President's Message - Karen Miller, CFP®, CPFA
Karen Miller
Hello & Welcome to Spring!

2019 is off to a busy start for FPANC. We have had three interesting and well-attended chapter meetings already covering an Economic Update, Death and Taxes and finally, the latest thinking from MIT's Age Lab. If you enjoyed these meetings, please join us on May 10 th for How to Recruit and Compensate Top Talent. It's a great way to learn a few things, chat with your colleagues and meet new people.

This is an exciting time to be a part of our profession and to that end we are working with CSU, Sacramento and their School of Business. We are lucky to have a university in our own backyard with an accredited program that provides students with the educational requirements needed to sit for the CFP exam. Here is an update on our January meeting with CSUS. We are going to start by focusing on four initiatives:
  1. Creating a strong connection between students and practitioners by increasing interactions such as students attending FPA meetings and FPA participating in campus events (such as Financial Planning Days on campus).
  2. Creating a strong mentoring program **There is still time to sign up to be a mentor or agree to be interviewed by students in the CSUS Capstone course.
  3. Creating a strong internship program
  4. Creating awareness of the profession initiative - working with the School of business to have a strong social media presence to share resources, happenings, and celebrations of all the activity being generated.

President-Elect - Landon Tymochko, MBA, CFP®
Hello, and welcome to spring! There has been a lot happening in the Financial Planning Association recently. As I'm sure many of you are aware, and many of you have been following closely the developments with the OneFPA Network Initiative. As with any major organizational initiative, there are many varying perspectives and opinions, and some of the discussions I've seen have been quite heated. Remember, we are members of this organization to help ourselves and our profession to grow and improve our businesses and our client's lives. Please remember to be professional and supportive of the process, even if you don't agree with the outcome of the decision.

On another note, you'll want to know that the CalSavers Retirement Savings Program is now officially launching. This is the State of California's program that attempts to address the fact that many employees don't have access to an employer sponsored retirement plan. According to the roll out plan, by June 2022 all small businesses with 5 or more employees will be required to either have an employer sponsored plan (i.e. SIMPLE, SEP, 401k) or create a CalSavers account for them. Obviously, this has potentially significant implications for our small business clients, so you should start the conversation now. If you'd like more information, I encourage you to visit the CalSavers website at www.calsavers.com.

Lastly, I'd like to thank everyone who joined me for the first 2019 Study Group. And a particular thank you to Claudia Kane for providing us the case study, which focused on a divorcing couple. We all learned a lot about the nuances of helping clients going through a divorce. I hope you can join us at the next one scheduled on Wednesday, June 19th at Launi Cooper's office.

While we aren't meeting in April because of the conflict with the April 15th tax deadline and the Good Friday holiday, I look forward to seeing everyone at the May 10th meeting in Rancho Cordova.

Thank you to everyone for your continued support of the FPA NorCal Conference! Since we are always striving to provide maximum value to our sponsors and members,we have decided to allocate the rebate check from the FPA NorCal Conference to sourcing high quality speakers. We keep this focus on high caliber speakers and content because they boost attendance at our monthly meetings and attendance drives engagement within our chapter and community. We look forward to seeing you at one of our upcoming meetings:

- May 10, 2019 - Kelli Cruz, Founder, Cruz Consulting Group, How to Recruit and
  Compensate Top Talent
- June 14, 2019 - Johnny Sommese, Regional Director of Business Development, LPL
Financial, presenting on Business Succession Planning

Career Development - Daryl Wong, EA, CFP ®
We recently met with CSUS faculty members and the Dean of the College of Business Administration to discuss the program's curriculum (Finance and Financial Planning Track) and networking opportunities for graduating seniors. Our goal is to create an accessible network for internships, guidance, and potential career opportunities.

Thank you to those who responded to our sign up request to be a mentor. The details of the mentorship program are still in the works but we will be in contact with everyone hopefully soon.

Advocacy - Claudia C. Kane, CFP®, CIMA®, CPWA®, ADPA®, CDFA®

The most recent FPA CA Advocacy Day was held at our beautiful California State Capitol on Tuesday, March 5 th, and was a fun and engaging day. Thank you to all who participated, especially to the seven members of our local chapter who each gave up a day to participate and meet with their legislators. We had over 30 FPA members from all around California, including CFP® professionals, mortgage and tax advisors.

Advocacy is a very important part of our Financial Planning Association. The bills that are often brought forth by our legislators can affect each of us and our businesses. Whether you're an employee of a large firm or a solo practitioner, issues such as taxation of financial services, possible tax deductibility of 529 plans (currently being considered) and fiduciary definitions and regulations can have a big impact on us and on our clients.

This was my second opportunity to participate, and, as before, I found it very enlightening. Our legislators really do want to hear from us. They appreciate having us as a resource to talk with regarding possible or pending legislation. While in his office, several of us were able to have a glance at the whiteboard of bills currently being worked on by Assemblyman Kevin Kiley. It is hard to imagine that our representatives are able to fully review and comprehend some of these bills, and the "unintended consequences" they can have for their constituents.

If you have a relationship with your legislator, please reach out to them. Set an appointment for a quick conversation. If you have ideas for bills you'd like considered, per Legislative Director, Matthew Easley, send your representative a letter at the end of the year outlining your ideas and requesting an appointment. If you'd like to chat or need help, please don't hesitate to give me a call at (916) 773-6700!

As we ring in the second quarter of 2019, I just want to thank everybody for their hard efforts in membership. This is the life blood of the FPA organization. We have a target of 5 new members per month this year and will need EVERYONE's help and support.

I am pleased to announce that we have 3 volunteers on the membership committee. Please welcome my new Co-Chair, Ray Harrison of Helios and our new warrior princess from MacFarlane Legal, Sheryl Kennedy.

Each month we will be announcing new members, first time members and non-members. We encourage you to invite at least one guest to a meeting this year. Also, we will mention at least one member benefit each month like special discounts and upcoming events.
We will be looking at new avenues of membership by working to encourage wire house firms with CFP's to join like Morgan Stanley, Merrill Lynch, RBC, Raymond James, Charles Schwab, Edward Jones and others. We will also be working hard with our new NEXGEN team and seeking student members and new CFP® candidates.

THANKS AND KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!
