful a
s we are. The event starts at 6 PM on Thursday, May 24 and will include a Taco Feast and a special concert by Westwind Brass.
All volunteers that register will get a free meal and drink, with their families receiving a meal at a reduced price. Those who are not a volunteer or a volunteer's family member may still attend the concert and get a meal for just $14.72 (meals automatically come with this price).
The dinner is a 1920's inspired "speakeasy" and attendees are encouraged to even dress in 20's inspired attire! We are so thankful for our volunteers, and look forward to providing all with a night of food, dancing and live band music!

USS Midway Veterans Wreath Ceremony on Saturday, May 26 at 9 AM
Join us for a patriotic and inspirational Veterans
Wreath Ceremony!
This event will honor veterans from World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War & the Global War on Terrorism.
There will be a special acknowledgement of the 65th anniversary of the Korean War.
This free event will feature:
- Featured Speaker, RADM Yancy Lindsey Commanding Officer, Navy Region Southwest
- A flyover
- Retired Veterans and Heroes in attendance
- Audience participation
- The tossing of biodegradable wreaths over the ship
- The live sounds of Taps
This event is free to the public and admission to the museum following the ceremony is included for Wreath Ceremony attendees arriving before 9:30 am.

Free food distribution on April 28 at 10 am
Courage to Call in conjunction with Feeding America is doing a free food distribution twice a month for all active duty, veterans, guard, reservists and their families. It is always the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month at locations throughout San Diego County.
